I have a Garmin GPS 18 that I use on my laptop. I have somehow ripped the cord from the receiver. Is the receiver uniquely tied into the specific N-Route software that I originally bought? Can I buy just another receiver from ebay and use it? I spoke with Garmin today and they tried to tell me that the receiver was matched to the programs that I originally bought and that no other receiver would work, even if it was an identical GPS 18 receiver? Does anyone know for sure if this is true? Thanks!

I am looking at getting either a Delorme or a Garmin 18 for use with my pc in my car. Which unit would ya'll recommend? Which mapping software would be better? It will be run by Windows 98, so I will have to go with the S&A 2004 for Delorme. Will either work with programs such as ExpertGPS? Is the Delorme able to export/import info from a GPSr such as a 60cs? Thanks!

I am using a 60CS. I did not completely clear the track log before I started today. I can see where that would be a problem. I would start tracking and then stop tracking at the end of the trail, then I would save it and name it. All of the trails were dead ends trails. Why shoould I not save it before sending it to the PC? Thanks!

I am trying to map out some 4-wheeler trails on some land that I ride on. I thought everything was going good until I open the tracks up into ExpertGPS. The tracks don't end where I thought I ended them? The track will continue in a striaght line to another point or track? When I try to edit it, it is just a jumbled up mess! It does the same thing when I send the information from the GPS to MapSource. Even if I try to view the track on the GPS it just shoots off into space and does not end where I ended it. What am I doing wrong? Should I be saving them as routes instead of tracks? Please help!

How good is it and is it compatible with a program like ExpertGPS? What are its limitations other than just not being hand-held? Thanks!

I have the free trial downloaded onto my laptop that I run in my car of ExpertGPS. I just downloaded the BETA update of Mapsource also. I can not get the info to work between the 2 programs. Aslo, when I downloaded the BETA Mapsource, I no longer have a GPS tab to activate tracking? My files are being saved in the .gpx format. I also can not find files in ExpertGPS when I save them. They will show up, but then when I try to open them I get an error message saying ExpertGPS could not open the file document. Please someone help!

I have ExpertGPS downloaded and like it. I just have a few questions. 1. I can not get the file format for my MapSource into .gpx........I can not exchange info between the two? 2. I can create things like I want in ExpertGPS and name them, but when I go back to them I get a message that says the file does not exist? Is this because I am using the Free Trial? 3. Do you have to keep switching the interface formats on your GPSr to send and receive info btw the GPSr and ExpertGPS and then change the format again to start tracking? Is there not a setting that will do both? Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. That is exactly what I was looking for. I am sure that 21 tracks is all I will need from the hand held. So I can actually build trails and roads from Expert GPS. Will Easy GPS work? Thanks!

So far ya'll have been a huge help in my new adventures with a GPSr. I am wanting to know the best way to mark trails, such as 4-wheeler trails , and certain roads that are not listed on maps. I want to mark 4-wheeler trails and hunting locations and be able to print them out. I work as a State Trooper in NC and would like to have as detailed a map as possible of the area I work, including little country paths that are not on maps. I have a 60CS. I have read in my book that it will store 20 saved tracks? I have MapSource and EnRoute on my lap top in my car to use while I am driving. I have found out how to save trails/roads on MapSource, but is there a way to change them into a smooth line and possibly color them? I would like to change them from the connected dots that are displayed as tracks and have the names to show up. Is there away to mark more than 20 trails at one time with only the handheld? I guess I am looking for some sort of Map Building info? I could not use the search feature on the forum to find anythng. Also, is there a way to select which tracks or waypoints that you send to the MapSource pragram from the GPSr? Thanks for the help! I am sure I will have more questions, so please be patient.

I'm catching on. Is there a way to download more than 1 cache at a time from Geocache.com to EasyGPS? I have been doing 1 at a time and it takes awhile. I went back and forth 15 times. When i had 15 in EasyGPS I downloaded them to my GPS. Any Help?

I now have EasyGps downloaded. It does not open anything. When I click on the icon to dl the info from Geocache.com it says type GSAK and then something else? It will not open anything! I can not get rid of GSAK? I know I am an idiot, but plesae help!

Are you dragging them straight from Geocache.com? I can not get it to work? I had mapsource open and attempted to drag the onto there from the sight but that did not work? Please help!

I have a 178C GPS/Sounder combo for a boat that is mainly used for duck Hunting in the winter. Can I get a power cord for it and use it in the car just to play with? I know the sounder part would not work, just curious if the other functions would work. Thanks!

Hello, I have been reading here for several days and have just registered. I have tried to get my questions answered thru searching and reading, but I still need a few answers. I hope someone can help. I am a State Trooper in NC. I have a Lap Top that stays in my car for work. I also have a 60 CS. I have the USB cable and aslo a serial port/ 12v comboe cable. I can only get the computer to recognize the GPS with the USB cable attached. I am wanting to cut down on cables and just use the Serial/12v combo cable. What am I doing wrong and is one cable better than the other? I have the MApSource program downloaded. Is there a way to run the GPS thru the computer, just like the computer was GPS? Rather than jsut using it for transferrring waypoints? It will mostly be used for hunting and in my car for practice. I would also like to have a detailed map of the area that I work, Rockingham County, NC. If it is not available, can I create one? Thanks fro the help!
