  1. You've got my $30 so I don't need to kiss your butt like the rest of my fellow geocachers!! hahaha just kiddin' REALLY!!!! Good work and thank you so very much from the bottom of my heart.
  2. There are a lot of avenues that the media could try to take to make GC look bad. But, ultimately the picture that they would portray would make the owner of the cache look bad, not the entire GC community. It is an sport/game played by individuals, not special interest groups. I would hope that GC could maintain an image of outdoorsman with respect for the surroundings.
  3. OK, OK, OK. Right - to the point. Is this a good cache idea - I think so. It would be a lot of fun to do thats for sure. It adds another aspect of the thrill of the hunt Looking for the fossils along with the cache site. Your also right in saying that this is your cache site and that in your judment if it is appropriate then so be it. There. By the way I think its cool that your wife is a geologists. Geologists are awesome. haha

  5. As a geologist/paleontologist (an expert in this matter) I would recommend a serious double think on this one. Pillaging fossil sites is illegal in most parts of North America. A site doesn't even have to be known. If you are found removing a fossil from an area it is an immediate fine. They are protected. Not only that but it will make a mess of the area. People will get carried away digging them up - the thrill of the hunt. I have a fossil cache myself called Rugose Coral cache. In this case the fossils are found on the ground eroded out of the rocks. I do not promote smashing them out of the rocks. Find one on the ground only. And do not remove it from the area - a big no no. My advise don't be digging for fossils. You don't want to be the one that promotes excavating for them - trust me. By the way, what do these fossils look like???
  6. "The only rule we need here is the basic common sense rule" by seneca. I hope everyone maintains a level of common sense when placing caches, concidering the current growth rate of the sport(can I call it that?) Still curious!
  7. Not a problem majicman. I'm actually only interested on everyones viewpoint, that being good or bad. Depending on how you look at it. I am by no means a treehugger myself. Here is a quote from one of my posts earlier this week. " I'm no treehugger. I'm a Geologist. I get paid to pillage the planet". Being sarcastic of course. Still curious!!!
  8. Gee I didn't know you guys were so particular about typos. It really makes it a fun place to post when a person gets responses like that. I think it will still be interesting to see what some geocachers think. My poll imposes nothing on anyone. Just let everyone know what you think. Thats what they are for. But, thanks for your intelligent responses anyway.

  10. This should be interesting. Should we concider the environment? How should we manage and protect our caches to minimize disturbance? Many geocachers have expressed concern over the ecology when cache hunting. Its true that we do effect the environment to a certain degree when multiple visits have been made to a cache site. How do you feel?
  11. Attila I just want to make a few comments about your post. Some people are hypocryts thats a given. Believe one thing but carry through with certain actions. Thats natural. And, you are right we cannot just place caches on beaches - that would limit things wouldn't it. A point I'd like to bring up. If the effects on ecology is becoming an issue, as geocachers it should be our responsability to implimant a policy of cache removal after a certain period of time. Say after one year(or longer??) a notice should go out on the cache page that the cache be removed. This would allow the geocache area to grow back to its original state. This would be a very good ecologically responsable approach to geocaching.
  12. headmj I like your viewpoint. Thats exactly the way I look at it too. We are simply part of a complex life supporting sytem here on earth. And humans are a curious lot. Our level of curiosity is a big part of what separates us from the rest of the animal kingdom. It drives our level of learning.
  13. Wow that sounds like a lot of fun actually. You could put tons of stuff on there. Afew favorite songs, some pictures, all of the geocachers cache sites. It'd be wide open. Collectable disks, and cheap. I think I might make one. Lets get this started!!! Thanks Phrosty )

  15. Go ahead. You are not imposing risk on anyone else. They know the situation beofre going into it. If your willing to risk putting it there then go ahead.
  16. Thank you White Rabbit. SOme of us are taking this quite seriously. Sarcasm takes away from the point that some of us are trying to make, leading the thread down the wrong path. When I stated "technical" in my previous posts, I clearly wasn't refering to the equiptment that you would require to digging up the cache. You should be able to use your hands. "Technical" equiptment I'm refering to involves a compass, a tape measure, and maybe pacing off distances thats all. Simple - not aasking much. I'd be very surprised if most geocachers didn't have a compass. If you don't want to use this stuff, just your GPS, then don't hunt for a buried cache. Its up to you. Your choice.

  18. Not a very realistic scenario is it. I'm thinking about taking a cache and dumping it in the ocean and then marking the waypoints. Do you think someone will visit it. Maybe in the future. But, its up to me isn't it. Within reason is what I'm getting at.

  20. George I was being subjective and contovercial suggesting that a 5inch container was too large. It depends on the cache site and the amount of disturbance you want to create. In some cases you might want to only bury a 35mm film case. In your cache situation I'd say it would be safe to bury a larger container, not worried too much about the disturbance. We have to use discression thats all. Enjoy!!!!!

  22. I don't think its a good idea to use any of that stuff. When I was a teenager gone fishing I put deet on all over. Still having some on my hands I grabbed my fishing rod which had a black foam grip on it. Well, there was a chemical reaction between the deet, the foam and some other plastic on the handle of the fishing rod. My had temporarily stuck to it and I got tothinking that that goop aint good for anyone. Lone behold its been concidered a carcenogen over the last 8 years or so. Don't use deet. Use some other bio friendly stuff, or just bare it like I do.
  23. The Canon S100 S110 Digital Elf series of cameras are great. Small and reliable. And most important they look great hahaha

  25. I use a program called Oziexplorer. Great for uploading, downloading waypoints, routes and tracks to a digital topo map. You can plan out routes and download them. Very easy to use once you get all your GPS settings right.
