Garmin GPS V's reception under tree cover
Night Stalker replied to JC9000's topic in GPS technology and devices
I have a Magellan Sportrak and my brother-in-law has a GPS V. When we are caching in heavily forested areas he loses coverage sooner than I do. This is not necessarily bad because even though my GPS still has coverage it seems to give false information because the signal is so poor. Neither of us has really had any problems except when we were in really heavily forested areas. -
Sportrac Pro and Maptech Terrain Navigator Questions
Night Stalker replied to chuska's topic in GPS technology and devices
I have a sportrak pro and to date have had really good luck with it. As far as mounting it on a motorcycle I would think you would want some kind of insulation from the vibration to keep it happy. As far as I know Mapsend is the only software that will work with Magellan products. I have the Mapsend Topo software and have been fairly pleased with it. It does not seem quite as accurate as the Garmin software as far as identifying position. It shows my house about 140' west of the actual location, but the fact that it shows my street at all is a surprise. It also compresses better than the Garmin software so you can get larger and more maps on your GPS -
I have the Magellan Sportrak and my brother-in-law has the Garmin V. We checked speed with both and they were right on. I suspect that the speedometers are off not the GPS.

Sportrak Opening screen
Night Stalker replied to Night Stalker's topic in GPS technology and devices
just tried to access the sight listed. couldn't get it to open. Does anyone know if it has been moved or if there is another location that would have the software? Thanks -

Nice GPS personalization tool

I just purchased a Sportrak Pro and would surely like to change my intro screen as well. Has anyone tried this on this model, and if so what is the process? Thanks -

SporTrak Pro, got one, got questions
Night Stalker replied to user13371's topic in GPS technology and devices
I just got a Sportrak Pro and I believe the manual tells you how to change your setup so that it is land based. I think it is the same map but changes the way it is viewed. By the way there is downloadable software for your Sportrak that will add 2 more screens and add some fixes. Check out the Magellan sight. -
Is Mapsend software as horrible as the reviews say?
Night Stalker replied to Boof's topic in GPS technology and devices
I was having the same questions you have about a week ago. I eventually bought the Sportrak and the Mapsend Topo software. My brother-in-law has the Garmin GPS V. We went Geo Caching together this weekend so we had plenty of time to compare. His software might be a little more accurate, though that would be hard to prove. The one thing I can say for certain is that the compression ratio on the Mapsend is greater so you can put larger maps into the Sportrak. With that said I can't see how you could go wrong with either one. By the way my Sportrak held a signal a little better in trees then the GPS V. -
There is plenty of software out there to make copies including one available on the internet called CloneCD which will break the copy protection on most programs. Again this is only for your use and not to be distributed to anyone else. Some licenses state that you may only have 1 copy running at a time, but you should always make a copy in case something happens to the original. If you dont know what I mean, you obviously dont have children.

Don't know why, but when I created a waypoint for my home it was 140' west of the actual location in mapsend. I drove around today and the downloaded map was right on while I was driving down the freeway. There only seem to be 2 satellites with good reception at my home and there were as many as 7 active satellites when I was geo caching so that might have made the difference.

Just bought a sportrak pro. the opening screen requires you to agree that you will take responsibility for using the device. If you do not agree within 10 seconds it shuts down. Is there anyway to eliminate this stupid and agrivating screen or substitute something else. I know someone that was able substitute another screen on his GPS V with personal information. Please it is driving me crazy already and I've only had it for 1 day!!!!!!

Just wanted to say thanks for the information. It really helped me make my decision.

I've been told that auto-averaging is a real pain when you are geo-caching. Is there a way to turn it off on the Magellan sportrak. Would appreciate any comments by users of the Magellan as to how much of a pain it really is.

Saw GPS V at Walmart yersterday for $400.00. You know they will let you return it if there is a problem. The drawback is that you may not find one at every walmart. The best price I've found is on Amazon.com

I am looking at buying a magellan sportrak pro, but wondered if anyone had used the topo software for this unit and how it compares to the Mapsource software.
