  1. Hi!

I've found some double logs at the GIFF Mega GCA5DQR from yesterday. And I've seen that already at some other cache I don't remember. Not sure if it's related to the new logging workflow. But me be worth looking into it. So, here's a screenshot:

As I said in my post that you quoted, the functionality hasn't changed.  "Status" logs have always defaulted to the current date (Owner Attention Requested, Reviewer Attention Requested, Owner Maintenance, Enable Listing, Disable Listing, Archive Listing and Retract Listing).

Ok, I never used the "new" log style as I totally disliked it. But at least now it also doesn't get stuck to my last date when it comes to find/atteneded/DNF logs and sorry, that simply isn't cool at all :-(

I don't care much about the status logs, but I just logged some stuff from yesterday and needed to check the date for every single log. Sometimes even twice, as you need to first choose the type, THEN the date...

This isn't a bug, and carries forward existing functionality in the old logging flow.  Defaulting the date to today prevents abuse (backdating a key action like Owner Attention Needed, Owner Maintenance, Reviewer Attention Requested, Disable, Enable and Archive logs).

Sorry, for me it's definitely a bug, not a feature :-( It's a total pain in the *** and just led to the need to edit a few logs as I just mentioned it at about the 3rd log I wrote. Plus, it is changing back to today, when I first change the date and then the log type.

Please bring it back to what it was before. It's so much easier to stay with the last date when it comes to multiple logs on the website.

After painstakingly selecting, installing and configuring a parallel browser of more recent version, just to be able to log my geocaches, I notice the new max limit for number of images per log (20). I am predictably disappointed.

Simply add as many notes as you need. That's an easy to overcome limitation, isn't it?

Release Notes (Geocaching® app: Favorite point indicator) - October 10, 2022

Why don’t we use FP percentage? How did we come up with the algorithm of top 10%?
We compared multiple different algorithms (Favorite points, Favorite point percentage, Wilson score, Fun score) and found that even though there were some differences, they were not significant within our samples (e.g. Favorite points and Wilson score resulted in a very similar set of highlighted caches). Favorite point percentage is more meaningful in some cases, but it also highlights newer caches that have few logs disproportionately.

I'd also second either percentage or Wilson as the pure number doesn't say much. My best example is "Lego" 10k+ FPs, but not a great cache at all. Percentage was comparably low and if the would be an option to downvote, I would been that on this cache for sure :-)

With just FPs that one would get promoted, while by far better might not. You're also arguing that new caches might be be promoted more. And yes, might be true, but also for a reason! Many older caches with high(er) FP counts nowadays either are in bad shape or aren't that special any longer. Think about a bird house, the first one to be found was so cool. But now they are so common, you might never get them a FP any more. That should be seen both at percentage and Wilson numbers that will go down over time, if a cache really is aging.

That would way more reflect the actual status of caches that are worth it, I'd say.

  6. Why? There are SOOOO many people who never attend events. They would be way more interested in the caches. Beside that, it's usually the (sorry!) stupid event owners, who simply aren't able to just place their header coords slightly off, so the event icon easily could be seen ;-)

Besides that: Filter! Or PQ... Do one showing just not yet logged events and there you go. You see all the upcoming events. Easy :-)

Not even if they rise the pay on factor 1,000

You won't see that at any time, because D/T rating can't be objetivly measured, as our measure will differ from peolpe form other regions (keep it in Germay:  as we're living in northern Germany our highest mountain is something like 168m high, we're not used to climb mountain, so our perspective on steep incline will definitly differ from cacheowners in the alpine parts of Bavaria.

    -------------------------

We've already said this in the German part of this forum.

The battle on the correct D/T rating for fishing rod cache is nothing but a proxy battle: Those "brainless athlete" cachers who are in favor of high T ratings get mad about the "chubby programmer" now beeing able to get their T4.5/5 grid filled, and those "chubby programmers" get mad about those "brainless athlete" cachers filling their D4.5/5 grid with those fishing rod caches. (If your seeing some irony in this part, your irony detector is working fine, if not please proceed to the irony detector mechanic near you)

Sorry, both true and wrong :-)

Yes, let's say a T4 in Hamburg might be different from a T4 in the Alps. But a T5 or D5 should always be the same. Either something IS a special tool or it's not. And don't tell me, 10+m fishing rod isn't.

So, the next question would be, is it a D5 or a T5? Both include tools! I'm for having them be a D5, as even a wheelchair person could do them and it usually is pretty easy to get to ground zero.

I also don't understand why you reviewers aren't able/willing to come up with at least a German rule that for.
You guys do this for events, so, why not for these kinds of caches?

Sorry, I was just trying to help. The information in the Australian regional wiki said it's based on advice from GCHQ and I'd assumed that advice would apply globally. Obviously not.

As far as the definition of "Specialised Equipment" goes, again apologies for quoting from the Australian wiki but this is their distinction between specialised equipment (T5 rating) and a special tool (attribute):

    SPECIAL EQUIPMENT

These are things requiring training to use, safety equipment such as helmets or life jackets, and are not part of the caching tool kit you can carry easily, or the tool kit the average geocacher would carry most of the time. Boats, large ladders, and rope climbing or abseiling equipment are examples. For example, a technical tree climb requiring ropes etc. would be a T5. But a free climb without the need for special equipment would be 4.5 or lower (often much lower). Once you’re up there if it’s hard to open or find the cache then that would be reflected in the D rating. A pole cache (tree fishing) on the other hand, would be generally be low Terrain in most cases if it’s easy to get to the position you need to be at, but higher Difficulty to reflect a tricky manipulation.

I definitely second the terrain part, but I would love to see them being D5! This also includes "tools" and yes, it indeed IS a special tool. Nobody that I'm aware of doing these kind of caches had that tool upfront. Every single one of them extra bought such a pole just for that specific reason. So, please, let them be D5/Tx

    Hi!

Is there any update on when we can expect the map working as usual again? It's also my default page and the one that I'm mainly using, so, it would be nice to have it working again!

    Thanks,

    Christian

I don't use a phone for geocaching (I have an Oregon 700 for that) but I still have a phone that gets used for ALs. All my caching trips are planned on the desktop computer, with either individual GPX files or PQs uploaded to the Oregon, so it would be handy to at least be able to see at a glance on the geocaching map if there are any ALs nearby. Especially since the maps on the website have a scale but the ones on the apps don't.

You might want to use GSAK then. Import your PQs and also import the ALs, there's an extra macro just that for. Then use the Leaflet macro to show all of them on a nice map. Helps me a lot when planning trips.

If you don't use a phone for geocaching then you cannot do Adventure Labs.

Didn't know that GPSr devices stopped working recently... I'm using my Oregon 750t for geocaching and I also did put every lab cache onto it, too. Helps a lot when walking around, seeing there's an AL, too. And guess what; I'm absolutely able to use the AL app on my phone then, as there's no other option. But still not using any geocaching app... ;)

The solution: Switch to "Search geocaches" view, and you can use My Lists button instead of Pocket Query. It's a nice feature, because you don't need create Pocket Query from your list.

Nice try... But I'd prefer using PQs anyways ;-) I do have a FTF PQ showing me all the not yet found caches. That wouldn't work with lists. Plus, many other of my PQs exist for a reason. It's easy to set up a PQ for an area you haven't been yet, or where the results might change fairly quick. So, lists are cool, but they are by no means a working replacement for PQs.

Thank you (and others who have mentioned it) for the feedback of the default sort by "Found On" date when viewing someone's finds. This is on our list of possible future improvements.

Could you please replace "possible" with "important"? ;) I guess that most of us using the found list are searching by date and not distance. In fact I the only reason to search by distance for me might be looking for the closest and furthest cache. But searching for my last finds is what I'm doing on a daily base. So, having this as the default simply reflects my standard usage.

Oh, and leaving out country and state also isn't exactly what I like. It's another thing that makes this list version less useful for my needs. So, it would be cool to get that back. And yes, as it seems to affect these lists in general it would also be a general improvement then! I gave up on mentioning the waste of space, so I don't say more about that... :P

Tried everything that has been suggested here. Still doesn't work. It saves a short text, but not the profile created by FSG :-( Too bad. I even deleted my profile pic, also didn't help. Will see what happens now and when this gets fixed finally...

Thanks for your ideas and suggestions, I really appreciate it!

Ok, got a solution, that works for me!

It seems that my profile info became too long. After removing one part, it could be saved again. So, there seems to be a length limit, can't tell, how much it is, but there is one...

Thanks again for coming up with some ideas on what I could try!

    Bye,

    Use this URL:

NB: Unfortunately calling GS's web pages directly (#Biography or #Content) through the # sign is broken with one of the last site updates.

  16. Hi!

I can't save my profile "about" any longer. I'm using GSAK and FSG to create my personal profile and it did work until last week. I wanted to upload my actual changes and after saving the "about" part is empty.

Any ideas what this could be? Too much info in that part? Or "just" a simple bug?

    Thanks,

    Christian

So, for best security (which is still not fool-proof) an AL should be online only, no package downloads that include the answer in any form, and require connectivity to even submit an answer, checked at the server end, and throttled to a human-reasonable rate.

Otherwise, the system will be hacked. (as we're seeing now if the reports are true and that infamous TB code group is now also publishing completion codes and instructions for location-spoofing - but there is no counter to that except allowing the AL owner to manage logs on their own ALs, and possibly report abusers, just like with the TB loggers)

I know, nothing is perfect and there always will be ways to cheat. I can see it with my own AL. Some cheated with coords and logged all the answers within minutes, what isn't possible as they are far off each others. It just doesn't have to be too strict, that just discourages the fair players too much. Will see what the future brings...

The benefit of live connection being required is that the game 'package' does not exist offline. Otherwise you have a Wherigo, essentially. If it's possible for someone to get the package offline, there's no reason it can't be hacked to get the necessary task/answers.  The reason ALs benefit from being online is that it's unique from other cache types and provides a different experience - but that means it does require another tool to complete. If you don't have the tool, you can't claim the find.

Lots of text deleted, sorry ;) The Adventure doesn't necessarily need to have answers included. A hash code of the correct answer would be enough, so you best case might be able to get the questions. At least technically spoken :)

Geofencing: If you don't do it, answers will be shared pretty quick. And even with that Mega option you suggested, what should stop people from just handing out the answers at the logging points? So, best option in such cases really might be, to NOT have an Adventure lab there. That's at least what I would prefer!

I've noticed that images on my profile page are also going through the imageproxy.

It's screwed up a couple of stats bars that I used to display.

True, quite some of my maps will not be shown correctly now. I'm using GSAK/FSG to create my stats and about every map that is using an overlay to show some extras is broken now :( I would be more than happy to get that fixed.
