  1. take a pellet gun, i have a few, they look real enough to get you shot by the cops, but are nonlethal and legal, so carry it openly to discourage any wouldbe attackers and leave the cannons at home, (you could take out an eye with em to if you really really wanted to)
  2. i doubt this person is a geocacher in the strictest sense of the term. in video games (online multiplayer, roleplaying) people spend, hours a day for months and or years to develop their characters, there are also people called "killers" they are not there to enjoy the game, only to ruin it for other people, they get off on destroying peoples hard work for no other reason than that they can. this guy is probably the same brand of character. stumbled upon a cache or the site, found out about it somehow anyway, and decided it would be fun to ruin it for people. these people are everywhere, they have no lives of their own so they just go around ruining things for other people.

  4. i see it as irrelevant to the discussion at hand. the reason i mentioned it was to clarify that i am not some anti-gun whiner. but as i said (this is in reference to caching) i dont want people out there with lethal weapons (that have no other use) who are spooked by their own shadow, as a few of the previous posters seem to be.. i cant find it now to cut and paste but they said they were spooked by people in the woods who turned out to be hikers and cachers... when i am CACHING, i dont want to end up a few ounces of lead heavier because some paranoid lunatic got spooked because they werent the only ones in a 5 mile radius while they were CACHING... i think thats pretty relevant to CACHING.
  5. there has to be a middle of the road. im all for guns, though i dont have a real one (i have a replica mp5... thats the one i would want) point being... guns are not the problem, its the attitude of the people that have them. from what i read it seems trouble is brewing in the sport. the "i need a rocketlauncher to protect myself on a cache" attitude is the problem (i know noone actually said rocket launcher, its called hyperbole look it up)if you are getting spooked by other people being in the woods at the same time as you, (as mentioned before "they turned out to be cachers or hikers") I sure as &^%$ dont want you to have a gun anywhere near me, its that kind of paranoia that will end up in someone getting shot for no reason. in bear and beast country i can understand, wildcats(the big ones anyway) and bears are about the only thing i wouldnt take on with my stick. if the guy has a knife and i have a walking stick, he's screwed, i have the better reach. as far as people with guns, by the time they've drawn on you, its a little late to be going for your peice, and if you draw first, well.. i think you can see where this is going... this fact leaves me confident my walking stick is appropriate for even this. most muggers, attackers approach their victems first, so it would seem to me my chances of knocking their gun away with my stick, (which they may not realize doubles as a weapon) is just as good if not better than me getting a shot off first (they will know what the gun is for and be more prepared). on the flipside, if you are responsible about it and carry a gun as a natural course of life, go to it, but it shouldnt be a "caching item" (unless as one other member said, you are getting some hunting in on the side or in bear and beast country) as for the 98lb woman 250 pound rapist scenario, their weakness is that by the nature of what they are doing they are exposing the most painsensitive part of their body, at close range (your not going to know that 250 pound guy is a rapist at 20 paces.)the knee would be a more effective weapon than a gun, which he could pry from her thin fingers and use to get rid of a potential witness/evidence/etc. as i said before im all for guns. and i think gun outlawing is stupid can you actually picture someone out there?? "well i was gonna commit some murders and robberies today but dang it they outlawed guns, and i wouldnt wanna break the law" how stupid can some people be?? drugs are illegal, and look at any streetcorner pharmacy... (heck cachers run into "labs" in the woods...) so this is my verdict. no guns for paranoid freaks... which some people here do sound like, they are ok for people who are responsible and dont see "attacker" in every shadow. heck.... come to think about it i may need a gun to protect me from toting cachers...
  6. what if a cache werent designated for charity.. just a "please leave me money" type thing... i know that it makes controversy, but the point is this. everyone seems to get VERY upset with this cache or any other caches they dont like as though their mere existence were an offront to all things good and holy. so this is my take, dont go flaming on jeremy for every cache you dont absolutely love (im sure you have placed a few that suck, and if you havent placed any you really dont have any place judging those that have at least they put out the effort.) now i know there are some that should be removed, those that break the law and make the sport look bad (ie porn or weapons in caches... i think we have all seen these in the forums somewhere) other than that if you get to a cache and dont like it dont leave anything but a signature. unless im mistaken the coords dont take you out to the woods where a guy is waiting with a gun to rob you. maybe if you cant understand that this isnt the sport for you...
  7. the big problem with night caching (which i like) is the cops... they just dont seem to understand. my first night cache, (which we didnt find) ended with one of my friends burning his shirt for light, cops chasing us (not for the makeshift torch but for being in the park after it was closed) saying anyone they found would be arrested (and they called my friends house and had our vehicle taken away, stranding us there) and us hiding out at another friends apartment for the night. yeah... night caching is the best caching....

  11. I dont really see a problem with it. yes i agree most tracts are BORING. despite whether or not you agree with what they say. So, perhaps, make your own. its the personal touch that makes it worth taking. you could get a computer mic and record yourself giving your oppinions on the happenings of the day, if that involves political or religious "advertising" so be it. make yourself known. the community connection is what this sport is all about.
  12. i say hide it in an underwater cave or a beaver house... hehehe, let them do the work then you use there den to stash your cash, and get some pelts while your at it. it it's in a cave the water problem shouldnt be, and.. with permission, there are ways to build your own. (if beavers can do it the average human can) make it large enough to hide the cache in and for a person to stand up in so they dont have to take the cach out. the only problem i could forsee with this (provided you do it right) is that watersnakes may find it to be an inviting location to make their home... cache with care.

    picnic

ok, the annual kc geocachers picnic was on july 22 last year if i read correctly so what about this year... i wanna meet other cachers... please, whens a picnic this year, let me come.... anyway, i think it would be cool to meet some fellow cachers and discuss developments in the sport (such as the rino.)
  15. how big are the screens now on the e-trexes?? these would be great for camping (espescially with kids, if they get lost just have them keep talking till you track them down.) or for paintball, or for many many things i could think of. you shouldnt lose any performance.. 2 different receivers for 2 different kinds of signals. though, i cant say a one inch screen does anyone any good, i say make a larger screen and im there, 2 1/4 inches maybe...
  16. at first it was funny, then amusing, now its irritating. how in Gods green earth could anyone make so many gramatical and spelling errors in one sentance?? and how could they make the same errors every single time. obviously we are dealing with someone who has half of a first grade english level. i could eat alphabits and crap out more coherent thoughts than this. could someone please put him out of my misery!!!??? though it would be illegal, i would say there are better ways to do this idea. say, i leave the "prescription" or as bob would say proscripshun drugs. then the first finder would take them and leave a couple hundred bucks, then i would go collect the money and put in more "prescription" drugs for the next person.... yeah, i think i may be on to something geocache for a living "pharmacy cache"... (you could always empty the real drugs and fill the capsules w/ baking soda)... its cheaper that way, cut the overhead raise the profits.

  18. quote:Originally Each gun and ammo box is marked with the team name. If you accidentally find an opponent's cache, you are NOT allowed to disturb it. Of course, you now know that an opponent will probably be heading towards that location, and you can use that to your advantage. go to organized geocaching subject geopaintball... the problem w/ this part is if you draw randomly how can you mark the names on the box before hand??
  19. well, i think ammo boxes are fine... only found one so far, but there are other things. minard uses mayonayse jars the big plastic kind like resturaunts use in the kitchen. so thats kind of like a trademark thing which is cool. as for loonys running around the woods hiding little boxes.... oh wait a minute, never mind. i myself have a few hobbies that take me into the woods, sword fighting, (if you think hiding a cache in town will get you into trouble try doing this in public view) which of course we do in all safety. martial arts, geocaching. (though i've never combined the 3) of course if you are worried about geoterrorists you could purchase one of my custom "what if a cataclysm happens while im geocaching and im thrown into an apocolyptic nightmare" survival kits. a description is posted in the what should i carry in my backpack thread. a partial list... C4, shotgun, knives and a sword... there is more, enough to defend yourself from those pesky cache bombers. as for the monsters under the bed, they've always been the ones afraid of me.... i cant figure out why... im so friendly...

  21. somebody here has the wrong idea about geocaching. i always thought of it as a sort of "underground" sport. an "insider" thing. the outside world has no idea about. i have seen some stoooooopid virtual caches, enough that if the description doesnt hit my interest, i wont go (and yes some i think should be archived as a waste of time and space) see, heres the thing. theres a park in my town thats a v-cache. well great whoopty doo... its an awesome park, very nice, but hardly a cache site since its something most people know of and have been to that have never heard of geocaching. a good V-cache is the lone grave outside of town that is from the 1800s of a one year old child. because it is something unique to geocachers, and people who are curious enough to pull over and see what all the flowers are for, (not many people most likely) by that same token this is a good v-cache. not because the building itself is significant or unique. its that understanding of its history that makes it so. a thousand people a day may pass by it but how many when they do can make that kind of a connection, and after all isnt that what its all about? we have our own little community of people, all connected by the cache. its an exclusive club, a "secret" society. only those with a sense of adventure and the good fortune to have heard of the game, by being reffered or stumbling upon a cache are let in. i find it a bit disturbing that someone would come in here and say "i cant get this cache archived and it frustrates me" as i said. im not a big fan of locationless or V-caches, heck i practicaly hate them, but for the sake of this and the few that are like it... i can accept that the feature is there. if you want to complain about a v-cache complain about public parks or "nice views" those have nothing to do with geocaching (unless something is hidden there, or there is a history; like this building) so i say vivela this V-cache
  22. this is what i am talking about, you all know the games, resident evil, silent hill, you have to go through the game fighting monsters with a hunting knife some herbs if your lucky and about 5 bullets for each gun, again... if your lucky. so this is the scenario. the players come with the basics, safety gear and their marker, and a gpsr. no ammo no special tricks like night vision. as i have heard it these are sometimes prizes at scenario games. so no bringing them. they can be hidden in "secret areas" or given away at the end as "unlocked features" if they are not found. so at the beginning each player would be issued 5 paintballs and a list of coords (which can be D/L into their gpsr w/ a laptop and easygps. now teams can go anyway the scenario planner wants it, but after the game starts, the players would have to find ammo if they needed/wanted it. so conservation is key. imagine, 3 enemies a few yards away, you have one paintball left, check the nearest waypoint on your GPS..... its .12 miles away. as for the "secret rooms" high prizes... more than just paintballs. in every s/h (survival/horror) game i know a number of items must be collected to gain access to the good stuff. no different here, fragments of the "secret room" coordinates would be hidden throughout the playing area and would have to be assembled to find the room and the prize, which could be a better marker or nightvision or whatever, (which is why the extra toys would be banned.) if you want to go further, ban markers... make them use feild markers. just my thoughts... please feel free to add or correct.
  23. i take a digital camera, also plan to add my custom, "what if a cataclysm occurs while im geocaching and im suddenly thrown into a postapocolyptic nightmare" survival kit. this includes: C4: you never know when you are going to need to blow up the stronghold of some postapocolyptic warlord. a rocket launcher: a machine gun: a regular sidearm and of course a boom stick(shotgun): some garrat wire and rope: anything that will make fire: a katana (sword): of course plenty of knives: that should do it for now, if i forgot anything let me know. (maybe i will sell these on ebay or leave them as trade items) ok so thats about all i can think of right now i will post again if i think of more.
  24. if there is a funeral no one is at, you should go. i heard a story that according to one of those shows that researches urban legends is actually true about a lady who visited a funeral w/ no ones will. turns out the deceased was a millionaire that no one liked, his will, everything he owned would be divided evenly between the people at the funeral; the only one there gets the prize... but seriously the key isnt where you step but your attitude while you are there. be quiet and respectful at anytime, whether family members are there or not, these places are something placed there to honor a loved one, and though a cache in and of itself is not disrespectful, we need to be sure our behavior there is not disrespectful either.
  25. tupperware bombs in graveyards... is that a big problem these days??? ok, so this is what i say. people leave things in cemetaries all the time. and, if this is a person(in the grave) that you knew and loved, then why not. if it were a loved one of mine, i may consider it as a way to honor that person. we all have someone who we love enough that we think everyone should meet them (or not, maybe we want them all to ourselves ) so why not a cemetary cache along the same lines, on the lid of the cache have a pic and a short bio, and as trading items maybe a few things that represent that person. then everyso often if its a grave you visit regularly anyway, you could "refresh" the cache. just my thoughts, thats what i think.
