  1. Lunatics? Yep, and dadgum proud of it......
  2. I actually enjoy winter caching. There's no problem with gnats, ticks or snakes and I usually see more deer and other wildlife than in the warmer months. After the trees have shed their leaves, you can see things in the woods that you would probably miss in spring and summer.
  3. I'd like to hear from owners of the 100 - 300 series. I figure that whatever their performance under tree cover is will be mirrored in the new models as well.
  4. I am considering the purchase of one of the newer series Explorist GPSr's when they come out but would like to hear from existing owners as to how they perform in the woods before I buy one. Thanks
  5. Heres a good one in my area. Cool Dip and a Cave
  6. Many times, it has been the caches that took me two or three tries to find that I've enjoyed most. A 4.5 is meant to be a challenge and that makes it all the more satisfiing when you finally find it.
  7. I understand that there is a MAJOR upgrade for ExpertGPS coming sometime later this year so you might want to hold off before you choose one over the other.
  8. I started out using a Magellan GPS 315 and now use a Magellan Meridan Yellow.
  9. I use the HTML files that GSAK creates, no need for extra software because Pocket Internet Explorer is already on your Ipaq. Once you get it in your handheld, just go to file explorer and click on the "index" file. When it opens, go in the Internet Explorer menu and make it your home page. I've created an icon for the file on my desktop so I can go right to it. Works great once you get it set up.
  10. You can record a short voice message at each cache, detailing what items you traded and then play them back when you are logging your finds at home. Great if you've done a lot of caches in one day and can't remember what you traded at each one.
  11. I have a Meridian Yellow which is identical to the green and I have been extremely happy with it. I don't think there's anything out there that offers so much for such a reasonalble price. Yes, the basemap is pretty sparce but that can be easily taken care of by adding the Mapsend Topo software maps. The green/yellow has a nice, large LCD display that is easy to read and the controls are easy to master. This was one of the best bargains in Geocaching, it's a shame they quit making them. If you have a chance to buy one, go for it.
  12. If you're already using GSAK, just have it convert your cache database to an HTML file, load it into your Ipaq and open it with Pocket Internet Explorer. No need for other programs and it works great! I've started using this on my Ipaq 3955 and haven't looked back.
  13. I have a Magellan 315 and a Meridian Yellow.
  14. Has anyone heard anything about the pocket version of Expert GPS? I understoond it was supposed to be out sometime in the summer but so far it hasn't materialized.
  15. I have an Ipaq 3955 and I use Geocaching Swiss Army Knife on my computer to send my GPX files to my handheld as an HTML file and view it in Pocket Internet Explorer. This setup works better than either GPXSonar or GPXview and I've since deleted both of them. I also have Mapopolis installed and use the GpxtoMaplet program to convert my GPX files to pushpins on the maps. The program will then route you right to them.
  16. I suppose I could be considered a traditionalist. For me, a cache is a combination of experiences. The thrill of the hunt, the search at the final location and the promise of some unique item to trade for. Many times, the latter consists of assorted junk, but sometimes, you get pleasantly surprised. Each cache I find is like adding another pearl to a necklace. Each one provides it's own kind of experience and the trading of items at the final location is part of that. Sheer numbers mean little to me and I like to take my time on each and every hunt because most likely, there is something to see along the way. I guess everyone has their own way of enjoying caching, mine definitely includes the time honored trading of items.
  17. When you are transferring waypoints to your GPSr, GSAK gives you a choice from 1 to the total of waypoints you have in the database. It would be nice to have a column that numbers the cache waypoints 1,2 3, 4, etc so it would be easier to select by number say, line 20 thru 40 and transfer only them to the GPSr.
  18. I started out with a Magellan 315 and still use it as a backup unit. It is very sensitive and tends to jump around quite a bit when you're near a cache but if you take your time, it is also very accurate. Over half the caches I've found were with a 315.
  19. Oh Man, that stuff makes me itch just to look at it!!!
  20. I use GSAK, mapopolis and expert GPS.
  21. Even my worst day at Geocaching is better than my best day at work.....
  22. I've been using your GSAK for some time now and I think it's great. It has become my program of choice for waypoint management. Thanks for all your hard work.
  23. This will notifiy you as soon as they are approved. http://www.texasgeocaching.com/cache_alert.asp Happy Caching,
  24. I've been using the 4.05 upgrade in my Meridian Yellow and have been very happy with it. Locks on the sats quicker and seems to have a lower EPE most of the time. I think the key to getting good results after an upgrade is to do a total reset. Mine had a problem with the clock running about 2 minutes slow after upgrading and a full reset solved the problem. Give 4.05 a try, I think you'll be happy with it.
