  1. The benchmark in question: http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/ds_mark.prl?PidBox=TU3104 The benchmark toppled in February: http://www.mauinews.com/page/content.detail/id/570219/Lahaina-flagpole-has--always-been-there--but-crashes-down.html On advice of folks here, I took pictures of the existing cement base and surrounding area. I sent an e-mail with the pics and a kink to the news article to NGS like it was instructed during the recovery report process. That was in March. It's now May. Usually, recovery reports get thrown out in a month. Why has this direct submission been delayed?
  2. Minor question, but why does your link point to a spot that according to the Topo maps is the location of a BM (BM 188(3? 8?) near the intersect of Holopuni & Pulehu??
  3. Am I right in reasoning these two markers are in holes drilled into busy roadways? The datasheet cords appear to be off vs. the descriptions. TU0915 I think is in the middle of a highway here vs. in a field (I think the cords are pointing to a rockpile in the middle of the field here). TU0857 appears to be in the middle of an intersection instead of somewhere here.
  4. Imgur.com. Simple free uploading.
  5. Yesterday I received the following response from Deb: So I would humbly suggest that we respect Deb's wishes and refrain from submitting info of any sort to NGS concerning intersection stations. Tim So basically, even if they do replace it, the topple incident pretty much is grounds to report it as destroyed once I get photographs of the area and submit them for review? Also, what about the USGS BM disc at the place others have seen? Could that be considered a replacement benchmark for the other BM?
  6. I have to ask, why? edited to add: Wait, there is a USGS BM at the pole as well according to some reports here on Geocaching: http://www.geocaching.com/mark/details.aspx?PID=TU3104
  7. I mean, if I go to the marker next week, and the thing hasn't been replaced, how do I report it as? Mark Destroyed, Mark Mot Found, Poor?
  8. Flagpole topples in high winds: http://www.mauinews.com/page/content.detail/id/570219/Lahaina-flagpole-has--always-been-there--but-crashes-down.html NGS datasheet: http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/ds_mark.prl?PidBox=TU3104 So they intend on replacing it. I'm planning to go there next week to check out the condition of the remaining site. How would I report this to the NGS?
  9. Thanks, will find it next time I'm near the airport Donn Make sure to keep copies of the NGS reports with you at all times. It helped me in one spot with Airport Police in one case when I looked for a marker outside of airport property but was still in their patrol zone.
  10. The datasheet notes that you need an escort to the site (which is to be assumed the marker is within the fenced in tarmac area in the background). I guess someone at the HIDOT just copy pasted thru many of the marks in the area (examples are nearby DN6363 & DN6362). HNL is "rich" in benchmarks. Unfortunately, many of them are in restricted areas, including nearby Hickam Air Force Base & Pearl Harbor. I can help you with an easy one near that mark: DN6360 AOLE
  11. Please don't tell me I return to be accused of maleficence? I will not tolerate being made of as an example for the follies of others.
  12. Rolling onto midnight here, so this might sound incoherent. I need to figure out which SD card has the additional photos that I took, but here is the site in question on Google Street View: http://goo.gl/maps/jaGi2 Honestly, the Geocache l/l info (N 20° 50.133 W 156° 24.100 (NAD 83) Altitude: 460.16) puts the location around here. The raw datasheet values puts the location to the right of the Geocache location in that ditch paralleling the road. But the ditch is dirt lined, not cemented. I did not find any evidence that it was cement lined significantly in both south and northerly directions. And if you look abit, the next nearest ditches cut by the road described is this one north of the Pulehu Dump (which is the Haiku Ditch) and this one more south of the truck crossing road and the location I found (not a named ditch, appears to be a "tributary" ditch to funnel excess water from Kauhikoa Ditch near the Pulehu/Omaopio intersect to Lowrie Ditch). The truck crossing does cut a ditch but doesn't match several descriptions on the notes. I did make sure that I read the datasheet notes as best I could, and the location I found does match the descriptions quite similarly. There is a crossroad (of sorts, but farther than the ditches in the area unless you accept the dirt roads that has the gates), it's on the ditch named (after double checking topo maps and tracing the route), it's on an abutment, at right angles, on the road described and within the mileage indicated and compass directions. I think the geo info might be off. Whats really bugging me is this: Is NGS really trolling Geocache for info now? Cause if they are, I'd need to double check a variety of marks in the database that other people have marked as destroyed in my area.
  13. I've been trying to access this particular datasheet to see if NGS has updated it with my recovery, but it seems to just stop and give out garbled lines. Is anyone able to get the thing to load fully? http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/ds_mark.prl?PidBox=TU0203 The marker that I reported: http://www.Waymarking.com/waymarks/WMFRY5_US_Geological_Survey_460_Puunene_Maui_Hawaii_DESTROYED
  14. Trying to find more of this series of BM's that I don't require asking favors for access to (most are on private property, a few on the land of a "well known celebrity personality"). After redoing the coordinates and using the descriptions, i'm stumped. Is it at street level in the weeds and dirt (public property), or up on the cliff face (private property)? The datasheet. The area in question. Also while i'm at it, this is also giving me a headache. I wanna say it's in that pipe looking thingy behind the rock wall, but I have a suspicion that the wall might've destroyed it. The datasheet. The area in question.
  15. Okay, that begs this odd question: Were benchmarks subjected to the scrap metal drives of WWII?
  16. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1952-Corps-of-Engineers-US-Army-Albuquerque-Survey-Boundary-Marker-Brass-N-/170957540700?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27cddd0d5c Was looking for something else unrelated when this came up on an eBay search sidebar. Is this a legit marker? I thought you couldn't sell these? Edited to add: This also popped up when I went back to the auction above and went down. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Corps-of-Engineers-Bronze-Survey-Marker-Type-1-3-5-Diameter-/321046466284?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4abfdc4eec
  17. There are several marks along a highway that has "easy" road access, and looking at one, I noticed something. http://www.ngs.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/ds_mark.prl?PidBox=TU3090 http://www.geocaching.com/mark/details.aspx?PID=TU3090 Now originally, I reported that the route to the marker was being paved and access was closed. Now I find out it's open back again and upon re-review of the info, RM1 is in the middle of a "graveyard" on the site. My question is, how far are RM's spaced out? Is it "uniform" or does it vary from site to site? (For example PID ABXXXX has RM's spaced 35 feet apart, while ABYYYY has RM's spaced 45 feet apart) Also, for Waymarking & Geocaching recording, if I can't find RM1, do I list the PID as a partial recovery/poor recovery (I found all but one of the listed RM's), or so long as the main BM is intact, just forget about it?
  18. Great, now it'll be easier for folks to make even more bad recoveries of benchmarks when it reality, they're actually destroyed.
  19. Yeah, I saw the How the States Got Their Shapes episode.......33/66 feet chains stretched across miles of terrain? I guess i'm just frustrated given some readily accessible marks.....are missing. Two alone have gone due to housing subdivisions, one had the disk removed and left a nice big hole in the ditch abutment, and i'm just miffed at the vast amount of bridge work one series of markers has suffered.
  20. Why are some of these benchmarks in ridiculously inaccessible a/or out of the way places? At least in my area (Maui), many of them require a few days hike or access via helicopter to get to them!! Even after taking into account possible land routes, abandoned public rights of way, trails, jeep roads, settlements, etc, i'm still baffled that some markings are in the position they are in.
  21. ...so he destroyed the mark after 150 years just so he can brag about it? A surveyor never removes any mark until he has documented its position. They replace them with more permanant corner. Plus didn't they find it in a stream?
  22. Are you reporting these to the NGS? If so, just curious, but why are you using the 'Individual Contributor' instead of 'Geocaching'? --Me. Most of the BM's i've found aren't in the Geocaching outdated database (using primarily the Scaredy Cat Film BM Viewer to find the ones not listed by Geocaching). So, I don't think i'd be justified in reporting that I found the mark via Geocaching. And to be honest, i've gone to that as default with BM's that i've found via Geocaching via force of habit.
  23. Wait, reset disks are considered to be "not recovered?" So, this BM's datasheet is wrong as well?
  24. I noticed that several marks that I found haven't been updated in the NGS database, and it's either at 30 days, or over 30 days. What gives? For example: I found this, and the datasheet hasn't been updated. Found, and http://not updated. The longest is this one: Found in poor condition several months ago, still no notation of it. The odd this is, a marker that I found yet not reported to Waymarking had it's BM updated within a few days of me reporting it!!
