  1. Returned from a full fun day of geocaching, with a new note for backpack contents: When hunting with an 8 yr old Leprechaun girl, more than a mile from the road on a muddy trail and in a park with no facilites, it is useful to have a little plastic ziploc bag with some toilet paper in it!!!!!! x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x- "Next time, instead of getting married, I think I'll just find a woman I don't like and buy her a house."
  2. We're packing right now for Saturday cache hunting and my daughter just reminded me to put trash bags in our backpack. We're going to 2 public parks so we're expecting some litter along the way. x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x- "Next time, instead of getting married, I think I'll just find a woman I don't like and buy her a house."

Note the environmental impact assessment in the cache description and his attention to maintenance. If only everyone were that conscientious.... x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x- "Next time, instead of getting married, I think I'll just find a woman I don't like and buy her a house."
  4. Attila, thanks for the brain teaser! After I posted my guess, I looked at a map and immediately saw my mistake. I think that I shall not travel to Alaska. I worry that I won't know if I'm coming or going. Next time, instead of getting married, I think I'll just find a woman I don't like and buy her a house.
  5. My guess, without cheating: North: Alaska South: Hawaii West: Alaska East: Maine I doubt if I have more than 2 right! Next time, instead of getting married, I think I'll just find a woman I don't like and buy her a house.
  6. For way too much information on antiquated nautical units of measure, see: Nautical Units and Angles Fathoms as a depth measurement "have been in use since before 1600, and may be derived from "faethm", the Anglo Saxon word for "to embrace" (because it is roughly the distance from one hand to the other if your arms are out-stretched)." Next time, instead of getting married, I think I'll just find a woman I don't like and buy her a house.

  8. Hello, since I am also just getting started, and am in the same neighborhood (Pittsburgh) I thought I would wave hello! My daughter & I logged our first cache without a GPSr last weekend. Today the Garmin V arrived by FedEx. So what are the odds that I will be too sick to go to work one day this week?

  10. quote: They are putting a tm after cachecoin so there has to be a paper trail somewhere. You don't have to file a trademark application in order to claim common law trademark rights. You can only use the little "R" in a circle if you have a registered trademark. Anybody can put "TM" after a witty catch phrase. Some forum members should consider trademarking their signature lines! There was also a link to the patent office search engine awhile back in this thread. The right place to search is the trademark database, not the patent database. I just did that, and drew a big fat blank. Neither Geogamers nor cachecoin is a registered trademark. -- Dave the Leprechaun Boring attorney by day, adventurous geocacher in his dreams

  12. quote: Does anyone in this forum do process reengineering for a living? Don't be afraid of change. I DO do process reengineering for a living. Which goes a long way towards explaining why I need to walk in the woods hunting for Happy Meal Toys in order to keep my sanity.
  13. I read about geocaching.com in the "This is True" newsletter (www.thisistrue.com) where the webmaster mentioned that his "Get out of Hell Free" cards were popular items to leave in geocaches. One visit to this site and then it was on to GPS shopping. My Garmin V arrives on Monday. My daughter and I have already logged our first cache even without a GPS unit. You really do just need to follow the clues and think, "where would I hide something?" This will be a great outdoor activity for me and my 8 yr old who loves "treasure hunting".
  14. Thanks for the tips about using a regular ol' compass to zero in on a cache site. I am reading the "getting started" forum to avoid frustration before going out in the field. I am a former "Orienteer" (topo map and compass only) since the 1970's, who has decided to go high-tech. My Silva compass was very upset about this. He is now happy to hear that he will still have a role in my travels.
  15. xeman and Chaplain, thanks so much for your tip on how to get a Garmin V Deluxe the cheaper way. I really should send each of you a check for half of the money I save.

  17. TVNAV.com is advertising the deluxe version at $499 and the regular Garmin V with one unlock code for $360. Unfortunately they are "closed" this week. I just ordered the regular Garmin V from Offroute.com (I don't think I'll travel enough outside of my own region to justify the extra $$$). They are out of stock right now for either version. Price there is $380, no info. on deluxe version. So if you need a Garmin V ASAP, keep looking!

  19. Based on everything I've read in the message boards and elsewhere, I've just purchased a Garmin V. Can't wait for it to arrive so that I can start cache hunting with my daughter! What cinched the deal for me was this unit's versatility for map directions in the car, as well as field use. For those of you who use a Garmin V in the car, do I need to purchase the extra antenna? At $100 it seems pretty steep. Thanks to all who have posted on the Garmin V.
