  1. Should be Archived is a last resort, and should only be used when ther is direct evidence that the cache is gone or destroyed, and the owner can not be contacted. Of course a SBA would also be appropriate if you found that the cache was obviously placed against guidlines. The ratings for difficulty are so arbitrary, and open to personal interpretation. One cachers "1" is anothers "2" or "3". Terrain ratings are also not cut and dry. Taken literally a "1-1" should be able to be found by a person in a wheelchair almost immediately, and would probably be muggled before it was approved. We all know of caches we would rate differently, but that does not make them candidates for SBA. The OP followed the proper procedure and contacted the owner.......take his word for it, and log a DNF, if all the logs are DNFs then folks will ignore the cache in the future. Thanks for all the Adventures
  2. I will bump this one every few weeks, or when it gets too far down the list. just want to keep it visible Thanks for the Many Adventures
  3. THe correct date is the 12th, and not the 7th as was in the title to this thread. I stand corrected, or should I bow to PRW and Treasure Hunting Family A new thread with a corrected title has been started please post there PS how do I close or lock this thread???? Thanks for the interest Gary of Gary and Mary
  4. The date and location for the Spring Picnic in Indiana has been finalized. Potato Creek State Park near North Liberty, Indiana will be the location, and May 12, 2007 will be the date. The Quaking Aspen Shelter has been reserved, and coordinates will be posted on the Event page as the date nears. We are working with the local DNR to make sure that this event will be good for the park, as well as good for geocachers in the region. Volunteers to help with the planning and organizing WILL NOT be discouraged, so let us know if you would like to help. Mark this date on your calendar, and be prepared for a day of fun with fellow cachers. Hope to see lots of folks there from all of Indiana, as well as the surrounding states (or anywhere if you are willing to travel)

  6. Remember that when the sport was new, all of the hiders were nubies, and none of them had lots of finds under their belt. And this activity has grown, and grown. Many of the experienced hiders place the proverbial WalMart parking lot caches. For those people that like those caches that is great. I have no problem with micros, or any kind of cache. Locally I might try a puzzle cache, or a several stage multi. My favorite caches have been the traditional hide in the woods with trinkets to trade, but will search for a micro if it is nearby. We spend too much time complaining about parking lot caches, and argueing over whether a cacher should be able to have multiple logs for an event where you hunt for multiple (well hidden) caches. We could be out walking the woods (or the parking lots if that is your style) to find new Adventures Enjoy the sport/activity and stop complaining about inconsequential little matters IMHO Thanks for the Adventures Gary

  8. Gary and Mary Adventurers along with (probably) The Happy Hikers have reserved site #23 for Friday and Saturday nights. We are looking forward to another great time at a fall event.
  9. Sorry, I just noticed in the Indigo thread, that the picnic is listed. I was expecting it to be showing up in "events past and present" in Indiana Have TPTB changed that feature to only show a mont or so in advance???? But here is the link from that thread http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...d8-d1ec236a1f9e
  10. The Adventurers are planning on attending. We might also be bringing along the Happy Hikers. Any idea when the Event will be listed?????
  11. Again, since the cache is owned by the person that hid it, and he chooses to have it be a MO cache, then ......Sorry, you are out of luck..... The owner can choose to have the cache be what he wants. It is a benefit of being a premium member to be able to find and log MO caches. To "cheat" and log a find in a different manner, is unfair to all the folks that have decided to pay and support this great site. If you want to log it, pay for at least one months membership, and log it during that month. That would be fair to all concerned.
  12. FTF is insignificant anyways, but I think the person should not brag about it. But, the cache owner does have the right to give the coords out prior to being published, so when and how the log is recorded is up to the cache owner. They can always edit or disallow the log (But I doubt they would since they released the coords early)
  13. At the events I have attended (Annual spring and fall picnics in Indiana) most of the "event" caches have been very well done, and more difficult to find than the typical urban WalMart parking lot cache. So.... for that type of event cache logging, I have to say YES Pocket Caches (they are not a real cache type anyways) NO Daily records are meaningless unless you know what type of caches .....So for the last 2 questions NO or who gives a Sh*t
  14. A very good point. I recently got my new Garmin GPSMap 76 Cx, and have been really impreessed with it's performance. I can take it inside and still retain lock on sats, and have even been able to get a lock in my basement (one story ranch) I have owned an eTrex, a garmin GPS12 (wife still uses it),a Mag SportTrak, a recently stolen Garmin GPS V and GPS Map 76, so can compare the 76 Cx to those at least The 76 Cx by far has better reception than any of those others. I know that many Mag owners swear by them, but I could not get used to the lag time that mine had. (I have been told that it is common with most Mags) I have been in heavy cover where other units are losing their locks, and my 76 Cx keeps it. That is my experience, and I hope it can help
  15. Well, I am one of those that jumped when I saw the rebate for the 76Cx. My MAP 76 was stolen over the weekend, and I was contemplating getting a 60Cx since it was a bit cheaper. I actually like the form factor of the 76 better, but was going to get the 60 since it was a bit cheaper, with little difference other than the (almost cheap as dirt) memory card size. But with the $100.00 rebate, and a $434.00 price from Amazo.com ($334.00 net price). I was able to get my cake and eat it too. I got my 76Cx yesterday, and am already in love with it. The almost instant acquisition (15-20 seconds out of the box, and 2-5 seconds in my car) is great, and I took it into my office after it acquired, and it stayed in lock where I could never before. I can not wait to get out in the woods and see how well it works in heavy cover.
  16. I'm guessing they are selling the North America City Select NT or North America City Navigator NT on these cards. NT map compatibility was added to the 60CSx/60Cx with the 2.62 beta release. Its also available in the 2.7 official release as well as the new 2.71 beta. I currently have all of North America City Navigator NT v7 installed on my 60CSx on a 1GB card - it takes up 888MB of space. For TOPO SD cards Garmin is selling 12 overlapping regions for the US alone. Canada is also divide up into overlapping regions. FYI I have been working with my CD version of TOPO, and have figured out that I can get the entire Continental US onto 4- 1 GB cards. Lets see 4 from Amazon.com @ $42.00 or 12 from Garmin @ $86.00 DUHH
  17. I was just working with my TOPO set, and I figure it will take 4 SD card to have the entire 48 continental US loaded on them. The US East has 2565 maps using only 658 MB, and the US West has 5187 using 1.509 GB If it was not for the 2025 limit, you could get it all on 2 cards
  18. On Garmin's website you can download the lates software version for MapSource TOPO (It is the same for all MapSource versions). So you can get the latest "software" for free and use it with the maps which might be as old as the hills (Hmmm the hills are what we need) I just downloaded the latest version (6.10.2) and it works fine with my CDs which say version 3.02 on them. I am going to load the maps onto micro SD cards and have the entire TOPO US for my use by simply changing my CD card in my GPSMap 76Cx So far I have most of the Great Lakes region loaded onto the 128 MB card that came with my unit (brand new yesterday, and I love Garmin's x series)
  19. I purchased a Kensington Port replicator with my new Dell computer, and when I connected it, I noticed that it had assigned com5 to my serial port. I changed it to com1 using device manager. I had read somewhere that com1 seems to work best. GSAK, MapSource and other software had no problems finding my GPSr then. A extra note of caution------- My port replicator told me to always plug it into the same USB port, otherwise your computer will assign different com numbers
  20. Since you are a premium member, the most useful way would be to run a Pocket Query, and use GSAK to view the query. Then you would also have the ability to load the coords directly into your GPSr by using GSAK Barring that, you can simply click on file in internet explorer, and "save as" an HTML file. which can then be viewed offline at any time Good Luck
  21. I am completely bewildered by the way some of the users (customers) think that they deserve to have PQs and other features work exactly like they want. Have you ever tried to go to McDonalds and ask for a gallon of Coke. They might give you 4 32 oz ones, but will probably be too confused to know how to deal with it. Have you ever gone to Sears and asked for a 65 in lawnmower....you wont get it Have you ever gone to Best Buy and asked for a 288 in TV ... you wont get it. Why do so many users think they should get everything they ask for here. I applaud Jeremy for a job well done with only a portion of users paying for the services he gives us. C'mon folks lets use the tools we have and go on from there. Sure put requests into a wish list, but lets not continue bit**ing about minor issues when we could be out finding caches. GOOD JOB Jeremy Thanks for the Adventurers Gary and Mary
  22. This week I was caching is south central Tennessee, close to the Alabama border, and came across a cache called "The Mighty Cock" . The term is used to name a giant chicken that is in front of a gas station. What made it more interesting was that 2 buildings down the street, was a gentlemens club called the Boo*ie Bungalow, and across the interstate was an adult bookstore. The cache name took on different meanings in the light of those businesses. Also the closest cache in Alabama was called " a short visit to the House of Many Pleasures" The HMP was a floral shop in that town, but my thoughts turned to something different (Me Bad)
