  1. I just purchased a Maxpedition Fayboy bag. Way too cool....lots of pockets for organizing stuff. I've started using it as my "everyday" bag...being a nurse I carry a bunch of stuff with me and like a bag that allows me to organized everthing well. Mazpedition makes an entire line of bags from fanny-packs to larger backpacks with something for everyone. Some of the bags, mine included, are designed for concealed carry of a handgun. On longer caching trips that include hiking, I have a pack from Northface that has a hydration pouch and just enough room/pockets for those longer trips where you might need a jacket or more food. Right now, since I'm stuck in West Texas (Air Force) where most of the caching does not involve much hiking so my "urban" bag works great. I guess you have to set up your rig based on where/how you cache.
  2. Daytime gig: Stay-at-home Dad.....Supporting military spouse & raising 2 great kids. Evening/Weekend gig: RN.....stamping out DZ and madness.
  3. Okay, I'll bite....how would one go about finding caches that have not yet been published? STP
  4. I went to look at the Maxpedition stuff today after hearing all the glowing reports in this thread...good stuff!! Ordered this fat boy a new Fatboy. STP
  5. The only thing worse than cheap junk swag is WET cheap junk sway....but I'm sure that horse has been beat to death. STP
  6. Dude, Gore-Tex was designed for the rain.....which you guys have plenty of!! STP you are correct sir, but op was about layering...although... i do layer my beach towel over my trunks to change to dry shorts when leaving the beach... touche.
  7. Dude, Gore-Tex was designed for the rain.....which you guys have plenty of!! STP
  8. I guess all those 'homies running around the 'hood in North Face down vest don't care about quality. That said, my Mountain Light gore-tex jacket I puchased 12 years ago is still going strong....as is all the gear I own by TNF. Maybe one day it will blow out a zipper and they'll send me a new one!!
  9. Oh how I miss those days when I lived in the Bay Area and could go to the North Face outlet in Berkley!! Gearhead Heaven!!
  10. I've found www.sierratradingpost.com to have outstanding deals on quality gear. Give them a look-see..... Nate
  11. Even though I'm currently serving time in West Texas......my Jeep sports Michigan plates. My wife is in the Air Force so she gets to keep the plates from her home state..which is MI. Where did your group have the tire covers made? Maybe it's something GC.com couls offer if there was enough interest. I'm surprized Jeep doesn't offer something related to geocaching!
  12. We attended our first "event" a couple weeks ago and had a blast. I came away from the gathering with a couple questions: At the event, there were about a dozen Jeep TB''s on a table along with a Rubbermaid container full of assorted TBs. What's the deal with all the TB's....are folks supposed to take them and move them on to new locations or are they just there for people to "log" and pad their numbers of bugs found? One of the guys at the event had a TB on the front of his cache-mobile...what's the deal with that? Help with the TB ground-rules will hopefully clear the air on this issue for me..... Thanks in advance, Nate
  13. Since quite a few of us drive Jeeps and other SUVs that have tailgate-mounted spares....I was wondering if anyone has found/made/designed a geocaching-themed tire cover for their rig? Any leads would be appreciated. Nate
  14. First....I hope that was Tammy posting (better visual for me...sorry Bill!) and second, are you really nude if your wearing a GPSr? STP
  15. Since my last comment was "edited", I'll try to be more PC......it seems the author of this thread has gotten us all spun up and left us hanging.... Go figure......
  16. Just the other day, I had to use a 2-iron (golf club) to remove a cache from a large patch of cactus. In reality, this cache should have been listed as a "5" for difficulty because noone can use a 2-iron well. I took my chances and pulled off the "shot" but it was touch-and-go there for a minute. If I had sliced/hooked that retrieval, who knows what might have happened!!
  17. I just moved to West Texas and I'm searching for a new wireless provider as Verizon does not service this area. I've decided to go with Cingulair since everyone in my office is using them and their coverage is really good in the area....an important issue since I'm a nurse that travels around seeing patients all over Gods creation. Anyway, my question.....should I get a phone that is GPS compatible in hopes that Cingulair will offer the GeoNav service in the future. And if so, how do I know which phone to pick.....if a Motorola Razor from Sprint is GPS ready, does it work the same for Cingulair? Thank folks.....
  18. We plan on attending our first event next weekend and we're wondered what goes down at these get-togethers? Do the organizers typically set-up caches just for the event? Is it sort of like an "geocaching/orienteering" meet? Regardless, we are fired-up to be part of the fun and meet some of the other local cachers since we just moved to West Texas and are still assimilating (sp?). Anyone got feedback on what we should expect or things we should bring to make the event more fun? Thanks in advance.... Sherman T. Potter
  19. "Just a few more meters" This one goes back to my backpacking days when I had a buddy that used to say the same thing when asked "How much farther?"
  20. Dude......you have over 8000 posts!!! Everything's an old thread to you!!
  21. FNG....(friggin' new geocacher) May you find much peace and purpose in your search for meaningless geo-swag*. Welcome, STP *not to offend those placing ultra-cool swag in caches.
  22. Prevention is the key.... If weather permits...cover the skin that is possibly exposed to the plant. As a few have said, washing after possible exposure will decrease the possibility of developing a reactive rash....but you really only have 1 hour after exposure (contact) to wash your skin. Learn to identify the plant and avoid at all cost...remember, other vectors can expose unknowingly...I got the worst case of poison oak from a friend's dog.....dog gets in the plant....you pet the dog....then you rub eyes or take a leak.....if the resin from the plant is on something/someone...it can get on you. After exposure cares include oral antihistamines and in severe cases oral steroids to combat the rash.
  23. Oh how I miss those Thursday night cache-fests......just me and Cracker in the Hat...oh and Jim in Potomac....being detained by the Police for "night-caching" with the 15 year-old daughter of the dean. (What movie?) Flashlight on high-beam.....we're going in!!!! STP
  24. I want to ditch the hand-scribbled notes on a scrap piece of paper and be able to manage a few caches if I'm traveling. I've seen mention of Palm IIIs being available cheap on Ebay....is that suitable for my needs? Are there other PDA's I should consider...and if so, which ones? Obviously I will need software to manage the waypoints, what is the software of chice for PDA's? Thanks and please forgive me as I'm a low-tech dude just hoping to make caching a little simpler!! Thanks and cache on..... STP
