  1. Shannon informed me today that the upcoming war has taken precedence over a modest geocaching story . I can't imagine a world in which geocaching is not foremost in the public's mind! Maybe she'll want to do it this summer. I guess I'll hold a special cache in reserve just for her. Then again, maybe not!
  2. If you have to ask me, you wouldn't believe me when I told you.
  3. I pick May 16, the Friday before a busy weekend.
  4. I recently found an image of this Nextel phone with an integrated GPS receiver. Has anyone else seen or used one of these units? I know the phone capability but have no clue how accurate the GPSr might be or the functions that are present. I'm already trying to convince my purchasing department that this is an essential piece of equipment!
  5. We are not amused. We are scheduled for an interview, however. I'll be sure to tell her how poorly planned your Walk in the Park was! BTW, I don't carry spare ammo cans - too heavy. It's much easier to carry a film cannister: "Wow, who knew there was a micro hidden out here? These things are incredibly hard to find!"
  6. I received this message today; you probably did, too. Any cachers in the Orlando area should call her - I already have. Film at 11. ---------------- My name is Shannon Hori, I'm a reporter at WESH-TV ...the NBC affiliate in Orlando, Florida. I'm very interested in doing a story on this hobby ...can you please have someone in the Orlando area give me a call so that we can follow someone as they hunt the caches. Thanks so much! 7. I agree that locationless caches should have their own arena. The question before us relates only to the approval process being bogged down by volume. I find that locationless caches open my eyes to things around me that I might not have otherwise noticed, yellow jeeps notwithstanding. I will continue to seek them.
  8. As you well know, my usual attire may not have gone over well on a "family" show! We don't want to scare everyone off.
  9. The reporter tried to look like he was using it but he didn't really do anything except zoom in and out. Good thing the camera didn't show the screen. He might have been able to find the cache on his own but he lucked out by having the Hammack offspring spot it for him!
  10. Freelens, I was already a star before this program! But the real stars were Team Hammack. It was fun to see the boys in action. I bet they are like bloodhounds when they get on the scent of Tupperware. And Mitchell didn't even mind getting hit in the head with the cache container! I don't know if they aired that segment. We're already making arrangements for an appearance on Good Morning America. Call my agent.
  11. Intermittent fire is a natural occurence, especially in the southeast. A good land manager will try to mimic the natural schedule. The site managers for many of our local caches will notify the owners prior to the fire, move the cache out of the way during the fire, and replace it after the fire. This assumes that the cache was placed with permission. If you place caches without permission you should not be disappointed when they vanish.
  12. I wonder why he is bypassing the admin review? Judging from his record, Zephyrus seems to be more of a hider than a finder. He needs to be told directly that people have a large problem with his decision to do this. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and presume he isn't aware yet. I will also contact him and direct him to this thread.
  13. After translating my username for the Where's in a Name cache, my latitude coordinates are N 25* 44.636. This puts the cache location somewhere in the Coral Gables area. If you can help me out, please let me know. I'm in Orlando and would be happy to help anyone who needs a central Florida location. Thanks.
  14. I know this has probably been discussed - feel free to Markwell me. When I originally wrote the descriptions for several of my caches, I did not include any HTML links or extras. Now, I want to add the Canadian geocoins link. I find that when I add the link and check the box indicating that I am providing the HTML, I lose all the formatting in the cache description - sentences run together, paragraph breaks and tabs are lost, etc. How do I correct this? I know that the admin folks say they do some formatting when the cache is first posted. I am totally HTML illiterate.
  15. I'll never understand why people pride themselves on large reptile collections. How big are the tupperware containers you keep them? Most are shoe-box sized. Pretty much sucks if you live in one. I don't buy the argument of keeping them for breeding. Who do you sell to? More people who like to keep reptiles in tupperware. I don't believe that captive breeding programs really do much to stop illegal trade, either.
  16. Love them. Look for them. Leave them where I find them.
  17. Generally, when one creates a locationless cache, they give an example of the thing they are looking for and often include a photo. That way, other cachers know what they are looking for and know the rules for an acceptable log. It seems that a person logging their own caches (locationless or otherwise) is either doing it to generate stats or doing it out of ignorance.
  18. Also, I was told that logs for a virtual or locationless cache would appear for the state in which the coordinates are listed on the web page, i.e. the owner's home state. If you look for your Florida stats, it may not show the other states or countries. I haven't been able to verify this, however.
  19. I always log a DNF. Sometimes not finding a cache can be more amusing than walking right up to it. Also, it alerts the cache owner if several people post DNF logs. The cache may be lost or mis-placed. My only failure is not going to a site in the first place!
  20. quote:Originally posted by Markwell:Even though I don't mind people knowing when I look at their cache pages, this instance and the communication from the cache owner sounds an awful lot like invasion of privacy. Yeah, I was a little surprised to get his message. I think he intended it in a friendly way but I understand how easily it could be misinterpreted. I guess I'll have to create a subscribers-only cache to see how this works.
  21. I was contacted by a cache owner who noticed I was browsing his page too early in the morning; he was concerned about my insomnia. I asked him how he knew and he told me there was now an audit function for the owner to check who was viewing and when. However, I can't seem to find it on my own cache pages. Anybody know about this? Thanks.
