  1. All the debate happened before I knew anything about geocaching, so I have no axe to grind one way or the other. Mr Lovelock clearly behaved in a way which the vast majority found unacceptable, and he has been duely excluded. By breaching the Standards/Rules/Guidelines I think he can have little complaint. However I am uncomfortable with what amounts to excessive censorship at even the mention of his name. For several months I was completely puzzled by various postings and the way they were dealt with, threads being locked, messages edited etc. Hopefully Timp posting a selection of threads will help to clarify it for people. I suggest that you leave these links in an accesable place, so other newcomers to the forum can find out what all this refers to.
  2. Congratulations, and really quickly too. At that rate you should reach 200 before I make 100! Best wishes Mark
  3. We would be up for it, could help if you need it. December or January seem a good idea. Mark & family
  4. Brilliant, upto 300, you have been an inspiration to me and the family, and I'm left in awe at the rate you complete them. The whole family have had great fun doing the caches you set. Good luck, 500 is in sight I feel. Best wishes Mark & family
  5. The place in 'The Brooks' is Hawkins Bazaar see also http://www.hawkin.com However if you go up to the Intech centre on Morn Hill, they have a shop that sells exactly the type you describe for about a £1 or a combined compass/thermometer keyring at a similar price. Conedxf
  6. We might be up for it as well, I can just imagine a great shot of the family laughing as I hurtle down a chalky railway enbankment, face first I can even imagine the interview with Mrs dxf where she happily recounts how I did that last time as well. What do you think ? Mark
  7. Roads and Recreation and Metroguide use the same version of the Mapsource program, the basic difference between them is that Metroguide maps contain informatiion that allows autorouting e.g. your GPS if suitable, or your PC can automatically calculate the route on roads between 2 points. R&R Maps cannot. You can download Metroguide maps to your GPS without the routeing information, which then makes them the same size the R&R ones. The decision about which to buy depends on your model of GPS, If your GPS doesn't support Autorouting, theres little point in my opinion in buying Metroguide. Mark
  8. The alternative to locking the box is to mimic what Tim & June have achieved with Quantum Leap 1, don't want to be too specific, but do the cache and you will see what I mean. Mark
  9. 1. from a personal point of view Saturday would be better, as junior football is Sundays and likley to interfere 2. Depends on the distance apart/difficulty, specially given the shortness of the day. 3. early darkness suggests lunchtime meet I suspect. also unavailable weekend of 16/17 November as I'm in Wales for RallyGB
  10. Just wanted to say a public Thank You to Team Tate for organising todays event, which was excellent. We had a really good time, and from the conversation afterwoods, so did everyone else. Thanks again Mark and family
  11. Yes I had noticed, and did find it annoying. It seems silly to log a find against your own cache
  12. Before you do any codeing I strongly recommend that you download Chris's spreadsheet from http://www.sheps.clara.net/SSVersions.html Chris's spreadsheet not only converts into multiple formats, it also contains autolinks to various Uk mapping sites includeing Streetmap and the OS. I usually use the streetmap link, as it produces an extract of Landranger map with the location marked.
  13. South Coast, could be fun, depending on the date/time I'm up for that. Mark
  14. 1)More reinforcement of previous learning, when searching a given area, the absence of the normal, or the presence of the abnormal indicate something hidden. This has proved to be so true in seeking the hiding places of caches. Observation of the ground has certainly sharpened greatly. 2)The quickest route between two points is rarely the straightest. 3)Children and prickly bushes rarely mix well Mark and family

  18. The only bug present in the cache is the one I dropped off earlier today, which is the TEXAS Racing Spoon. There are various nic nacsin the cache as well.
  19. Chris, have sent you photos for Facing saints and viaduct view, all pictures were taken on the evening of May 31st
  20. We tend to cache as a family, and for the kids the excitement is in the finding of the cache. Part of that excitement is not knowing what will be inside. Contents is subjective, what some consider is cr*p may well be treasured by a 6 year old. The kids always swap things of approximate value, and for sparse caches, we tend to leave and not take. Another part of the fun for them is monitoring a cache having left something, to see who takes it.
  21. Our first cache was Facing Saints on a really beautiful summers evening. As the sun set over St. Cross where Matthew was christened, the view was stunning, after that how could we not continue

  23. I use the excellent spreadsheet from chris, which does the conversion, and contains a quicklink to either OS or better still streetmap.co.uk. Streetmap then produces you a decent section of OS map with the location at the centre. Details of how to obtain Chris's spreadsheet at http://www.sheps.clara.net/
  24. Since I was trotting around a wood in Stevenage looking for a cache in the rain, I'd definatly say caching comes first
