  1. Yeah well, it does make sense when you think about it. He put a new cache there and nobody had found this new cache yet (because he just put it there). So yeah, he needed to delete all previous logs, because after all it's a new cache. I think I'm gonna start doing the same thing! I have a feeling this cacher got a LOT of emails in his inbox in the last 24 hours. Talk about learning a lesson the hard way. Hopefully though, the learnin' will stick.
  2. I agree with this. Many times travelers can be overlooked. I've had notes on my GC page that a coin is MIA only to have a cacher log it out with the next visit days later. I also agree with Kunarion. I don't place travelers into caches where there is a history of missing TBs/coins. I'd like to be able to check the past trackables log and note which travelers went missing from THAT cache to help me choose the safest possible caches for moving coins and bugs. I think it would also be helpful for COs to get a notification when TBs/coins are marked missing from their caches. I've seen some COs actually post a note on their cache page that their cache may not be a safe place for coins and TBs due to prior theft. But overall, I think The Blorenges have a great idea.
  3. ^^^^THIS^^^^ Thank you Eartha.
  4. Ok, I noticed someone else had reinstated their found log. So I reinstated my DNF log. I also notified the reviewer who wrote back that he's having a dialogue with the CO. The more I checked into the CO, I'm convinced he's a teen who made a wrong decision but nothing with malicious intent.
  5. That's why in my OP, I said I'd be most unhappy if it were a find of mine he deleted.
  6. Yes, WSGA looked at it, that was my first thought. But again, we don't have $4000 or so for the current lot of 1476, or anywhere to store that many (seriously, that's a LOT of cans, 2-3 times as many as cachers have bought in previous auctions). If other caching orgs in Oregon, Idaho, or BC want to partner with us (say, 500 cans each), and can pay and pick up theirs in the time frame required by Ft Lewis if we win the auction, I'm game. Each org would need to be willing to pony up to $2000 depending on the auction prices and how many orgs take part. I'm happy to pass the word along to GEOregon with a link to this thread.
  7. This isn't a newbie cacher. Over 600 finds and 20 caches placed. A run through the gallery shows a young-looking guy, probably a teen cacher. I'm hoping it was just a misjudgment on his part. I'm tempted to try and repost my DNF (even though it is sort of lame to worry about a DNF ) but I don't want to get into any kind of problem with him because I've logged several of his caches and really don't want those finds deleted too.
  8. I've just had something happen to me that has never happened before. I've had a DNF log deleted. Obviously, it really doesn't matter stats-wise or otherwise to me. But get this...this cache apparently had been missing and there was a note placed on the cache page by a reviewer on 10/31/11. The canned message, "It looks like your cache has been under the weather for some time. While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for you and block other cachers from entering the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time, we can't do so forever. Please either repair/replace this cache in the next couple of weeks, or archive it so that someone else can place a cache in the area, and cachers can once again enjoy visiting this location." So today the CO enables the cache with a note, "All fixed!" but seems to have literally deleted every log (EVERY log) except the original "published" and the reviewer's note. I can't remember how many finds were on that cache but...this doesn't seem right. And if it was a find of mine vs a DNF that this CO deleted, I'd be most unhappy and probably be sending a note to TPTB about having it reinstated. And yes, I have sent a message to the CO and am awaiting a reply. I am hesitating to post the GC number until I give them time to respond. But has this ever happened to anyone else? Is there any legitimate reason why a CO would want to do this?
  9. Maybe some of the bigger geocaching organizations would be willing to get together for a buy and then distribute them - possibly as a fund-raiser for their groups - to NW cachers everywhere. Still at very reasonable prices. I bet loads of folks would buy a few if the prices were good.
  10. Will there be a civil suit I wonder? Mayhap the teen will soon be the owner of a plot of land.
  11. I'm reluctant to post this but, aside from the money aspect, in all honesty, I could not continue promoting the sweat-shop labor employed at the factories where many coins are minted. I'm not saying they are all like that. But once I discovered the process of how they are made and what the employees do to earn a very limited income, it made me feel bad that a project I wanted would subject other human beings to those kind of working conditions. And again, I don't know about all of the factories and how they operate. I know that I was hoping to get my coins made as cheaply (though as beautifully) as possible. That probably meant going with a factory that didn't pay their workers very well. Please, to my fellow coin lovers, this is in NO way a judgment on anyone else's decision to mint coins. I'm just saying it is a big reason why coins are less attractive to me at this point. And if anyone has information that I am wrong about this, I'd LOVE to hear it.
  12. Absolutely this would be a Found It. It was a Found It even before he brought the container home. But he can't log a Hid It until it is back in place. I'm not disagreeing with you. I'm simply playing devil's advocate. If the cache was laying on the ground and not in the true hiding spot, was it a legitimate find? Again, I would say yes and as a CO I would of course allow the find, no problem. But technically....and since this CO has tricky hides that the OP has struggled with finding....it wasn't a true find in the sense that it wasn't in the correct hiding spot. The difficulty of the find had been inadvertently changed, in other words, for the OP. Again, I'm not saying it is in any way wrong to log the find. I'm suggesting that some people on this board, may argue otherwise based on past threads I've read. Of course he found it. It was "lost", by deductive reasoning, he "found" it. What was once lost, is now found.... EDIT TO ADD: Sorry, the devil made me do it LoL - Now I have Amazing Grace stuck in my head.

  14. So is that a "found it" log then? (I'm just anticipating the drama this question might unleash.) Frankly, I'd be logging a smiley on it. You went above and beyond what most people would do. I think it deserves a smiley just for that alone.
  15. As it is cold and flu season and frankly I don't know how often you all bathe so can I just rub elbows with you all? Sorry, occupational hazard.
  16. As bad as it may feel to be a new cacher who gets DNFs, just wait until you are a well-seasoned cacher and you get DNFs. So embarrassing...but it is always good to keep humble. At least that is what I tell myself. Keep having fun. Don't sweat the DNFs. It is all part of the game.
  17. I think you were just trying to be conscientious, if I were the CO I wouldn't be upset provided you'd take it back to where you found it on the outside chance that was the hiding spot. But if the cache was improperly placed, I'd be happy you have it for me to put back correctly. I'm sure that others will have a different take but that is how I would see it.
  18. Doesn't it feel great when a traveler actually achieves its goal? Way cool. One of mine finally got back to Ireland (its goal) after getting there about a year ago, only to be taken back out again after visiting only 1 cache! The cacher didn't read the goal and got home and felt terrible about what he'd done. But even with the detour, goal achieved! Yay!! BTW, this thread will likely be moved to the Travel Bug section so IBTM.
  19. This is a pretty good suggestion. I would add, 3 months after the most recent of 3 Found It logs were posted. That would help to protect TBs in rarely found caches. At least. I have coins out with specific goals to be taken to obscure caches far off the beaten path. I've traveled to some AMAZING caches this way. But that often means my coin is in a cache for 6 months - once it was a whole year - before it gets seen by anyone. At least give me, the TO, the option to have a longer period of inactivity before an automated dump. Then I'd be all for this idea.
  20. If I had a magic wand, I'd wish that people would simply log trackables in and out of caches in a timely manner. That would cut down on a LOT of confusion. I can't tell you how many times I've gotten apologetic emails, "So sorry! Forgot we had your coin until we picked up our caching bag and discovered we hadn't logged it. We'll get it placed soon." Most of the time, this is from long time cachers with thousands of finds. I get logging can be tedious but....
  21. No fair. We only get 1 IBTL per thread and I already blew mine. I need to brush up on my IBTL rule book. Do we only get 1 per thread or 1 per person per thread? 1 per person per thread. But we better get back to asking EXMAN if he's found that inventory list maintenance clause before Keystone slaps our hands for going off topic. My bad. On both counts. Sorry in advance Keystone. I had thought Eartha would have made an appearance in this thread by now. He/she has an impressive knowledge of travelers and could quite likely reassure the OP that any missing travelers he comes across can be dealt with by official volunteers. IF they have been verified to be MIA after a cache has been visted by the person bearing the request of course.

  23. oh, but i fully intend to go through ALL of your caches. and if any of the listed trackablesare missing........ i do fully intend to place a note on your page. And if I were Knowschad I would contact Groundspeak and report you for abusing the logging tools and provide them a link to your post. So would I.
  24. Volunteers like you? When did you become a volunteer? i'm volunteering here, right now, in this thread. and you? LoL - is that what you call it? GC.com appoints the volunteers. Without their blessing, you can't really claim to be any kind of legitimate volunteer. And as GeoBain, I believe, already pointed out...you've pretty much blown that from happening with this thread. The only thing left to be said is IBTL.
