Yes but the show does indeed have a recognizable logo with fingerprint: Very similar to the coin available at geocoinshop.de: http://www.geocoinshop.de/product_info.php...muu257cgj7d9qp2 No coin is worth getting sued over. My inclination would be to get permission. I'm wondering if coins that have been minted that utilize copyrighted images have had permission granted from the legal owners of that image or logo? If not, I'm wondering how the people who actually make the coin get around the legal issue?

Actually use their symbols and slogan:

Ah...that explains it. But I do want answers to my question about copyright. I had asked if the coinmaker had gotten authorization to use the CSI trademark (if it indeed is a trademark - maybe it's not). I have been thinking about a coin based on the Survivor logo but I assume I'd have to have permission from the show's producers. Am I correct in this assumption?

Thank god someone else saw it too. I thought I was losing my mind.

Ok first a disclaimer. I'm preparing for my daughter's b-day party so maybe I'm missing something here but.... Wasn't there a thread here about new coins (CSI and License to Cache) from geocoinshop.de here only a few minutes ago? I had asked a question to the OP about obtaining copyright that I really wanted answered.

Don't you just LOVE it when someone posts a picture?

Great thread. Love these pics. We are relatively new to caching but last week I posted pictures of a coin and TB for the first time, hoping the owners would appreciate it. This thread has inspired me to do more of it. We are getting ready to release about a half dozen trackables soon. I sure hope I get to see where they end up along the way. Much more fun that way. -
Geocaching containers and the environment.

I couldn't agree more with this post. As a public health nurse, this issue is getting some press lately in our local area d/t concerns of toxins from plastics leeching from baby's bottles into the milk - especially with heating. Here is an example of an article written on the subject complete with references used. Agree or disagree with the validity of a cause for concern, one certainly cannot fault the OP for expressing a desire to find out more. http://www.mindfully.org/Plastic/Plasticiz...et-PG5nov03.htm And I also wish to say that as a fairly new convert to geocaching, I'm certainly glad that I wasn't flamed for one of my first questions as the OP here was. It would probably have turned me off to what I thought was supposed to be a FUN thing to do with some nice people who support it and newbies here. Peace -
I love my coins but for some reason when I activated one of them, I didn't get anything but the generic coin icon. Does this coin not have it's own unique icon? I thought I saw one posted on ebay that said it did. Anyone? Anyone? Buehler?

Is this heaven? No, it's geocaching! If we hide it - they will come.

So I've bought my first few coins and had every intention of drilling them and sending them out. But looking at them now...how can I drill holes into them? It feels like defacing a work of art... So before I do the deed I need to ask those of you who have released drilled AND undrilled....does it really make a difference as to the longevity of the coin in your opinion? Have others of you figured out a way to send them out with instructions without having to drill them? I found a coin recently in a cache alone in it's protective holder. Thankfully I knew what it was and what to do. But I can easily see how they get taken inadvertently by people who think they are a part of the swag. Funny how protective I feel all of a sudden.

Many thanks and sorry for asking about a subject that has been beaten to death in the past.... *note to self* "search" is my friend. And my plan after reading the above threads is to buy some lower cost travellers and save the spendy ones for my collection. Thanks again to everyone for the replies.

Hello, I'm new to geocaching and have been falling in love with so many coins....I fear a new expensive hobby.... I've noticed a few cachers take pictures of their beautiful coins, laminate them and send them out into the world while keeping the actual coin with their collection. That way they don't get lost or stolen and people can still log the icon. Is this considered poor form? I'd love to buy some coins from ebay but of course my favorites go for around $30 each. No way I'd want to part with them if I spent that much coin. So...please share your opinion on the subject. Thanks!

Ok thanks for the replies. It makes sense to me now but being new to this I was thinking of it from the TB owner's POV...that being they'd want to know right away that their bug is safe and where it is. I had no idea it would mess up anything to log the find. I just wish the FAQ would note this. It sounds like this happens a lot with new people. If I had previously read that it is customary to wait to log the find of a TB/coin, I would have been more than happy to do so. I do my homework. But after the fact, I received an email telling me I did it wrong. How was I supposed to know? Very frustrating.

I was recently told it's "customary" to wait a week to log a find of a TB or coin. I don't recall reading anything about this in the TB FAQ. What do you all think? I'm new and don't wish to upset anyone. But if this is some sort of rule then shouldn't it be posted in the TB FAQ? Or am I just a dolt who didn't see it posted somewhere?

I am also struggling with this decision. I LOVE the choices you have with coins...some of them are so beautiful. But therein also lies the problem. They are so beautiful that I'm afraid they will be taken. So in that sense, buying some TBs to attach to objects that I like or feel are representative of my family to release seems to make more sense (and cents too). For those of you who attach TBs to toys or other objects, do they tend to stay attached? Is it always a good idea to laminate a card to attach as well that describes the goal of the TB? Do most people release both coins and TBs? I would love to know what the loss average is and also what the average is of travel items to make it to their stated goals....

Hi all, My family is looking to get back into the swing of things again now that our daughter is a bit older and more interested in caching with us. We are essentially newbies who only have 3 finds to our name so far - LoL! But I was wondering if it's considered good form to return to a cache to retrieve TBs or coins to move them? We are lucky enough to have a cache right up the street from our house. We've already logged it as a find and don't want to do that again but we are travelling in a couple of weeks and I would be willing to grab a TB or coin from our neighborhood cache to drop it at a cache near where we will be staying on our little trip. My other question is dependent upon the answer to the first. If it's ok to do this, I assume I should drop a note to the owner of the TB/coin to let them know I'll be dropping it soon. We won't have access to a computer though until we return home. So potentially the drop could be made in the new cache - then before we'd be able to log the drop on-line, someone could come along and move it again. Is this a problem? Is it just better to leave it alone altogether? Thanks in advance for your replies.
