  1. Gotta go along with this, in fact, its kinda the embodiment of the adage "A few harmless flakes can unleash an avalanche of destruction." Although it does seem that "harmless" doesn't apply to many govt entities. And yes, I deal with a very large govt entity almost daily...its inability to act rationally on even the most mundane of issues is a constant source of amazement.
  2. A local cacher/hiker provided this link to a policy discussed/drafted at the May business meeting of the ATC: http://www.appalachiantrail.org/atf/cf/%7B...hing_Policy.pdf
  3. At least one Virginia cache got axed as well: Henry's cache, GCZEHC. "I have a bad feeling about this..."
  4. Similar to the attached wire, we've seen some folks glue a short piece of a toothpick to one end of the log, making it a bit easier to roll it. Works for nanos as well as vial and centrifuge tube logs. Have also seen folks place logs for those slightly bigger containers inside a piece of plastic soda straw - cut the straw slightly shorter than the log to make it easy to remove (Hardee's straws work well!). And for making nano logs, a chaep straight-cut shredder works wonders. Print lines extending perpendicular to the feed direction on a piece of paper, feed it to the shredder and you get a bunch of nano logs ready for use.
  5. Ok, I'm confused...who is talking here?
  6. Absolutely! We were at a gun show not long ago, and a knife vendor there had a large tub of hemostats priced at $1 each - beats the Wally World fishing versions at $4.95! Had straight and curved, varying jaw lengths as well as overall lengths. Got several pair (have lost a pair or two over time, so it seemed like a reasoable investment). They make quick work of nano logs, blood centrifuge tube logs, and various other bothersome tasks.
  7. How ever the coin ends up, I would be in for a few. Hubby is an old trekkie and I would love to have some.
  8. He-doxie usually carries .357/.38 Spl, HP loads. She-doxie has NA .22 mag most all time, and occasionally a .32 Walther. TN carry permit allows either open or concealed.
  9. Bristol TN/VA 5 miles: 269 10 miles: 525 25 miles: 1690 50 miles: 3197
  10. Reached a state where blood pressure was the only thing being escalated, so took the escalator to another floor where they actually sold a functioning unit AND could find their posterior parts without it.
  11. Glad we didn't read these threads before making our first hide...or we probably would have never made one. For a newbie (OK, for at least some newbies), the steep slope of attitude might make the ascent to the temple of knowledge...not attractive.
  12. Gotta agree with this as well. Used some stats for a while until realizing that they were for others' purposes, not our own...so ditched em. Just like our feeling on Wherigo...those that want it can support, but don't transfer/require any of that support from those who don't. Well then if Dave brings his site back as a pay-to-use site you won't have a problem not using it and not paying, now will you? I like the maps, I like being a premium member on GC.com. Wouldn't mind paying for the INATN to get the maps. Jim I would agree with you wholeheartedly. If the INATN comes up as a free site, pay-for-play or whatever, all who wish to use it are good to go in my book. My objection would be if gc.com took it on and utilized or increased membership dues there, as was suggested in a portion I did not quote above (and to which I believe Cardinal Red was replying to as well). Methinks you may have missed the mark a bit with this replay. I would encourage you to pay for the INATN maps if you so deisre...just don't require me to do the same.
  13. Absolutely hits the bulls-eye! Or at least give us the ability to turn off both our number being visible to others, and our own ability to see others numbers.

  15. Sitting at home on your asterisk? Or, have some fun and go out geocaching. Funny how attempts at being so pure and utterly agenda-free seem to just suck a whole lot of the enjoyment out of it...kinda get tired lookin over my shoulder, wonderin when the PC police will knock at my door. Most zealously pursued attempts to avoid any and all agendas (or, whatever else trips your PC-ish trigger point) end up similarly...kinda like the scene from "Red October"..."You arrogant *******! You've killed us!" Yet, let commercialistic creep continue...but I guess that's survival agenda, thus OK?
  16. When carrying, one doxie caries a NAA minirevolver, usually in a pocket. The other has a Glock P23, either in back-waistband or tactical-style side holster. Before we obtained carry permits, we encountered a strangely-acting possum while checking on a cache of our ours during broad daylight. Was a rather unnerving experience. Made us think...think hard.
  17. We've had good luck with MS S&T, and downloading waypoints to it via GSAK. We just run filters for the desired caches, export them thru GSAK as a .csv, and the use the import wizard to pull them onto a map in S&T. You can then search them by name in S&T, set a route to one or more, and you are on your way.
  18. Once again, Magellan proves that it is possible for a GPS manufacturer to not be able to find their own posterior with a road map...or a GPS.
  19. Wow - What a beautiful coin! Congratulations Jim!
  20. On one hand, was really sorry to get that email, in that it signals the moving on of one of the real "good guys" in this game...and one of those who strove to keep the game simple, full of fun more than anything else. Truly he will be missed by many, and the game will be none the better for his departure. On the other hand, it will be good to know that he now has the time and opportunity to play the game the way he wants, unencumbered by the limitations that must go along with his former responsibilities. We had the pleasure of caching with him on one delightful occasion...memorable it was, and one of our favorite experiences ever associated with this game. Thanks Max. You taught us a lot about this game...hopefully, we'll reflect it in all we do. You've been a real blessing to this game, and to us. Hope to see you on the trail again soon.
