  1. Hi folks, I lost my legend so I need to get a new unit . I've always been disappointed with the legend's reception - time to lock on, poor performance under tree cover (aren't we always under tree cover?) and the inability to hold a lock when on a lanyard around my neck (have to hold it level, or even better, put in on a rock and step away.) However, I do like the intuitive controls. So, I'm thinking about the Vista C or 60c. Will they solve my [GPS-replacement] problems? Do they lock on quickly, hold lock in vertical mode, and are they as easy to use? Is the 60c worth the extra money? Thanks, Steve (techtalkers)
  2. Well, I have a cache that's placed under some very heavy canopy. I took the readings in a nearby meadow, so the description says to walk about 50 feet at a heading of 300 degrees (or something like that). The hint sends the finder to a landmark near the cache, but that's almost a spoiler. Steve
  3. Hi Folks, I lost my eTrex someplace and so I needed a new GPS. Based on threads here, I bought a Lowrance PhD. After going through the manual, it seems like a nice unit; it certainly acquires sats fast, and even operates on the porch (screened in, with skylights) whereas the eTrex didn't. However, I'm having trouble finding an easy way to enter the coordinates of a cache I want to hunt. I found the man-overboard way to mark a spot (current location) and was then able to rename it and edit the long/lat but there has to be an easier way. I want to be able to sit here in front of the PC, find a cache to look for, and then enter its coords (and maybe it's parking lot) and then go out and find it. Can anyone Lowrance user give me a simple keystroke list that will get the job done? I'm willing to assume that it is about the same as the other GPSrs in their family (e.g., H2O). By the way, this unit has an SD card, and I have an SD reader, so if there's a way to just grab them from the site, that would be a nice alternatve, too. Many thanks, Steve (Techtalkers)
  4. Hi Folks, I have a Legend which I bought to replace an older unit that I gave to my neice. (Sorry, I don't remember the brand/model). On my older unit, I was able to carry it on a wrist strap (unit was vertical) and keep a signal. The Legend loses it in that position, but picks it up again when held horizontal. I'm assuming that the internal antenna in GPSr's has a horizontal OR vertical preference. Can anyone confirm that, and recommend a $200 replacement that I can hang around my neck and keep signal? Thanks, Steve
  5. I like the idea of having a signature item. That is, something unusual and useful that you always leave when you visit a cache. One of the cachers in this area (NE PA) leaves small bottles of water. I leave insect repellant towlettes. Come up with something useful and easily within your budget and you'll always be trading up.
  6. I was going to place a cache in the US Forest Service's Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, but shied away because of the National Park prohibition. This morning, I noticed another cache elsewhere in the Area. Can someone clarify the rules, please, Thanks, Techtalker (Steve)
