  1. Had the samwe problem today, couldn't think what is was, then I looked down stairs to the family room. There was my son on Xbox live playing a game. Looked in the basement and there were 2 of his friends on additional machines playing the same game. No wonder I couldn't get anything to open.
  2. The one I remember doing told the searcher the elevation as well as the coordinates.
  3. Another option is to purchase a Pocket PC and install GPXview which is freeware. This allows you to put a copy of the GPX file onto the Pocket PC as well as your GPS. This allows you to view the complete cache info including clue and the last 5 logs. You can find pocket PC's on ebay for fairly reasonable prices now that evryone has everything on the phones. The are other pieces of software that will do more that GPXview, such as GSAK, but they are not free and some have a fairly high learning curve.
  4. So has anyone seen or tested oone of the new units. I noticed that the 60CSX at Sportsmans Warehouse is now $209.00 If worst comes to worst I can upgrade my well worn 60CX to an excellent 60CSX.
  5. Look around and buy the most GPS you can afford. I say this because I bought a lower end GPS to begin with. I have since upgrade 3 times. If I had started out with the high end GPS I could have saved a lot of money. I am using a 60CX which does everything I need it to do. It would be nice to have one of the new touch screen Garmins since they also store all the cache information, but my PDA does that so I will keep some of my money and waste it on something else.
  6. I use a fanny pack with bottle holders on each side. In one I carry the Pocket PC, and in the other I carry some water. This is for shorter runs. I have a large camelbak for those longer hikes. Since most caches don't seem to have much worth trading for anymore it isn't as big a deal to carry a lot of swag.
  7. My first try with my GPS said 0 right at the cache. That was 8 years ago, and I can't remember this happening since. I thought at the time that this caching thing was going to be easy. I have since revised that thought many times. The farthest away from zero I found a cache was a little over half a mile. I found this cache only because a previous searcher actually found this cache by the clues and left corrected coordinates in his log. I would have given up long before I had hiked that much further without his updated information.
  8. My computer came with both the 64 bit and 32 bit versions of windows explorer, so whenever I have issues with the newer version I just open the older version and work in their. I am surprised that all computers using windows 7 aren't configured this way.
  9. I believe the latest firmware update increased the size of the file to 4 GB, but not all the micro SD cards will work at the 4 GB. the segments are still restricted to the 2025, but with the newer software the segments are larger so this is not as much of a problem. I believe you can now easily load the entire us City Navigator and still have room for some topo maps.
  10. I'm no expert, but I did take the H & R Block class on tax law. Your wife can take a tax deduction for travel to and from the homes outside her office. I guess if you ride along and jump out when you are near a cache that could be counted, but I don't think taking detours for your caching adventures is going to count. Sorry. The IRS has no sense of humor.
  11. I am one owner that can attest to the advantage of having the 60CSX over the 76. Mine came loose from its belt clip and bounced down a hill into a large river in the chicago area. Since it did not float I was able to see the nice bright waterproof screen and the bottom of the river, and was able to retrieve it. As far as paperless is concerned. I have a used Ipaq 3955 that carries all the cache information. This unit has done everything I have needed for several years. It may not be quite as handy as having everything in one unit, but I have a holster on each side of my belt so it isn't that big a deal.
  12. I am using filedepot topo maps on my 60CX and find them to be excellent, but I have noticed that the new 1:24k maps that Garmin is selling by area also include auto routing. This may be a feature that will make them more worth while for your use. I use auto routing with my GPS all the time while caching. It makes it a lot easier and quicker to find the closest jump off spot better then 90% of the time. Saves a lot of gas also.
  13. I bought a Compac pocket PC a few years ago. It was the Ipac 3955. Since it came from the factory with Excel and Word I can use it for more then just goecaching. It will also sync up to my email, but I am afraid that mostly I installed a bunch of games on mine for those times at work when I really didn't want to work.
  14. If you are talking about the basemaps that come with the etrex, they are not very valuable. If you purchase maps then you would probably purchase the city navigator maps or the top maps. Older Garmin topo maps would probably transfer between the units because the maps them themselves would be loaded on you computer and could be downloaded to the untis. The older topo maps do not need a license for each unit. City navigator does. I would also suspect that your older unit would not be able to use the city navigator maps properly even if they could be downloaded and you were willing to pay the price for the additional licenses. I would think that the etrex would be a lot hardier for the type of use that you would be putting it to and a lot cheaper to replace if it were broken while caching. If it is like my 60 CX the etrex is waterproof. I doubt that the Iphone is. I accidentally dropped my 60 CX in a river and it survived. Don't try that with your phone.
  15. I don't know if you are having the same problem I had recently, but I was getting error messages stating that my downloads were corrupted, or sometimes would save invalid signature. Turned out my router was corrupting all downloaded files. Took me sometime before I figured that one out. In fact I had to take my computer over to another house and try the same downloades before I found the problem.
  16. When you create a pocket query make sure that you mark the day of the week you want your query sent to you. You would be surprised how many people forget to do tyhat when they first create a query... Be careful that you don't mark to many options. Some of them when marked at the same time will be contradictory and therefore you wont get anything at all.
  17. Find cachers in your area and cache with them a few times to get more familiar with what to look for. Remember that your GPS will only get you close, and sometimes not that close. You can figure on being within 20 feet of the cache most of the time, but if there is tree cover, or if the cache hider is using an older GPS, or if the hider makes an error and reverses a couple of number it can be a lot further away. You should read the cache page and read the last few logs. This can help you a lot in finding a cache. Stay away from micro caches until you have some more experience.
  18. The caches that I have found with the available in winter symbol were ones that had been hidden in such a way that the cache could be found as easily in the winter as in the summer. Most were hidden high enough that snow was not a factor. I disable several of my caches during winter months because I do not feel they are in an area or hidden in such a way that they can be found in the winter.
  19. Since your Nuvi is a road type GPS I don't know if you can use it for paperless caching. I have a Garmin 60CX which also does not lend itself to paperless caching, but all is not lost. Purchase and older PDA or in my case a pocket PC. You can load the caching information on either one. It is not as convenient as having everything in one spot, but it is sure a lot nicer than carrying around a clipboard with cache pages printed out on them, like I did when I first started caching.
  20. I have seen this before when a disc was badly scratched, but it sounds like you have new discs so don't know what would be the problem. If you know someone with a computer try the discs on the other computer to see if you have the same issues.
  21. If you can hook up withy some established cachers in your area you will learn a lot about how to look for a cache and your boy will have a lot more fun. Good Luck
  22. The big difference between the 60CSX and the 60CX is that the 60CX does not have a digital compass or a barometer. I use the 60CX and except for starting out when it needs to find itself it is as good as the 60CSX. To get the best use out of it you may need to buy some maps. I am using City Navigator. I did not buy it for geocaching, but to find my way around all the places I was sent for work. It was after I got it installed that I found out it is a lifesaver when geocaching also. It will take you to the closest road to a cache. 99% of the time that is where you want to park. It saves time and gas money. I am using Filedepots free topo maps and they are every bit as good as the older version of Garmin Topo that I was using. For paperless I bought an older Ipaq 3955 and load the cache pages on that.
  23. There was one in Salt Lake City that had a combination you had to get off the billboard to which it was attached. If you were a non cacher and did not read the cache page you would never know where to look.
  24. I have had excellent luck with the free maps from gpsfiledepot, but I also use City Navigator for auto routing which saves a lot of gas and time trying to get to the parking area. I believe I have payed for that software many times over from the gas I have saved.
  25. I am using the Garmin OEM version on my bike. It took some adjusting at first to get the correct angle to see it in most lighting conditions, but once that was done it has worked like a champ. I would be concerned about the 3" arm extending my GPS into harms way. It's hard enough riding and watching the GPS to keep out of trouble.
