  1. I have only just found this thread and damned if I am going to read the whole thing I live in New Zealand and would love to recieve some geocoins from overseas- prefer activated ones that I can release for you. PM or email me if you are interested. Cheers, ssarc
  2. I am very biased but if you like the outdoors make sure you spend a decent amount of time in the South Island
  3. Hardware Garmin 60cs Palm M105 (8mb) Software GSAK Isilox Isilox is a simple program, very easy to use. The Palm has heaps of memory and was very cheap. The mapping gps and Palm has made paperless caching easy
  4. Well, I'd hate to say it but I think this DOC involvement with Geocaching may bite us in the butt!! I cant see how geocaching can be offensive or illegal to anyone in New Zealand. It is not as if what we leave behind is trash, it is something left that is discreet and well maintained by cachers who visit the site. Cachers also help keep an area tidy as do alot of outdoors people by picking up litter. Calling Geocaching a "commercial enterprise" is laughable, it is merely a hobby or sport. I hope the DOC dont spend too much of the taxpayer funds setting up rules, memorandums or whatever so that cachers can continue doing their thing as we are. Thats my thoughts anyway
  5. Gidday phil Topomappro are very helpful and will provide user codes and passwords that will activate the file. The file fixes other problems as well with the program. Steve [This message was edited by tgsnoopy on January 02, 2003 at 12:25 PM.]
  6. No definite dates as yet, Ruth starts nightshift soon so will be out of action until around 7 January- possibly do the trip during the following week. It would depend on the weather- I'd hate to climb all that way to be clagged in by ****ty weather. Then again the weathers always good up here
  7. Well January is almost upon us, has anyone come up with any dates or ideas yet. One idea from another cacher was to do the paraparanoia cache in golden bay- it has yet to be found. The only downfall is that its a big climb to get there- approx 1100 metres up Ruth and I will try to get there in Jan/ Feb sometime anyway.
  8. Is there any way to add a feature that will show what caches travel bugs are in (without going through each lot of cache pages) What I was thinking- the older caches have blue dots, the new ones have red dots, well is it possible that when a travel bug is placed in a cache the cache as seen on nandors cool site would be shown as a different colour ie yellow. Its just an idea, I have no idea at all on computer programming so it may not even be possible to do Food for thought anyway
  9. By the looks of the forum pages and cache lists it appears that everyone is too busy with xmas to be doing any caching Merry xmas everyone, I'll look forward to the caching scene picking up soon. I have xmas day off work for a change
  10. __________________________________________________ However I still urge caution... the peanut bar is still there and may cause choking.. the cdrom may cause serious injury if the edge is rubbed furiously against the skin ... The pencil in with the log book could also be a hazard to eyes and the lollipop will be very painful if rammed up an orifice. _________________________________________________ Funny!!!
  11. I like the spit beach cache near dunedin, a magic walk along a rugged beach.
  12. One of my tricks is to turn around now and then and look back where you have come from. This is very useful if you have to backtrack for any reason. Another good trick is finding north using your watch- face the 12 to the sun, north is halfway between the 12 and the hour hand (the shortest gap ie at 4 oclock north is at 2oclock) Try it, it really does work!!! If you have a digital watch you have to imagine that your watch has an hour hand!!!
  13. Speaking of a reward for a hard earned cache. I was thinking of a speights or two would be a worthy reward for a cache at the top of a big hill climb or arduous bush bash. The only problem is that I think I saw something on the geocaching website saying alcohol, drugs and guns are unsuitable. I totally agree for the drugs and guns but a beer would be superb in a tough cache where cachers are unlikely to drag kids to.
  14. We have just been to Rotorua for a holiday, managed to get out and find a few caches there, some very nice locations to visit. We couldnt find one cache "death in vegas", it appears that the council has cleaned out the area using a digger, this has left the area bare. No sign of the cache. Another geocacher was there the day before us reporting the same thing on the cache page. I have emailed the cache owner for them to check out. Its a real shame as its the perfect cache to attract a travel bug from overseas travellers. I thought I would post this in case others were going to Rotorua.
  15. I agree with elfclan, $30 a year would be very attractive. $30US is $30 there,$30US is more than $60 here. Some sort of arrangement to make all membership costs equal would be great, very hard to implement though I imagine
  16. These stat sites seem to be inaccurate, I know for mine I have hidden 6 or 7 caches but it says I have hidden none. Perhaps that could be a new webpage to be created by one of New Zealands computer skill-blessed cachers!!! Your'e right Nick about stats not being important, but theres nothing like a bit of good natured competition

    One Year

I learnt about geocaching from my brother, Tony. It looked interesting so I borrowed a gps from work and did the hour and a half drive to the closest cache. Thankfully gavs coordinates were bang on amongst the gorse and we found it quickly. I soon purchased my own gps and sought more caches. Since then we have hidden a few caches around Nelson, my next task is to get a few others into finding caches. Now we have located most of the close ones we have to venture further afield. Since joining in June this year I have noticed the large number of new cachers, its good to see more using the polls too
  18. Well done, I have saved it as a favourite, far easier to use than buxleys page.
  19. Thanks Brentc for the download advice, it seems to be a user friendly program. I have replaced the offending photo on my dammit cache page. Nick- no more sore neck for you!

  21. yep I know what you mean, the photo had to be taken like that, I just have to figure out how to get it upright. I can rotate it in the camera lcd display but when it goes to f drive it comes out sideways. If all else fails read the manual!!!

  23. I have taken a few snaps today for our caches- rabbit, dammit and bullseye nelson.Easiest found using Buxleys page or my geocaching page. Because of the size restriction I took them in email mode & 640x480 size. Was going to hide another cache but we ran out of time.
