  1. Another tidbit, but cachers also use to keep a cache page to "place" their geocoins so that they don't stay in your current inventory. Some of us have 100+ geocoins, so having them "sit" in an unactive cache listing is an asset. I know its off topic, but just shows there is another use for an un-activated cache
  2. No, with v3.10 when switching over to the compass while heading for a cache, the needle will stay in position and not move. The feet will decrease / increase, but the needle stays put. If I turn off Auto and go back to compass, then back to settings and turn it back on, when I then go back to compass, it works. Never had this problem with 2.48 (I know, it took awhile for me to update)
  3. Did the issue of the Auto compass not pointing in the right direction get fixed? I turned my Auto off, but haven't had much chance to test it yet. I would prefer it to be on...
  4. Well, if you were visiting Nova Scotia, Canada near scenic Annapolis Royal is my all time favourite: GC1AW39 Hippy House cache History mixed with an extremely unique deserted house. Check out the gallery shots!
  5. I had emailed GC.com, and they suggested that I put forth this idea and see what the general caching community thought of my idea. They said the developers keep an eye on this forum. Idea: When deleting entries from a cache page, it would be nice to have the ability to leave a comment as to why it was deleted so that when the individual receives his email (I'm presuming they get an email) informing him that a log was deleted, he would find out immediately the reason. ie duplicate entry or did not fulfill the requirements etc. Instead of 2 things to do 1) delete entry 2) email individual to explain why (cuz a nice cache owner would), it would be much simpler if it could be streamlined into the one function. Comments?
  6. I thought so, but was hoping... I do like to see the cache names on my screen, not the GCwp as it isn't very descriptive. Oh, well, will keep doing what I've always been doing Thanx for clarifying!
  7. RS67Man - did you use the gpx file that you exported from GSAK? or the copy / paste method? Just curious as maybe I am missing a step / filter / code with gsak (that I would correct... )
  8. I have deleted a couple of logs over the past few years. All were because of a duplicate entry. I think it would be nice that when a cache owner does delete a log, there should be an area to leave a comment as to why, that is included in the notification. I normally email the individual and inform them, that duplicates add to the cache count which isn't a true representation of their finds. No one has complained yet...
  9. I have found, that if you export your gpx file to your garmin, the field notes upload option will not work. If I download a PQ and copy / paste it to the garmin, I am then able to use the field notes. I think its how the caches are labeled by the both gsak and gc.com Local caching is no big deal, so I use gsak. I tend to remember the caches I found that day with out having to look at my "found list" on the gps. If I plan on going on vacation far away, and know that I won't be able to log my caches the same day, then I use the PQ, so that I can upload the field notes when I have time, and don't have to scroll thru my "found" caches to log each one individually. Field notes are extremely handy for me when I need it
  10. The two methods I use are: 1) GSAK and export to the Garmin Oregon (which won't allow you to upload your field notes) 2) copy / paste your gpx file directly to your garmin thru Explorer. This allows you to upload your field notes after you have cached.
  11. I also now have a brick It was also having issues connecting thru the usb to the pc - tried 3 pcs - finally had a stable connection, so "went for it" as some of the upgrades may have helped... wrong thing to do. Tried the web updater, and it got stuck on "Validating: 0% complete"... now it won't even turn on! Tried the last ditch attempt as mentioned in previous logs without any luck. Will be phoning Canada Garmin warranty service tomorrow. Hope they are quick with the repair / replacing!
  12. I had the same thing happen to me! After waiting a week or so, I then sent an email to the owner. Still no response, so I "grabbed" it with a polite, "Sorry, and hope you don't mind, but I found it and have since placed it in a new cache". I also logged it into the cache I found it in for the mileage, and then retrieved / dropped it into its new home. TB owner has never replied, so at least in my mind, I did the proper thing Ya can only do what ya can! If the owner doesn't care enough to remember to log it in the cache, then, its on the onus of the next cacher to correct the problem. We all look after each other and our precious TB's
  13. Think I found the answer to my previous question No, I didn't realize I could do this feature, as it stated it was for the Colorado.... I will check it out
  14. If I delete that file (It did have the caches in the file), will the Oregon naturally re-create the file, or should I just delete the text within the file and resave it? I've loaded a 1000 cache gpx file onto my Oregon, with no problems. Thanx for the feedback, I appreciate any and all comments!!!
  15. Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this anomaly. When I load caches from GSAK to my Oregon 300, I always seem to have some caches listed in my "Found" listing, that I haven't yet been to. It always marks 3 or 4. I can easily "Go" to them, and then mark them as "Unattempted", but its just down right annoying! GSAK definitely see's them as "Not Found"... Haven't tried loading a pocket query straight into the Oregon to check if it does the same thing, as I like to load more than the 200 max.
  16. I read that it would hold only 200 gpx files.... If thats correct, don't download your caches one at a time Use GSAK or a pocket query!
  17. One thought that ran thru my mind when reading about "unplugging" the oregon, at which point it is frozen is that: did you just literally "unplug" the usb, and did you "Safely Remove Hardware" from the little icon in the lower right part of your taskbar on the pc? Many devices need to be "safely removed" to prevent problems. It was just a thought, if it helps you, good! If not, I guess I don't have the answer
  18. I don't think gloves would be a major problem for navigating using the large icons. The display is very sensitive. When editting coords, the icons are much smaller, so that would be when gloves would make it more difficult. After geocaching quite often this past week, I only editted coords during one multi, so the majority of my use was with the main "larger" icons. So gloves should be another mute point. But time will tell
  19. Have had mine since last Thurs, and have been out caching with it almost every day since. Going from the Magellan 500 and a PDA to the Oregon, is a dream come true. I loaded the topo maps onto the memory card, so I can also use the autoroute capability. This a pure fun! You can watch on a map, or go more detailed, and it tells you how many minutes / seconds to the next turn! It is extremely easy to switch from the geocaching profile to the automotive profile. I moved the menu buttons around to better suit what I use. I liked that with geocaching I could set the profile to miles / feet, and the automotive profile to kilometers / meters. (I'm in Canada, eh) The profiles keep the settings separate which is nice. As for finding the geocaches, I get best results using the electronic compass when close, and so far, the gps has been very close to actual cache location. Much better than the 30 ft out with my magellan! Today, I had to use the edit waypoint function while doing a multi, and that is the first item, that I don't really like. The coords are at the top, and don't seem to scroll very well. Maybe I am not doing something right, will play with it some more... its actually a mute point, as its seldom that I have to edit a waypoint. The display, as most folks mention in the forum is dim outside. I don't find it so low that it is impossible to read, as I normally cut the lighting down anyway on my Magellan. It is low, but still useable. I am still running the 2.2 software, with no problems as of yet, will wait until updates get settled and reliable. I did take the Oregon out caching on the bicycle, and had it bumped around a few times against the handlebars before I got smart and shortened my lanyard. No damage to the screen so I believe it is robust. The fingerprints from using the screen easily clean off with eyeglass cloth. Another small point that I like and is maybe a normal Garmin thing, but the geocaches and parking icons etc are different vs the magellan (all waypoints were treasure chests). So far, I like the little features and have no complaints, just fun
  20. I have both the topo Canada and USA, and am considering the City navigator software for my Garmin Oregon. Both topo's mesh together nicely when downloaded thru Mapsource onto the memory stick. Would the addition of the City Navigator also mesh seemlessly with the topo? I presume it uses mapsource as well ? The city navigator would give more details in urban areas for the autorouting feature, so figure it would be a nice thing to have onboard... who knows when I would need to find a Timmies
  21. Since spring, I have no longer been getting dropped / retrieve email notices for my travel bugs. When is this going to get fixed???????
  22. Well, I'm hoping its the Garmin Oregon, cuz I have mine on the way from GPS City. Geocaching and the Autoroute are what I am buying it for... and no more PDA... here's hoping I don't get disappointed!
  23. I dearly love my Magellan 500... but... I am on my second unit - first one wouldn't work in cold weather and kept locking up until I warmed it up (not good in Canada) This second one locks up on me every once in awhile (in warm weather), and I have to remove / replace the battery to get it working again - sometimes I have to re-enable my maps, sometimes not. Its rather annoying, and due to Magellan warranty is now questionable in Canada, I will probably head for a Garmin shortly. The only thing holding me back (for a Garmin) is that the topo maps for Magellan have way more detail down to the street level. Caching with my husband, I can get us right to the exact street (by name) and his trusty Lowrance will zero in to the cache far better, almost every time! Too bad I can't get good maps for his 15 yr old Lowrance, LOL So for now, I will continue to use my annoying Magellan 500, but am "actively seeking" a better replacement
  24. Yes, my daily pocket query hasn't run since Wed
