    thanks for the response.

while you were typing this, I came across the following from Ranz:

"...Magellan Mapsend is the only application that will load maps to a Magellan GPS. Garmin Mapsource is the only application that will load maps to a Garmin GPS. I am not really familiar with Lawrence but I assume that the same applies...."

sorry for the confusion. I'll contact the Easy/ExpertGPS people regarding Meri. product compatibility...

  3. http://www.offroute.com/comparisons/gps-compare.html

some of the 'notable' features at the bottom a missing a few in the Magellan's (like the tides/fishing-hunting/moon-sun stuff) but it's a goood starting point.

I'm also torn betweenthe Vista and the Meri-Plat (as my recent 3 posts show)....

Pros for the Meri-Plat that I've found (please correct/ammend):

-the antenna (vis a vis the eTrex),

    -the SD cards,

    -the 'more detailed' stock database,

-using 'all' trackpoints to make a route (the eTrex's [all Garmins?] use some, which means you might 'cut corners' when retracing and run aground, etc),

    -actual barometer display,

-"3-d" e-compass (supposedly, the Vista has to be held flat [parallel to the ground], whereas the MeriPlat does not),

-proximity alarm (only to the last waypoint)

-when driving, with the Magellan add-on maps, it'll show 'next intersection' like the upper-in-car-Garmins

    Pros for the Vista:

-~26 more datums than the Meri's

    -smaller

-more resolution in screen (although 'smaller')

-altimeter goest to 30k' (MeriPlat to 17.5k')

    -50 waypoints per route/track (Meri's only 30 per)

-external antennae (i've read NO IT DOESN'T in other posts, but the REI guy I spoke to today has a Legend and swears he puts his in his pocket and has an external antennae velcro'd to the top of his pack. He showed me the connection point at the top/back area for the ant.)

-i've read it's compass (if you keep it level) is more accurate than the Meri's

-larger user base for the Garmins

... I'm blanking on the rest.

Both can be found online for $289, and both have a 1 year warr.

It's my first, like your bro's, so I'm not tied to the user-interface/menu/brand loyalty...

I'm still undecided, but leaning towards the Meri.Plat.

Some new and very exspensive units allow you to load TOPO maps ...

which are the 'units' you speak of?

    thanks,

  7. Point#1: good question, I dont know,but I want to know.

    Point#2: (re: the Meridian Gold)

"...Map memory is optional and available up to 64 megs. Note: In our MapSend Streets, it is possible to upload 4 map "areas" and each "area" can be a max of 16 megs. Thus, to fully load a 64meg memory, the user must select 4 different areas even if the areas are directly adjacent. Magellan says later updates of MapSend will allow a single upload of up to 64 megs....."

the article is over a year old, though (http://www.gpsinformation.net/mgoldreview/mag-gold.htm)

anyone know if the firmware/software 'updates' are online from Magellan???

  9. hi, i'm in the market for my first GPSr, and I've narrowed the search to the Garmin Vista, V, 76s; Mag.Mer.Gold/Plat (don't worry, i won't ask which is *best* icon_wink.gif

But I'm confused about which maps can be imported into the Magellan GPSr's listed above. (one of my criteria)

According to this page (http://www.offroute.com/comparisons/gps-compare.html) the Meridians' "Downloadable Map Options" are the "MapSend CD-Roms" (from Magellan) but no mention of others....

And according to this page (http://www.gpsinformation.net/mgoldreview/mag-gold.htm)

    "...Third-Party Software Compatibility

This version of the [Meridian] GOLD can exchange and store data with OziExplorer, Street Atlas (SA) 8 and 9, Delorme TOPO, MapSend, and possibly others...."

Anyone know if the Easy/ExpertGPS s.w. will work with the Meridian Units? What about other topo stuff you've used?

(I'm interested in it for caching and codifying all the hiking we've been/are doing)

  11. is the Vista still available? is the warranty card blank? is the receipt included?

I can get from a dealer for $289 no shipping, so $275 is too high for a private party sale.... please email with final offer on unit with cig.charger and, if avail, topo maps of VA/WV

    thanks,
