I never removed my SD card from the reader and everything went fine. **DEFINITELY BACK UP YOUR INTERNAL MEMORY** just in case! Like I said in my previous post, I had to reload my basemap as it was about 15-30KMs off. I like the fact that you can chose which screens to keep active! And I for the first time has actually seen that I have a WAAS connection.
How do I back up internal memory, Im a little rusty at this. Since me and my wife had our daughter my gps has been put on a shelf except for the odd cache hunt.

Does anyone know if when you up-grade the FW you have to erase everything on the sd card to make it work, or can I just remove it before hand and do the re-set/download? I havent been on here in a while, and the last firmware upgrade for the 500 I tried to do for the last version wouldnt work. I was wondering if it was because I didnt erase the sd card?

Is there a way to use mapsend without putting in the disc every time, I have version 1.00 topo for Canada. I thought I seen a thread about this but mabe I was wrong?

I just wish Magellan could help me download the 2.03 firmware for my 500 Ive had it since last feb. or march and havent gotten any help that has worked yet. I just bought my father in-law a 500 and it has the newer firmware and I think it seemed better. Magellans tec support is the worst thing Ive ever dealt with.

Which is better the Garmin Venture CX or Magellan 500 Le?
I just bought the Magellan 500 Le package from Costco (comes with mapsend 3D). I thought this unit could do auto routing with this software but it can't. I also thought the battery life was 18 hours but apparently with the 3 AAA batteries it's only 11 (even less if you use the back light). I am trying to decide if I should return it and get a Garmin Venture CX with mapsoure. It has more than double the battery life and from what I have read it has better auto routing features. Any advice would be very much appreciated. Thanks.
or you could get the lit-ion batterie seperate and uce batterie clip with le for back-up, just a thought.

OK... if the batteries fit inside the unit, that's not too bad.
I'm leaning towards the Garmin 60csx. Now that I've done more research that seems to have all the features I'm looking for. I'd be interested to hear what Magellan people have to say as negatives with the 60csx, though!

I'm leaning towards the eXplorist 600 but having trouble finding some of the accessories.
1) A carrying case with a clear plastic panel so you can use the GPSr without removing it from the case.
2) The optional AAA battery clip. I think this exists, but can't find a pic of it anywhere.
And of course, any deals that you could point me to would be greatly appreciated.

I'm replacing my Magellan SporTrak so this thread has been great to get me up to speed on the latest Magellan / Garmin units.
I've always been a Magellan fan. Here's are some considerations for the eXplorist:
1. The screen is slightly smaller than the SporTrak (more of an adjustment thing for me, but I don't know how much smaller I could take... the SporTrak wasn't that big to start with).
2. All the eXplorists use a rechargable Li-ion battery. This is a HUGE negative for me. Besides the cost of a spare battery, they enivitably get weaker and weaker. Especially if you tend not to use them frequently (which I don't). When I'm out caching, I just want to swap in some normal AA or AAA batteries.
3. Before you correct me on point #2
, the 500 LE (and optionally for the other eXporists) are the exception to this. It uses AAA battery adapter. However I believe this is a separate extermal adapter that you need to connect back into the eXplorist (I can't find a picture of the AAA battery adapter anywhere... including the Magellan site so I don't know if it needs a cable or just clips on the unit). Either way, it's one more bulky piece of equipment you need to deal with.4. The 500 does NOT have an electronic compass. I didn't have this on the SporTrak, but I always wish I did. The electronic compass determines your heading even if you are standing still. If you don't have it, you have to walk back and forth to determine the direction you're heading. (Granted at times this can be entertaining or good excerise for the kids.) Still the e-compass in the eXplorist 600 sounds great.
5. But wait... Magellan has read my mind and has the eXplorist XL to meet all my needs. OR so it seemed for a few seconds. It has a much larger screen (and price). It uses normal batteries! Ah... but now we've lost the e-compass. Grrrr.
So my dream GPS (not considering price) would have these features for geocaching:
+ Uses normal batteries (XL)
+ Decent size screen (XL)
+ Topo map capability (400, 500, 500LE, 600, XL)
+ Has a built in e-compass (600)
For me, it does not seem that Magellan has anything that has all these features in one unit. I need to hang my head low and go research some Garmin unit now...
If you can live with the external battery back and no e-compass, the costco deal is a steal, especially since it includes the topo software.
The batterie clip for the magellan explorist model is the same size as the li-ion rechargeable batterie and the three aaa's fit right inside its not bulky at all. But magellan also has the rechargeable li-ions on sale right now with the power cord so I think they are trying to get rid of em, seeing how they discontinued the regular 500 with this type of batterie.The 500le is still on their web site.I would go with the eX600 or if you are into garmin and want to shell out a few extra bucks get the 60 csx.

The 500LE is still listed, but the LiIon battery-equipped 500 is not. Same model with the exception of the battery pack. The apparent discontinuation of the 500 is news to me.get the 500 while they last cause they are discontinued on magellans website, this is why you can find em so cheap now.
The LE is still listed on the Magellan site as of 10 minutes ago, and I couldn't find any information about it being discontinued. But I could have missed it.
Go to magellans legacy models on the web site, It shows the 500 being discontinued as of November 2006.Its in the support section of their site.

If you go to the legacy models it shows the 500 is discontinued and they have the charger/batterie combo for 19 bucks but just the batterie is 39.99, figure that out?

That's helpful information: I think you are looking at the .rgn files (that define the region you specified...they should be about 3KB in size) in the Docs folder. The .imi files should be in the export folder, and should be much larger.
You may need to go to Tools/Folder Options/View tab in Windows Explorer to uncheck the "Hide extensions for known file types" in order to see the file extension.

Does the map file appear to take some time to compile (are you seeing progress bars and that stuff)?
Are you looking in the right place? If you are saving to the hard drive, the file should be in the \Export\Images folder. The files should end in .imi
You may have seen it, but rws offered a link to a nice wmv video walking one through the process. You probably are remembering the basic process ok, but it might jog your memory for something critical.

You're not offering a whole lot of information, like the model GPS you have. That stuff is important.
Also, where are you having trouble? With Conversion Manager? Is that what doesn't work? Or the map doesn't work after loading it onto the GPS? More detail is better when trying to obtain help.
Just tossing a dart into the empty void, I'd guess you're not entering the serial number correctly. Don't use the serial number on the back of the GPS. Use the one that shows up when you look at the software information for your GPS.

Its a eXplorist500 and Im sure the serial # is entered corectly but its like when I save it to the computer and go to run it through the conversion manager the saved file is there with nothing in it.

I just got a mapsend direct route , downloaded it and selected a reigon then saved it to comp. and went to conversion manager to load onto gps and it dosent work. 8 months ago I dwnloaded the topo map with no problems,does anyone have any sugestions?

Because there is no reason to turn off WAAS on a Magellan unit.
I dont want to turn off waas off but I thought that there might be something on the "secret menu" that could help me be able to download the newer firmware onto my 500. I havent been sucessful in getting any help from magellan either.

What is the "secret" Magellan menu to turn off WAAS and is that something I want to do? I live in North Alabama. The DVD discussed here http://www.nohvcc.org/IMAGES/prgps.asp says to to turn off WAAS. Lo and behold, a review of my Magellan Sportrak Pro shows no menu setup to turn off the WAAS feature.

AR-15, I'm not sure how a Sportrak works, but on the explorist if you press the "menu" button then move the joystick left and right about 4 times it opens the "secret menu" enter "03" to open the WAAS screen. The only thing you can do on the explorist using this is to turn WAAS on or off. Here's where you go for more info:

You should have been looking last week london drugs had the 500 for 199.99$ Ive had mine for just about a year and love it. The 60csx might be great but so is the ex 500 for a couple hundred cheaper.

Im trying to upload the 2.03 firmware to my ex500 and everything goes good till it gets to the part where its suspose to auto shut down and it dosent, does anyone have any ideas what my problem is?
