  1. I prefer Idahoans too--potatoes, that is! Have you tried that potato vodka from Idaho? It's excellent, and it's about time! Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of it right now. Also unfortunately, I haven't been drinking it tonight! --laurak of dasein
  2. Last week I submitted a new cache. Minutes later (literally!) when I went back to add something I had forgotten, it was already approved! I was so stunned that I ran upstairs and woke Doug up to tell him about it! Indeed, Team Misguided is awesome! --laurak
  3. Seems to me that someone who is going to swipe TB's doesn't care WHAT the rules are. If they want to steal one, they will. If they want to steal all of them, or all but one--they will. Yes, it's very sad that people do that, but I don't think any modification of rules will dissuade a person so inclined. Let's hope this person comes to "see the light" and either log the bugs or put them back. --laurak
  4. Kids and their adults are invited to stop by dasein's campsite at the following coordinates to pick out a toy to take home: 45.14.908N 122.52.797W (aka site A29) One or two toys per kid, one per adult who can't resist (sorry, no "adult" toys). When we're at our campsite, we'll have the toy bowl out. It might stay out when we're not there too, we haven't decided yet... And adults, while you're there please sign our Thrilla in Yurtvilla mini-poster! Ok, so it's not a kid's event, but Doug and I want to do our part to help make the kids happy. And let's face it adults--isn't that what we all want most of all this weekend? --laurak of dasein
  5. That's where we learned about geocaching. Now it's almost 2 years later. Can't thank you enough for writing about it, Wil!
  6. Navdog, you have ALL the links! Thanks, I bookmarked this one too! Tonight we are in "our" Jacuzzi room in Redmond logging finds via the in-room DSL. Tomorrow we plan on finding Squaw Creek in addition to several others.
  7. After nearly 550 finds, we've never had anyone ask what we were doing. Oh wait, there was that security guard in the park across the street from the county courthouse... we told him the truth and showed him the cache page. Other than that, we'd just say that we're trying out or learning how to use our new GPS. We try to avoid situations with lots of aliens about--we don't like having to be stealthy.
  8. We tried a month ago to do a caching loop clear around Big Lava Bed, and got turned back by snow on both its east and west sides. We will be returning as soon as we can, but not until we know we can make it all the way around the Lava Bed without being stopped by snow; that might not be until June(?). If anyone else makes it out there and the snow is gone (or mostly gone) please let us know. Alternatively, is there a website where it is possible to check on Forest Road conditions? This is an incredible area, and we can't wait to go back! BTW, Spectacular is not to be missed!
  9. Great idea! I've always thought it would be a great get-together to go visit these Columbia River islands caches. If any cachers have a good-sized boat, we'd be the 1st to sign up and contribute to gas! Never ran into a cacher with a "big" boat though, or at least no one is willing to fess up. --laurak
  10. Troubled Waters, Raymond, WA. Note: Was recently disabled until owner can do some maintenance on it. Knowing Slinger, he'll be out there soon.
  11. Speaking of Fooshfoosh caches... We visited "You Whistle Punk" (GC315D) today, and are willing to adopt and care for it. The current container is small, cracked, and has a chunk missing. We guess the ziplock bag it's in and a holey garbage bag are still keeping it dry; only the "logbook" is slightly damp. We plan on visiting the area again in about a month (after snow in higher elevations is gone), and could replace the container with an ammo can and leave a logbook. Let us know. Also, there have been 3 no-find logs in a row on Sean Connery (GC5FFE). We want to hike up there rather soon, and hopefully can find it (or verify that it's gone).
  12. There will be a CITO event on May 3rd at the site of the original stash.
  13. Last summer Doug and I and some buddies went up to Lucky Strike Mine NE of Prineville, OR. The mine owners drove us up to the dig site, showed us how to dig for our own eggs and what to look for, and educated us on how the eggs formed. We found and bought several eggs. They will also cut your eggs in half for cheap, but we brought our eggs back to a local Portland rock shop with a quicker saw. Kop and his much-younger wife are very knowledgable about the area and are quite a hoot! We enjoyed visiting with them. We highly recommend the experience. They have digging tools available for your use. And also some really fancy polished stones for sale.
  14. We met Shotgun, Peashooter and Zoom last weekend and can vouch for 'em... yeah, they be good folks! Nobody wants to risk our relationship with the parks, only with the yurt folks! We're all just havin' fun talkin' about it...

    Champoeg 2004

Tents with lightning (B11-B16), now that's interesting!
  16. I think I have orange and black streamers left over from Blood Bath and Beyond! Hey, here's an idea: let's make the little ones pull ivy! Nah, just kidding! Hey, the parade is a great idea though. That would be a Kodak moment for proud parents. Pick a parade leader(s), have a kid carry his boombox playing parade music? A ribbon or certificate or prize for each kid. Maybe have leader(s) carrying a sign about "geocacaching kids' parade" or something? No kids ourselves, just a couple thoughts... --laurak

Ooo, ooo...! Interconnected crop circles! Or better yet--discounting Yurt F--the likeness of an alien being: the main path outlines its body, and yurts A-E represent 5 protruding eyes! I don't remember those trees in front of fractal's yurt last year. Have they been removed? Lots of those Terraserver images are several years old. Doug and I were both thrilled and intimidated when we easily zoomed in on our house! We couldn't believe it! --laurak
  18. Haven't cached in 2 weeks, feeling withdrawal. Last week the Portland (Oregon) area was incased in snow and freezing rain (not common, so the city pretty much shut down for a few days). Then my microbiology class started, and I have mandatory overtime at work for a few weeks. Today we went to the Humane Society and got a 4-mo female kitten to accompany our 21-mo male cat (yes, they're both fixed!). So far so good, but it's gonna take a while. Tomorrow I have to study BIGTIME, but we plan on going out to find one new cache not far from us. Next weekend we're going camping in the Central Oregon desert, and have WAY too many caches on our dockett. Can't wait! That should make up for the last couple of weeks! --laurak of dasein
  19. Too bad the geocaching logo isn't red-orange-yellow-green. I've never seen any blue peppers! Your designs look great! I am especially drawn to the 2nd one. Don't have photoshop--can't help on design , but if any of your coins show up in the Portland area, rest assured that we'll be hunting 'em! --laurak of dasein
  20. Wil Wheaton told me about it. Well at least his blog did. Wil Wheaton's blog page
  21. Ok, so Vernonia Tracks is not an abandoned railroad tunnel, but it's local and sounds both cool and scary at the same time. It is on our list for this spring, though at my weight (280#) I would prefer to bushwack down and back up the ravine to find the cache. On a different, yet somewhat related note, if you're into old mining stuff, on the way to The Opal Creek Cache you will encounter several old mine entrances, mining equipment, deteriorating half-bridges, and old cars, all of which are very interesting to those into NW history, not mention the gorgeous crystal-clear river and waterfalls along the way. Do your research ahead of time, and you won't be disappointed. A hybrid or mountain bike makes the journey quicker. Leave your bike at the store in Jawbone Flats for the final leg to the cache. They'll keep an eye on it for you. If you're extra motivated, continue on to The Cedar Flats Bonus Cache. See the cache photo galleries for our photos and those by others. --laurak
  22. quote:Originally posted by TennisKid:I'd drop them in a local cache here, but that's not moving them very far at all. A lot of bug owners don't care how far their bugs move at one time, just that they keep moving.
  23. We're always suspicious when we read a log that says "We took this and that, left something, can't remember what." From day one, I have carried a pencil in my pocket, and immediately after making the find and trade, write down (on the cache page) what time we were there, what we T/L, and any other thoughts. That way we don't forget or get caches confused. We feel like logging what you T/L online makes you think again, and keeps you honest.
  24. bump! The final 5 tickets will be released within days. This is your final chance to garner one of those coveted tickets to fractalSoup's Blood Bath & Beyond
