  1. This has gone back and forth with TPTB as well as people on the forums. The first couple of events We attended, TPTB suggested one log for the event regardless of how many caches were available to find. Later Geocaching.com recommended that the event hosts allow people to do multiple logs. (the belief being that TPTB had heard many requests that this be done) The last year or so, after the abbusive practice of pocket caches, TPTB (after reading many complaints on the forums) went back to suggesting one log per event. I personally have followed the recommendations of the event host. Many of the caches we have found at events are much, much harder to find that the typical urban park and grab. Numbers mean very little, 1000 urban P&Gs might not involve as much effort as 10 or 20 caches that involve hiking or other activities in TRUE outdoors. An event in a rugged state park with 5 or 10 well placed caches is a lot more work than the urban P&Gs I refer to. If the event host says log these caches, then feel free to do it if you like. I am not ashamed of the multiple logs I have done at some events, in fact they mean a lot more to me than the typical WalMart parking lot cache (I have found, and have logged some of them too) Enjoy the caches you do, and log or don't log (it is up to you and the cache owner) Thanks for the Adventures
  2. We just received a donation of a Garmin GPS 72. So we will be raffling that off along with other items to be announced
  3. I love my 76Cx. I prefer an old-fashioned magnetic compass, so the S series was not on my list. With a regular compas, if my batteries go, and I forgot to bring replacements, at least I still know my directions. My 76 was stolen, and since I thought the 76 was great, the 76Cx was a natural choice, and I am glad I made that choice!!
  4. I just wanted to apoligize to anyone who might have been bothered about our suggestion that people bring a non-perishable food item to be donated to a local food pantry. The picnic is intended as a fun, family get together, and not in any way as a fundraiser for any organization. The idea of donating food to a local food pantry was an afterthought, and was not intended to circumvent any prohibition on soliciting. We were notified by TPTB that we were not following the guidlines, and have removed all of the referrences about this. Again, I offer my apology for this mistake.
  5. 501 Gang, Several teams have volunteered so far, by emailing through the Picnic web page. But we do need additional suckers volunteers. Gary and Mary
  6. Polished rocks are a great trading item. The only suggestion I would have is for you to put them in one of the small snack baggies with a sheet telling what type of rock or mineral it is. A lot of folks would appreciate it more if they knew the significance. IMHO But your other activities are great too, I wish more of us had your attitude. Enjoy the Adventures
  7. Whatever you decide to call it, we enjoy it. Fishermen, and hunters are called "Sportsmen". Yes there are competetive fishing tournaments, but most fishermen dont participate in those. Hiking and bicycling are commonly referred to as sports. I go caching when I hike, when I bike, when I kayak, so it is definately a recreational activity. My favorite and I think, the term that best describes it is like stated earlier RASH R. ecreational A. ctivity S. port H. obby Just have fun and enjoy it
  8. The 2007 Spring Picnic in Indiana will be having an Amazing GEO-Race during the picnic. We will be limiting the number of players to 12 teams of 2. This competition is not intended to be the main emphasis of our event, just a little fun for the players and entertainment for the rest of the Event Attendees. All the details have not been worked out yet, but we will probably have 3 or 4 legs eliminating teams as we go along. The specific tasks will in some way be related to caching. When a task is completed the players will be given coordinates, and will have to retreive a maker, and proceed to the "Pit Stop" area. The first so many from each leg will go on to the next one. At our fall picnics for the last several years we have had competions like this based on "Survivor". so we wanted to try something a little different. You don't have to be from Indiana to attend, all are welcome and compete. The waypoint for the event is GC10NQ8
  9. "GEO-coins" have not always been used as TBs, and whoever left it may have just wanted it to be a trading item. IndyDiver in Indiana is a perfect example. He had personal geocoins made, and left them in caches that he considered better than most. His coins, and coins from other such cachers were considered collectors items, and cachers hurried to a cache with them to recover the limited edition coins. I am one of those collectors, and am proud to own one. Also I purchased a small ammount of the "Green Man" GEOcoin, and gave them as prizes for one of our spring picnics, as well as putting them in a couple of caches as FTF prizes. If you want to activate it, and put it back into circulation, or if you just want to put it back as a regular trading item, or you could keep it as a collectors item yourself. The choice is up to you. Have fun
  10. against generally accepted practices? These generally accepted practices seem to have been "accepted" by those that feel numbers really mean something. Personnaly, I have attended events where we were given sheets or info to find several caches, and each of those caches were harder to find than the typical "WalMart Parking lot micro" cache. At some of the events they told us to log each cache as a find, and at other events they told us not to. I would not log multis more than once, but I have added a log when the owner had additional coordinates listed in the first container that led to a second hide that was just as good. To me the numbers are a way for me to record my own accomplishments, I dont compare my finds to other cachers, because I dont know if 90% of their finds are "WalMart micros. A cacher with a couple hundred finds that all involve long hikes through tough terrain could very easily be prouder of his finds than a fellow cacher with several thousand drive-up micros. The cool part of this activity is that everyone can enjoy it in whatever manner they prefer. Let's not force TPTB to change that and cause people to quit because the changed rules spoil their enjoyment. Enjoy the Adventure, don't sweat over the way other people play.
  11. On the picnic web page we annnounced that there will be an "Amazing GEO-Race" at the picnic. We are looking for 12 teams of 2 to participate. If you are interested Email us or the owner of the Picnic event. It should be fun (at least for the audience). Come on to the Adventure Gary and Mary
  12. We got some more on the cache page. Can we add it here too?
  13. You are welcome anytime MC We are looking forward to seeing you in May!!!
  14. Many of us Hoosiers in the TOP half of the state have been for DA Bears since long before the Colts made their Midnite Ride from Baltimore. But it is nice for us to be able to support an Indiana team in the AFC and still remain Bears fans in the NFC. So we are lucky to have it that whoever wins the Superbowl we can still PARTY!!!
  15. GC10NQ8 2007 Indiana Spring Picnic web page has been published. Check it out. The page is a work in progress, and details will be added as they are finalized. Keep checking it so that you are kept up to date. We are looking forward to a fun event with Geocachers from all over Indiana and the general region Come on over for the Adventure Gary and Mary
  16. The cache page has been submitted for approval, and should be up in its starting version very shortly. As is usual it will be a work in progress, so once it is up please check it now and then for updates. Gary and Mary
  17. I thought I would start a new thread here to give people a place to list the campsite they will be using for The Spring Picnic. Potato Creek Family Electric Section E is the unofficial camping area for the event. All of the sites at Potato Creek are Water/Electric site, except for the youth tent area. Gary and Mary Adventurers will be sharing sites 286 and 260 with the Happy Hikers Let us know when you make your reservations
  18. Campsite Reservations The Adventurers, and Happy Hikers will be camping Friday and Saturday evenings, and staying in section E of the Family Electric sites. We reserved sites 286 and 260 (Next to each other on a corner) and will be using one of them as a "Meet and Greet" crackerbarrel site. As of Today the section had almost all the sites available, so if geocachers reserve early, we can have the section pretty much to ourselves. This section is set off a little and is at the end of the line so it will be a good "Event Headquarters" Looking forward to seeing everyone in May Come on up for the Adventure Gary and Mary
  19. Holy Smoke!!!! It's almost February, and the Spring Picnic is only a little over 3 months away. Up here in Northern Indiana the weather has not seemed like winter, until this weekend, so we have been a little distracted. Some of us met at a local watering hole this weekend, and talked about picnic plans, as well as other things. Look for the web page to be showing up early next month, and we plan on finalizing our camping reservations this week. The shelter has been reserved for months though, so watch this thread for announcements till the web page goes up. Hope you are having some great winter Adventures. Garu and Mary
  20. Depending on the unit, and the topo software that you have it can be done. But you can also get a mapping GPS and see your route displayed right over the topo on the unit.
  21. GSAK has the GPSBabel code built into it, and also allows you to create your own cache names using various attributes. Such as difficulty or container size etc. And of course it has capabilty of using the cache name itself instead of the GC # I use GSAK to load my GPS, I use the GC # but also send the name where it is shown in the waypoint description on my Garmin 76 and my new 76Cx I barely touch the surface of GSAKs features, but still find it the easiest and best way to load my GPS, and feel it was worth the price (which is optional)
