  1. Thanks for the suggestions...I'll probably try them once more with a couple more pairs of fresh eyes along and if we can't find it then...I'll ask for a hint....luckily the more recent two DNFs are very accessible so trying again is no problem. The funny thing is that the 3rd one was marked the most difficult of the 3 and we found that one no problem. I'm wondering now if I marked the one I found after a hint correctly. I marked it as "found" but I don't know if that erased my original DNF post?? I'll go check on that.
  2. Hi, I'm new to this hobby and have found 5 out of 11 caches so far. I think the snow may have kept me from finding one or two of them but anyway, the 5 which I found weren't very difficult, I found them within maybe 10 minutes of reaching the coordinates. My question is: If you search high and low, even with couple other people for a at least 20 to 30 minutes and still can't find the cache, is it ok to ask the owner for an additional hint or should I just give up on it gracefully and move onto the next one?! (In the last cases of the ones I couldn't find others had found it within the past month so I'm assuming it's still a valid cache). I had one owner contact me on the first one I couldn't find with an additional clue and it worked...I found it right away my next shot, but I didn't know if I could/should ask on other caches as well....it's really bothering me that I couldn't find them!! grrrr!!
  3. Hi, I am a newbie and had the same question but I ended up going with the PN-40 although I was hesitant because of the comments that it's hard to use. I am not technically savvy but was able to use it literally within minutes. I took me 10 minutes tops to load the regional maps and then I loaded the topo 8 maps onto my computer which took about 30 minutes. I haven't gotten as far as putting the topo/aerial maps on my unit because I was in a hurry to get outside...but I'll let you know how that goes, I'll probably do it this weekend. Anyway, I used it my first day out, very easy to use! I went outside and quickly found a bunch of satellites, came back inside, plugged the gps into the computer, selected "data transfer", logged onto this site and searched my zipcode for caches and when I found ones I wanted I simply hit "send to gps" and I was out the door. I came onto this site today and found out what pocket queries were....now I will be able to load large groups of caches without having to do them one by one....(I figured there must have been a way to do it.) Have fun with whatever one you decide to get. A few of the deciding factors for me were price...PN-40 on Amazon for $199, the maps were included and I can get unlimited maps for $30 a year (less if purchased through amazon I think), paperless caching is super....all of the coordinates, hints, people's comments, etc. were right there for me to read when I was looking for the container. Plus, I can see on my map little icons that represent other caches in the vicinity....(ones that I sent to my gps). The screen was bright, clear and it appears to be very sturdily made. I can't wait to utilize it to it's fullest. I bought an expensive Garmin car GPS for a trip to Europe and it broke after just a few weeks....I haven't gotten around to having it repaired yet so I can't comment on their customer service...anyway that also swayed me toward giving DeLorme a shot.
  4. Hi, I have ordered my 1st GPS as a Christmas present from my husband to me. I ordered the PN-40 on Amazon for $199 I just hope I'm tech savvy enough to figure out how to use it!! I'm sure I'll be back on here in a few weeks looking for help. I can't wait to find my first geocache!!
  5. I'm in the same boat as you and haven't decided yet... I was eyeing an Earthmate PN-40 for $334 at Walmart with a $50 DeLorme rebate, but I haven't decided if I want to spend that much money. I've never geocached before and was thinking of trying to find an old eTrex on ebay first to try it out.....I'm still thinking....hmmmm...
  6. I did a quick check, the lowest price I can find on the 60 csx is $299

  8. Hi. I originally saw the rebate on cabelas website but their retail price is much higher. Walmart now is $334 and the rebate is through Delorme itself. The Ireland thing isn't really that important, I was just going there on vacation and thought it would be handy for talking country walks. My main interest is in starting geocaching in my area. In doing some more research (I'm slightly afraid the DeLorme might be too complicated for me based on some reviews). I see that tigergps has a special on the discontinued eTrex Venture CX with a New England topo map included in the bundle for $169. It mentions this model is discontinued which worried me though....is it outdated or was there a problem with them??? I'm going to look more into the 60 CSX but would I then have to spend an additional $100 or so for the maps (bringing it up to the PN-40 price) or is the basemap sufficient for geocaching as it's shipped? (DeLorme told me no, there was no Ireland map available that I'd only see possibly major roadways.)

  10. Hi. I'm new here and was doing some research as to which GPS to buy. I have no recommendations as I've never owned a GPS but in my research I see that there's a rebate that starts tomorrow (when purchased through certain sellers). $20 for the PN-20 and $50 for the PN-40 (which Walmart now has for $328 before rebate). I see many posts that say the Garmin CSX and DeLorme PN-40 are both pretty savvy devices and with the rebate are about the same price point, but I'm a novice so I might just go for something less intimidating....any advise if I want to spend about $150 or less? Question: would any of the units have maps available for rural Ireland? When I called DeLorme to confirm that the rebate was good if the unit was purchased at Walmart they said there's only comes with USA maps. Thanks. Maureen
