  1. i honestly dont remember but i think it was surfing the web... i found it before the media got ahold of it but didnt get into it till later.

"...Not all those who wander are lost..." usagi is japanese for rabbit. i know this because i took a japanese course in High school, wish i could remember all i learned. and a character in the ninja turtels cartoon usagi yojimbo (yojimbo means gaurdian) our japanese teacher who was an "exchange student" of sorts (she was over here learning english so she could be a tour guide over there, apparently it pays well) always got a kick out of that.
  3. it seems more than one has found a "beaver made" stick and thought it was a good walking stick, so that settles it. im gonna catch me some beavers and open up a walking stick factory. they do the work, i get the money. i hope they dont decide to form a union though, and i wonder what kind of employment laws apply to them. i can see it now, high quality, tooth made by beavers, walking sticks. i'll be a millionare in no time....
  4. so you and me are in... lets start a petition, garmin can be one of the sponsors..(i want a free set of rinos ) i think maybe this is something we should pursue... maybe post a new topic w/ "please ignore" in the title so i suppose it should be called "the amazing cache" instead of the great cache. oh well. whatever, as long as i get to travel all over the place caching with a new rino. (the advanced model)
  5. and i have clarified a MILLION times when i say kill i am not referring to only people, that is your word dont try to put it in my mouth. man machine or beast, it makes no difference. i find it very disturbing that you are either a1:so immoral, for lack of a better word, to keep trying to make it as though i said something i didnt long after i clarified it, or b2 so stupid not to have been able to understand by now. in either case you are one of the people i would not trust with a gun. why? because whether immoral or stupid.... i wouldnt trust someone with either of those qualities to handle one. anyway, this is my final post on the matter of you, it taxes me, and insults my intellegence... go and peddle you nonsensicle numbers elswhere (oooh, this is the first time i have told someone off in here) if someone wants a gun for sport, defense or whatever reason, get it, but be sure you admit to what it is, and what it is for, and use it responsibly, that is all. i would gladly own several guns knowing they were designed to kill. i can enjoy them at the range, in the woods hunting. and though i would never wish to take a human life i could use it for defense. (now thats an entirely different debate which i wont get into, "when does defence justify killing a person") and the reason i am no longer going to debate w/ this guy is that he seems to want to make them one and the same. and it begs one last question, if the purpose is not to kill why does everyone think a nonlethal replica is such a bad idea??
  6. quote:1) Is it true that the only (or even primary) use of a gun user is to *kill* people? In 98% of defensive gun uses not one shot is fired, so I'd say the answer is clearly enough "No." a factoid, looks like a fact, smells like a fact, aint a fact... "three out of five doctors say smoking crack is good for you" .... depends on which five doctors you ask....and this also depends on alot of things. thats cute but misleading.. for us to use this to say that guns are not designed to kill we would have to say that a1 98 percent of guns used in defence did not have firing pins, they were there only for looks, (since they, according to you served the purpose they were designed for without being fired) and that 100% of gun use is defensive. the fact is, that you are not taking into account military or police use of guns, or attackers. now lets hypothetically match up attackers with defenders, (this assumes that the same amount of people attack unarmed people with guns as people with guns defend themselves from attackers that are using some other weapon) already defensive gun use is only 50% of gun use, add police use, that shrinks ( i do not even pretend to know how much, in fact i would like to know where you get your numbers) ad military use it shrinks again, add hunters (no one said we are talking about killing people, or the moral value of the killing at hand only that they are designed to kill) the number drops again, now instead of focusing on america lets go worldwide, in those countries that allow for defensive guns the ratio is still hypotheticly 50/50 so that doesnt change things, but some countries ban guns so in those countries the criminals do drop the % of guns used for defence, then police use world wide and military use world wide drops it even more. all in all and this is just a number i am throwing out there, i would say maybe 10% of gun use is defensive. again i have not asked every gun user so i wouldnt know that conclusively but i think maybe i will look into it.
  7. quote:Originally posted by Criminal: I’m sure everyone is aware of recent events and won’t be putting an ammo can up in the supports of a local bridge. Duh. so i should move that cache??? lol, im with you all the way here. people say "use common sense when placing a cache" i say use common sense when placing that call to the bomb squad. most of the terrorists that we are at war with today have 2 goals when blowing something up, or 3. 1. blow up alot of people 2. make sure alot of other people know about the first lot that got blown up(international headlines). 3.blow themselves up (hey no body said it was a great occupation) so, when deciding to call the bombsquad about that scary looking package out in the middle of BFE, ask yourself these questions, who's it gonna kill, and who's gonna know about it. once you do that you should be able to tell a threat from a geocache. but just in case, i will give an example. example one: you are out in the woods going for a walk, and happen upon an ammo box sticking partialy out of a tree. there is no one around for miles, and you can just make out GE on the box. this is; a1: a geocache that has been recently placed and you havent found it yet (or for those nongeocachers, some stash someone hid for some reason that doesnt concern you) or b2: a bomb that is all part of an elaborate terrorist plot to destroy americas trees. answer a1 example 2: you are in the mall of america when you notice a container (could be anything from a box to a duffel bag) right next to a support collum in the middle of a large crowd and the guy who had been holding in five seconds ago is now making a quick gettaway. is this; a1: a geoca... aww heck you should get the idea by now... if the container is blinking twitching or strapped to someone in a large crowded area it might be a bomb. if its hidden out in the woods, what would be the point. now putting on my fire retardent suit for the flamage to come. well criminal, you started it but i guess im gonna be takin the heat for it.
  8. there is a group of guys i used to run with, into all kinds of fun things, swordfighting and the like, especially in the woods at night, and making cheesey home movies, mostly based on highlander and that old hercules TV show. anyway when i first started caching i decided to let them in on it. now being as we are all "manly men" and very keen in our instincts, they were up for the adventure of romping through the woods but leary of this maplike device. but we decided to go, there were six of us, including one man, about 8 to ten years older than the rest of us but mentally handicaped, he hung out with us all the time. so we borrowed a van from one of my friends parents. well we park outside the park and go in about dusk. as we near the area it is getting darker and we see a car driving by slowly with a spotlight (which we duck) and head into the woods looking for the cache, some way in there we are out of light so one of the guys takes off his shirt wraps it around a stick and, viola a torch. we heard some garbled voices in the distance, but ignored them, didnt find the cache so we decided to go back. turns out the local police had run the plates and had my friends parents get the van to strand us. from the tiremarks in the grass, they had parked their cars off the road to hide from us and had been lying in wait for over an hour before they gave that up. so we found another way out of the park while 2 of the guys went to see where the van was (we didnt know until after it was all over that someone had come and gotten it) another friend of ours picked us up accross the street when she found out what was going on. (calls were made, and this was really nothing new, except the geocaching, luckily none of us had our swords) so four of us piled into this little geo storm, and were taken back to her apt to wait for the other two so we could figure out what to do from there, all in all it was a fun night and an adventure that makes for a good story.
  9. actually, if you would turn off that darn GPS and turn on your TV... hmm... thats a step backwards huh?? it's already been done worldwide, without the GPS. teams of two racing literally around the world, given money at each stage to pay for travel and any other needs of completing the next stage. it is called "The Great Race" (i didnt just pull the great cache name out of thin air) the tasked ranged from going into a salsa club in south america to get a "token" from a salsa dancer, to finding Nelson Mandella's prison cell in South Africa. (one team, a brother and sister, lost their money and actually stood outside the bus station "begging" so they could get bus fair. it was pretty interesting to watch how inventive the people were in their quest to be the first to the next global destination, i just say add the geocaching element. personally i think it would be great publicity for our sport, and be a fun event in and of it'self.
  10. thank you leatherman, thats the term . and like i said, it's all i have been told, even by your dept. standards center mass is first. which is the point, and i notice you didnt mention any apendages... (arms legs, not to kill)
  11. So you get the point, I hope. To say "guns are designed to kill," is (1) a lie, and (2) if it weren't a lie, it would still be intentionally misleading. he who lies is a liar, and 2, is come on now, intentionally misleading is a lie, who is this guy, bill clinton?? "i did not have relations with that gun" the point i made was not that guns can not be used nonlethaly, the point, was and still is that they are made/created/designed with lethal power specificly in mind. hence the nonlethal methods. stungun, tazer etc.. (a point which continues to be ignored) this whole thing is silly. why not just admit that guns are lethal weapons which they are, and as such, people who are not able to handle such a responsibility should not be armed with them, as people who can handle it should be. why all the PC garbage??? i am not currently a gun owner, though i hope to be in the future. and i say without apology, that i am (whether with a gun or any other thing including my hands) prepared to kill IF THE SITUATION WARRANTS IT. as to the police example a police man that shoots someone in the head is in big trouble no matter what. i have several friends, police and military, and have taken many of the classes that are in the local police academy curriculum. and one thing that remains constant from instructors and friends alike, shoot for the primary mass (though i can not think of what the official term they use is at the moment) in other words, you are less likely going to hit an arm a leg or a head, so when you shoot, you shoot for the chest, the biggest and easiest target. every time a cop pulls the trigger there is paperwork and investigation (legalities) to be sure everything was legit. which means dont shoot unless its ABSOLUTELY necessary, and by that it usually means having used all other means of subduing. im reminded of one of those "real tv" shows i saw one time where a very similar situation was at hand. (the man had a katana, a samauri sword) swat team all over and everything. i'll give you a hint, they didnt shoot out his legs... actually they got the fire dept to hit him with the hose. now i know your all thinking so what. whats the point? the point is, they used another nonlethal means of incapasitation. why?? i'll let you chomp on that one. and thank you screamappillar for being one of the few (though i have seen some) respectful people in here..
  12. alot of pretty words, but what do they really mean?? let us examine the basic workings of a gun, in VERY lamans terms. in a FUNCTIONING gun there are two elements, the gun itself, and the ammunition. (here is where i may have to qualify my previous statement that guns are designed to kill) the gun itself is simply a mechanism to activate or launch the ammunition. they can range from very complex to being a carved peice of wood with a rubber band and a nail. (very very dangerous but yes they do exist as homemade makeshift gun.) the ammunition is a small amount of incindiary powder locked into a casing benieth a metal/lead/sometimes rubber, "nugget" when set off, this sends the "nugget" flying out at, and in the case of non rubber (assuming that the target is not missed completely) into the target. this destroys any tissue that it goes through, (there are even mention in here of hollow tip bullets which do even more damage.) the purpose of this damage is not to "cause an attacker to flee" or to "injure" them, as i pointed out previously and you chose to ignore, there are other tools for that. the purpose for sending a high velocity object into a target is to nullify it. to "kill" it. the gunsmith does not go into his shop and then you call me a liar... sir, i hope you can back this up. as i can back up calling you a liar. you directly quoted what i said that guns are desined to kill, then proceded in your own translation of what i said to add the word humans. not what i said, not what i meant. i know of no guns company that bosts his guns to be the most intimidating in appearance or have the scariest sound, or nonlethal injuries. what is the measure of a gun?? two big ones are accuracy and stopping power. how well can it hit the target and how much damage can it do. i may not know alot of flowery words, or be the most eloquent guy around, but i do know common sense and common decency, by your posts, and the accusations they contain, it seems you lack both.
  13. quote:Originally posted by Budney: quote:...this person however has come to the conclusion that because seneca is a male pilot who doesnt believe in guns he is either a terrorist or a rapist. You don't seem to comprehend what the poster said, so here it is in a nutshell: Seneca reasoned that by equipping yourself with a gun and the ability to use it, you are "prepared to be a killer". The poster replied that the same flawed logic would make Seneca himself a terrorist and rapist: 1. Seneca flies an airplane. Therefore he is fully capable of flying it into a building. He is "prepared to be a terrorist". 2. Seneca (presumably) has a male organ. Therefore he is fully "prepared to be a rapist." You reply, "having an airplane doesn't make one a terrorist, and having a phallus doesn't make one a rapist." Exactly! And having a gun doesn't make one a killer, either. (Tossing in the phrase "prepared to be" is really a red-herring, designed to obsure the faulty logic at work here.) --Len. perhaps you are not getting the premise of the failed logic at work here... airplanes are designed to carry people from one place to another for whatever reason, which is why they have seats instead of explosives (if seneca flew some sort of manned missle that would be a different case and you know what i mean so i dont wanna hear any of that *&^% that a plane can be used as a missle) the "male" is not designed for rape and so being a male by birth does not make one prepared to rape. guns, are designed to kill, not to make tea or bake a cake, or bring people back from the dead, they are designed specifically for lethal capabilities, that is why for nonlethal use we have an entirely different class of weapons, (ie stunguns, tasers, etc etc,) so by carrying a gun you are equiping yourself to kill, as seneca mentioned, preparing. now a note to george leroy tirebiter, "i think its time you should leave, i'll call you a taxi. if you dont want to leave in a taxi you can leave in a huff and if thats too soon you can leave in a minute and a huff" given your avatar and name that should make a little sense to you, in fact it makes such little sense your probably the only one that will get it.
  14. i think in the airport a small metal box, with a digital display would be nice, to display the number of bugs in the cache. of course so as not to have them crumpled up, keep any wires nice and loose. (not disconnected, just not bundled up) of course it should also be put in a place that is out of the way yet not too hard to find... seriously though what about a tended cache??? if one of the shops/bars at the airport was willing to keep it behind the counter, the cacher drops the password "travelbug" and the person at the counter coughs it up, or recieves the drop, whichever one. of course you would want to have a more original password, but i think it would add a fun little "james bond" feel to the game.
  15. in all the years of handheld videogames they have had all kinds of peripherals, sega even had a tv reciever... so why not GPS. (this is about getting a new one for the youngins right??) seeing the avatar w/ the kid playing GBA gave me the idea. including the directional pad (that little + used as a "joystick" for those who dont know" there are 8 buttons on a GBA, and 6 on my etrex legend. so operation wouldnt be a problem, and look, color maps and everything. (spending $60 on a gba is cheaper than muli $100s for a palm) now if only i had the money to develope and market it, id never have to work again.
  16. i havent had this problem either, of course, being a legendary gunman, i use a legend. it only seems proper. one other thing you may try is zooming in. i know if i dont then the line could obscure some things, like, my home town. see how far in you can zoom and if that helps.
  17. q: the first since you are opening up for ideas what about benefits? ie: if you are going to open a company, any chance of a groundfloor entry for some fellow geocachers? who better to keep up the latest designs than the most avid users? ( i ask cause im unemployed, need a career and dont want to end up working 12 hours a day 7 days a week at the car plant w/ my dad and brother in law) on to ideas. i dont know much about flash memory, but i do think removable chips would be a great idea, store a set of waypoints then load them up when you need them. one thing i think would be great is to make external memory for the garmin etrex series, this is how it would work, imagine your computer cable if the part that hooks to the GPS had a memory chip in it, containing a program similar to easygps (so you could upload and download waypoints and tracks and whatever else to it w/out it needing to be hooked to the computer) i have 2 legends one of which i upgraded tonight (software) i also have an ipaq which can be synched to my desktop. when it is synched a new window comes on the desktop that is not normaly there, that is my ipaq window for uploading/downloading between the two. the etrex chip could work the same way etrex = desktop chip = ipaq. now i know you wanted ideas for YOUR gpsr, but no reason not to also look into making peripherals for existing ones right?? the drawback you would need to get garmin compatible software, mostlikely sourced by them, or maybe not, i guess the program would be in the chip, and it would be the interface on the GPS, since thats your thing no prob for you 2.also, i say go the way of the rino, some kind of transmitter, maybe closer to the nextel cellphone walkie but this would not only be fun but a good safety feature. would there be a way transmitt from a gpstr to a gpsr in case of an emergency??? 3.some kind of "online" feature not full internet but some way out in the feild to d/l caches, waypoints, applications, maps, whatever. 4 fully customizable waypoints for those special occasions, mark the spot you met your wife. so when you put the pointer on it on the map screen it says "McDonalds parking lot [where billy and suzy first met]" some people may not care but others may like to for whatever reason mark significant events in that way. (you could even mark the seat you were sitting in at the ballpark when your favorite team won the pennant, whatever, and it would say that) 5. thats about it for now, i have other ideas rolling around up here somewhere but im not sure where up here or what they are right now.

  19. ok, maybe jeremy could find a sponsor for this one and we could all enjoy. a nationwide multicache, have people put on teams, and each team has to travel the country to find each part of the cache. it would be kind of a grander scale of another idea i had, a geodate. which i will explain first so "the great cache" makes more sense. i input the coordinates into the gps and give it to the girl. she then has to find that area and perform a fun little task before recieving the next coordinates. while she is going all over town on her little "quest" (each task/waypoint would be something special, so she could get to know me a little better) i would be at the final waypoint preparing dinner, the main prize. so by the time she arrived dinner would be ready and it would give us something to talk about, a little more original than dinner and a movie and potentialy cheaper. so the great chache. (or geodash) each team is given coordinates which they must find. once they find them they must perform some kind of task to get the next set of coordinates. there could even be diff coords awarded depending on how well the task was performed. (ie do well get coord A, do poorly get coord B at coord B you have to perform another task to get coord A.) also rewards for first finds. and just so the playing field is level everyone should have the same gpsrs (not so subtle hint, perhaps garmin could donate a rino for each player... good publicity.....) teams can travel together or split up, but must be together in the end to win the grand prize. (and at specific waypoints in between) anyways, thats my idea... just cause i wanna travel the country geocaching...
  20. in regards to your inquiry, i have 2 units, actually 3 but one i havent been able to find for months, to clarify what people have been saying etrex is not a GPS it is a series of GPS, ie, etrex, etrex summit, etrex venture, and etrex legend. i have 2 legends and the lost one i believe is a venture. they are very good, however (i thought it was worth it) the legend is around 250, you may want to wait and get a set of rinos, (depending on how good they turn out to be) they will also run 200 to 250. the thing with them though is that they have a built in 2-way radio with tracking ie if you and your son are camping and he gets lost all he has to do is call you on the 2-way and HIS position will show up on YOUR screen. i myself am thinking of upgrading to this, again it depends on how they are when they come out, the biggest worry now is screen size. but if that turns out to be ok, i will probably take the plunge.
  21. never been there, but according to my trusty etrex legend, (entered coords and zoomed into 1.2 miles) it is less than a mile from the cavern city airport. on highway 62.... maybe a control tower or something???

  23. i just now thought of this, jeremy said post a v-cache there to get people to go, but what if these myst folks already knew of geocaching and posted one themselves, why not run a search for caches closest to these coords??...
