Set out the morning with a 9 cache trail in mind. The little one fell in a mud puddle wearing white trousers , ended up falling into a holly bush due to horrendous overgrowth , two muggled caches, boots saturated with mud, little one had her first encounter with stinging nettles , had to push the stroller over grass, followed by sludge, followed by wheel-unfriendly terrain, followed by a path made of loose stones, little ones shoe came off after a slip on some wet bricks and lost a shoe in the river , and after the 4 mile walk/slip/slide only found 4 of the 9 caches with two clearly being muggled, one wild overgrowth that resulted in numerous scratches, one up a steel hill which subsequently ended up with me flailing around because it was slippy, one search that ended when a tree slapped me in the face, and the rest were (thankfully) fairly normal finds and DNFs. Never again!

So, just to be sure, I can use a pre-existing hole in the ground, if I can find one? Just wanna be certain

Thank you, everyone

Now, I know caches can't be buried, I understand that rule loud and clear. What isn't clear is can a cache be partially buried? If no digging would be required to remove the cache because only a part of it is underground, would that be acceptable? I was thinking of hiding a cache where a tube holding the log is glued onto a block of wood that looks like a tree stump. If the tube was underground with the wood stays over ground and is easy to pull up, is that alright?

Since you never found the cache, how can you justify logging it as found. Didn't he say he located it? See the message I referenced. How did he know he spotted it? I think you're reading too much into his choice of words.

Thank you, that's great!

Nevermind. -
In the physical log, I'll use TFTC if there's room (eg. not nano caches) Online log, it depends. If the cache and find were unremarkable, I'll usually just say TFTC, for lack of anything better to say.

Is there any way to find out about active or up and coming souvenirs, or do they just appear as you complete the requirements without realizing?
-
I usually just things like mini highlighters, bouncy balls and stationary in.

The CO deleted my DNF (March 2012) and wrote me a note about how the cache is right where they left it; they also gave me some hints and finished with: Ah, but that's not the point. I'm not simply collecting smilies, I'm logging my activity. If I hadn't given a real try then I would have logged a note. But I did, so I logged the DNF. Deleting that kind'a ticked me off -- 'cause it's a lie (of omission). Those DNFs mean something to me, gosh darn it. Wow DNF's are part of the story, how does one "tidy" up their logs? And what purpose does it even serve? If I were you, I'd just relog the DNF with the original date and calmly explain to the CO that it's part of our logging activity and you'd like it to stay there.

Hundreds of logs in one day?
firestronaut replied to twilitefirefly's topic in General geocaching topics
We do. It was a figure of speech. As in, don't hassle them or start threads saying there's no point in it. -
People play the game differently. That cache was up a tree when it wasn't supposed to be, so if the finder wants to log it was a find, based on the fact he actually find the cache, let him. I've not signed log and still logged it as a find. There's no rules in the game, only guidelines. If there's a good reason for not signing the log book, most CO's don't mind. Some people can't climb trees, even with the equipment. It's takes time and money to learn, and it's just not worth it if you only come across a climbing cache every so often.

Hundreds of logs in one day?
firestronaut replied to twilitefirefly's topic in General geocaching topics
If people want to find 1,000 finds in a day, let them. It's an experience in itself. Even with massive power trails, it still takes time and planning, and probably a lot of stamina. -
Geocache distance in Military base
firestronaut replied to gabryel67's topic in General geocaching topics
But the guidelines are there for a reason. Unless your country is 160m wide, I don't see the problem. Just move the cache to a different spot further away? -
should i up the difficulty(2) of my cache?
firestronaut replied to howzitboy's topic in General geocaching topics
Or maybe some people are being lazy. CO said they think the rating is right. A good hide doesn't necessarily mean the ratings need to go up. -

I was talking about that particular cache. If they had of just taken a slight step back, it would have been found within seconds. GZ can be 30ft out, it just seems that people give up after a mere minute or two at the GZ shown on a map, not looking around the area. -
Signature things to leave at a cache?
firestronaut replied to DSchulten88's topic in General geocaching topics
All these are really cool! I'm still looking for inspiration on a signature items. The painted pebbles are really awesome and obviously won't cost the earth! ( see whut I did thurrr? ) -
When I first started, my first 3/4 caches, I didn't realize GZ could be off by 30ft and logged a bunch of DNF's because I searched that exact spot with no luck Got them now though.

It seems you're having major trouble placing that cache! I didn't know there was a priority list! I would have thought if your cache is ready to go and the other isn't, yours would be published, especially if the other has been on the shelf that long!

How about just leaving it right where it is, as it is, and letting it ride? You initially rated it what you thought it should be so leave it alone. No need to feel guilty if your cache receives DNFs. Stop catering. If someone wants to find it, they'll work to find it. +1 I found a cache this morning, which has a 1.5 difficulty rating, and the logs before me were showing DNFs. I didn't hold out much hope on finding it, and after 7/8 minutes I was ready to give up. I stepped back, looked at it from a different angle and suddenly spotted it. The difficulty rating was spot on and the people before me clearly didn't look properly. If all the info is spot on, don't change a thing. Some people seem to expect the cache to jump into their hands once they arrive at GZ.
