  1. You have found a few - so the GPSr is working. Look "smarter" - think "Where might be a good hiding spot around here?" Tree cover, cloud cover, nearby radio transmitters etc. can affect accuracy. The cache(s) might have gone missing... log your DNF and put a "watch" on the cache to get notified when someone else writes a log entry.
  2. Rule of thumb - hardware purchase depends on what software you will use. Older - cheaper palms tend to have less memory. Some geocache programs need to run in the main memory, not on an sd-card. Cachemate software can run on a palm (v3 or higher) in main memory. I use a Palm M-125 which has only 8mb of main memory. Cachemate takes 2mb and the data takes about 4mb - which doesn't leave much room for anything else.
  3. Remember what mom (and emily Post) always used to say. -Say please and thank you -Cover your mouth when you cough -don't put your elbows on the dinner table -never have auto loading music on your web page -write a thank you note for every gift you receive -be a good listener
  4. Lithium - About 50 searches on the 1st set of batteries and still going strong. Rechargeables may be more economical (and green) in the long-run... But now I use lithium batteries exclusively in my Garmin legend, palm pilot, and Kodak digital camera. I started out using rechargeables in the camera, took about 1500 pictures the first year I had it, but it seemed like I was always needing to swap out a freshly charged set at the most inopportune time.
  5. Why do we do it... for "kicks". There is a natural high - Possibly even addictive for some - that you get at the moment of the find.
  6. Agreed - the Items at the Groundspeak store are limited.... SO... Shop elsewhere - try www.cafepress.com and enter "geocaching" as a search term. The list is over 7,740 items long! -Happy shopping
  7. When I log a DNF for a cache, I usually put a watch on it - so I get an email when another person writes a log. That way I'll know it someone else found it and I should try again... or if it might be missing... etc,
  8. Sand Man - Your Garmin 12 is an older unit that does NOT use the WAAS system for increased accuracy. The Garmin GPS 12 uses a position averaging feature which diminishes the effects of Selective Availability (SA) upon position error and displays a value that reflects the estimated accuracy of the averaged position. Simply put - Your older GPS may not be capable of the same kind of accuracy as a newer GPS. Perhaps there are some settings that might improve things a bit. Try here for a manual for your Garmin http://www.garmin.com/products/manual.jsp?...ct=010-00146-00
  9. I pick up a new Legend (online) delivered for $125 and its great - however I am in a metro area with over 3000 caches within an hour drive. I wish my GPSr could hold more waypoints. A better antenna would also help. I was out last weekend in a local park and the the GPSr (while hanging around my neck) lost the satellight signal under "not so dense" tree cover. I had to stop walking and hold the unit away from my body for several minutes to regain signal.
  10. Ahhh - I never thought about it quite like that... almost too simple. The decimal portion (.450) divided by 16.67 = seconds 450/16.67=26.99 or about 27 seconds. I Googled "enter coordinates" and found this really nice converter http://boulter.com/gps/ -Cheers
  11. Some numbers - just FYI - shows trend by day - based on my pocket queries I analyzed the "last logged" date shown in gsak for 1546 unique caches logged in the past 4 weeks for my location around Milwaukee Wi - this info shows the trend - not total number of log entries - but you can get a general idea... Last logged date for past 28 days Mon = 128 - 8% Tue = 131 - 8% Wed = 195 - 13% Thu = 169 - 11% Fri = 95 - 6% Sat = 263 - 17% Sun = 565 - 37% ----------- 1546 caches located around Milw WI So as we already know - trying to make log entries on Sat/Sun might be an experiment in futility. -Cheers
  12. I've encountered the same thing... There are just over 200 caches within 10 miles of my home - so I had to combine about 12 'tabs' within Easy GPS. As a regular member, you can check up to 20 caches for downloading into one .loc file. Each .loc file opens on a separate tab within Easy GPS. You must drag and drop (or copy) them all to one tab if you want to load them to your GPSr in one shot. As far as I know that's the only way... and another good reason to pop for a Premium membership - but... I'm really new around here - so I could be totally wrong.
  13. I just received my eTrex Legend 2 days ago. I found a price of $120 +$5 shipping at www.pricegrabber.com It was real easy to get started using it. It has basic mapping, comes with a data cable. So easy - that I was able to download about 20 caches without even looking at the user manual. - I like that it takes regular alkaline batteries - comes with data cable - works in my car - gives speed, direction and draws a line on the map as I'm driving - easy "one hand" operation - cool lookin' translucent blue case The Legend C with the color screen would be easier to see. The Garmin "60" series has a better antenna - better reception - which can mean improved accuracy. -Cheers
