In 2018 I found a cache that was inside a business:
I have to admit that it was kinda weird that I was roped in to the shop to get the cache.
In my early days I wanted to hide a cache near a restaurant I liked, as an homage to the restaurant. The reviewer rejected it for having an agenda. Seems fair. I support the rule that caches do not have an agenda.

Are there any opportunities for a meaningful virtual there that is publicly accessible without the need for express permission? It's really a historical spot and it would be a shame if you had to give up on it due to government bureaucracy.
There's no way to get anywhere near the B reactor on your own. Maybe in the reach just above it and you could look across the river... Haven't tried it. I've also considered putting the virtual in the reach anyway. If this DOE doesn't go anywhere I may scout that out.
I've gone back and forth on this. I'm not asking the tour-goers to do anything different than what they're expected to do on the tour anyway, not in the slightest. I could place the virtual and no one would be the wiser. But I could see some kind of worst-case scenario where someone asks the tour people something about the virtual, and one thing leads to another and someone becomes concerned. We are supposed to ask for permission, so I'm trying my best.

Oh, government...!
I called again today and they're still trying to check with the DOE!
I've offered to contact that person directly so I can explain the situation in my own words. They'll "get back to me" on that.

During the tour you mention, is there a guide giving you information along the way, or is it one of those self-paced tours? I ask because as a visitor, and cacher, I would have to split my attention between the guide and getting answers for your Virtual.
It's both. There is ample time given for self-directed exploration so it works out pretty nicely, I think.

I used my virtual as motivation to go places I'd intended to, but hadn't made the effort.
Yes, the Hanford B Reactor tour is exactly this. It's a free tour of a facility that's really critical to the history of our area, and the tour is really very well done, but a lot of people still haven't done it.
I'm hoping to talk to the DOE person tomorrow, so fingers crossed! Meantime, what do you guys think about these logging questions? I'm not really sure of the year-to-year longevity of the #1 requirement, and if it changes (or the others) then the questions could get dropped, or I'll have to go on another tour and come up with more questions!
1. In the large Front Face Room, to the left there is a large diorama of the facility, with red buttons to light up the different areas. How many red buttons are there on this display?
2. In the Valve Pit Room, there's a Safety News bulletin on the wall. How many safe hours are announced on this bulletin?
3. In the Control Room, there's an old calendar on the wall. It says "Hanford Project" on the top of the calendar. What is the latest month/year on the calendar, down in the bottom right corner?
4. If you go back past the Exhaust & Intake Fans, you'll find a mural painted on the wall. It says, "I need you on the job... Full time" at the top. Here you see mention of HEW--what does HEW stand for?
Finally, one last request to help prove you were there:
5. Please include in your log a photo of your favorite room. ( But please don't include a photo that gives away answers to the above questions )

Thanks for all the thoughtful replies. I am taking Joe_L's advice to heart and sleeping on it a bit. And I've been looking more into Moun10Bike's suggestion of the Hanford B Reactor and that's actually a fantastic suggestion. So I went on the tour and it was really good. I think it would make a great virtual. I have it all written up but when I asked the tour people for permission they really balked at the idea. "We'll have to ask our Department of Energy liaison." Ouch. I haven't heard back yet. It may be a lost cause. I'm going to try to call them today and see if I can talk to that DOE person directly.

Speaking of Hanford Reach, what about the B Reactor at Hanford?
https://manhattanprojectbreactor.hanford.gov/Yep, should probably be considered, I haven't been out there either...
Looks like my next free day is filling up with things to do.

Hanford Reach National Monument looks like an interesting place. I guessing it's about 1 hour from you?
Full disclosure, I haven’t been up there! I’ll add it to the list of potential out-of-town spots, seems like it could be a strong candidate, thanks for the suggestion!- 1

I don't think that would be allowed for a virtual
Oh whoops! Thanks for the heads up. Maybe someday I’ll make a multi that incorporates that if I really want to go for it. A sort of “geocaching ironman” perhaps.

My virtual cache is in the middle of the pedestrian portion of a bridge
I considered this! We have multiple bridges that span the rivers where I live. But it seemed a bit too similar to the pre-existing virtual. Nice idea though. And thanks for sharing your reasoning. -
Hey everyone,
I was lucky enough to receive a virtual 3.0 award. I've been very excited to cook up an idea but I've been having a lot of self-doubt that my ideas are "not good enough". I'm hoping to bounce my ideas off you all and get some feedback.
I live in a town that, in my opinion, doesn't have anything too remarkable and I wouldn't be very satisfied putting the virtual on a local sightseeing object, the options are just not interesting enough in my mind. We do have 1 other virtual placed in the town that's pretty well done as an epic multi-waypoint adventure that highlights the riverfront. We also have a ton of adventure labs in our area.
I've considered driving out of town to put it at some sightseeing spot where I know it'll get reasonable traffic, like at a waterfall, for instance. I have several waterfall options. They all already have Earthcaches at those spots so kind of already are highlighted with a virtual cache of sorts. And also, I'm not exactly at my most creative by just slapping this on a waterfall.
Another idea, which I've completely written up and at this point could publish with the click of a button, is a sort of book club cache, set at the local library, where you are encouraged to tell us your favorite book in your log, or else the most recent book you read and whether you would recommend it (there is a location-based question as well). I think this one is nice and simple, elegant in its way, a bit different and fun if people cooperate (I don't think I'm allowed to require people to make the book recommendations in their log). But then I'm second-guessing myself that it's just kind of basic and maybe not a good use of a virtual reward, as the same thing could be constructed as a traditional cache. Once I realized that, the idea soured pretty hard for me.
I have considered making an underwater cache for a long time, as I do love the river here. I haven't done it because the river is strong and somewhat dangerous if you're not a good swimmer, so it would really not be accessible to a lot of people. A virtual would have that same problem, though the setup would now be a lot easier (just sink an object with a code written on it, something like that). I'm starting to think this would be a reasonable use of the virtual reward because it solves a lot of the maintenance and logistics problems, but again, not very accessible to a lot of people and also potentially dangerous. But I have to admit it would be appealing to make a virtual that's a little "different" than the typical fare.
Probably my best bet is to keep thinking about a good enough sightseeing spot out of town that I'd have to travel to, that's the "safest" plan. But what are some opinions on some of the other ideas?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts on this. I just want to thoroughly consider my options before pulling the trigger!

I live in a medium size community and at 1000 finds (many of which were found while traveling) I've already depleted the local cache pool, and not that many new ones get published. So yeah, I feel you OP. But I still look forward to doing some geocaching whenever I go somewhere new. Earlier this year I went to the San Juan islands (Washington state USA) and got quite a few caches while I was there. I'm not going to be getting any impressive day-after-day streaks, but geocaching is still something I'm involved in, even when I can't grab one at home just any ol' time I want to.
-
I have several caches on islands, terrain rating 5. I like them! I made sure to get the proper permissions, but that doesn't sound like a problem for your island!
They don't get a lot of traffic though. Not that I was expecting a lot. But don't be surprised if your cache is only rarely found (not sure how many avid canoers/etc are in your area).

Alright I found it. I think I was at a disadvantage for trying this on my mobile device.

I looked through all the raw images taken by WATSON and SHERLOC and couldn’t figure it out. Tried some of the number sequences I saw but they were not correct. Now I feel like a dummy

Garmin Express only loads caches when using the "Send to Garmin" feature from the website, whether on individual cache pages or sending a list.
I will argue with you that mine was doing something different. I would delete Geocache1.gpx from the Garmin device, and then on geocaching.com I would send “some geocache list” to garmin, it would open in Garmin express and download and give me a green status “all finished”, then I would eject the Garmin and observe that “Geocache1” was still loaded on the device, and also “some geocache list” was NOT loaded on the device. Once I had successfully deleted “geocache1” from the device as described above, and then separately sending in the list, did it work. Smells like a bug in the Garmin express software, if you ask me, but I’m no expert. -

Connect to PC.
Look at device like you would any thumb drive or other external device.
Peek into the Garmin/GPX folder. If there are *.gpx files there, then there will still be caches on your device.
Nuke *.gpx files, caches go away.
Load a new *.gpx file(s) and those caches will appear (I'd just copy them directly to your device, Garmin Express unnecessary for this task).
Yes, this process seems straightforward but WAS NOT working when I had Garmin express open (attempted 3 times). It worked when I did not use Garmin express.

I've never used Garmin Express to load caches, but have you made sure the folder the files load from is empty before setting up a new load? I've seen that in GSAK where someone doesn't delete the old files and keeps getting them loaded with new files.
Yes, I wanted to look into this but I’m not tech savvy enough to figure out how. The user interface for Garmin express is extremely bare bones. For now I got things set up how I want for my trip and I’m calling it good. -
Okay it was some kind of Garmin Express problem. It was somehow resetting old downloads instead of the new one that I wanted. But by deleting the GPX files off my Garmin (GPX folder, not GGZ as their website says) with the Garmin Express NOT RUNNING, and making sure to eject the Garmin from the computer, I was able to make the deletion stick. Then I was able to download my new geocaches as normal. Thanks for any who took a look here and gave it some thought.

I think I've narrowed the problem to Garmin Express program, it's doing unusual things. I closed that completely and deleted the files off the Garmin, and now they're gone! I'm just concerned that if I try to load any geocaches back onto my Garmin, it's going to reload the OLD ones and not the ones I want... Only one way to find out...

A simple search on google with a few from these forums as well.
Yep, how quaint.
First problem there is that there is no "GGZ folder" anywhere. Yes my software is up to date. Okay well there is a "GPX" folder and it contains files with names of geocaching lists and stuff I've downloaded. I delete those and then eject the Garmin and then when I plug it back in, the files are still there!! I've done it 3 times now... Also can't seem to get new ones onto the Garmin, using Garmin express it says they've successfully downloaded, but they're clearly not on the Garmin.
Maybe it's a device-specific problem? Time to chuck it in the river...?

I can't believe I couldn't figure this out with internet searching, but here I am. How do I delete geocaches off of my etrex 30x???

I have also found a WalMart parking lot hide that wasn't associated with a lamp post. It was very creatively done! GC6WV0R

If I get a TB in the field I may log it right away so that I can have it visit further caches that I go to, and perhaps drop it in another cache before I even go home. That's if I'm logging in the field, which I don't always do, but sometimes yeah. If I see the TB was physically but not digitally in the cache I wouldn't really think twice about it, it's really common. Everyone knows that TB logging is a big mess.
If I were the one that hadn't had a chance to log it yet, I'd just shrug it off. No big deal. I would understand the above situation.
Now if I were expected to have to write down the logging notes and keep track of this thing just because someone else didn't log it *yet* (and based off of past experiences, who knows when/if they ever will) then that is what is truly irksome. So now I can't visit it to other caches that day, unless I log it later as "write a note"? Now I have to carefully keep notes on where I put it, if I put it in another cache? No thanks.

How To Retrieve Lost Activation Code
in Trackables

I just found a travel bug that I got a while ago and forgot about, one of the clear plastic ones that sticks onto a car windshield. I have no idea how to find the activation code. Any hints?
