  1. My Map76S which I bought from the GPS store reads around 2800 mph! Made me wonder since it was a new unit
  2. I have the Map76S and love it. At times I think I bought more that what is needed for geocaching but I wouldn't trade my unit in.
  3. Here are my thoughts on this since I may start one. I would think that someone connecting from flight to flight wouldn't go after the bug off airport grounds. To me it would be too difficult. Take a bus, taxi, whatever to go and get a bug! My guess is it would be someone who landed at the airport and was in on vacation or business and you could place the cache within a few miles from the airport. This would allow the person to stop on the way in or out at the cache. Again my thoughts and I could be wrong.....
  4. There is a bug I had and placed in a cache. I noticed someone picked it up in the log but the next day the bug still showed. I kindly sent them an e-mail asking them to go to the site and log it. I mentioned if they needed help I can walk them through it. A few hours later the bug was logged. In this case I didn't own the bug or the cache. As a proud parent who just had my 8 tags delivered I would like someone to look out for mine so I kindly look out for them.

  6. I have a bug that is hopefully going to Alaska but I want it to get there via cache. Although to start in Alaska and come home would also work.... hmmmm I may take someone up on this!
  7. SteveOr, You didn't insult my intelligence. Not everyone can know everything and being new to this I didn't know you can sample them. What't funny is I read another post just before I checked on this one where someone mentioned the demo at Garmin! I went to Garmin and would like to combine both of them into one package. For what I am looking for the topo seems more up my alley. Thanks for the help and feedback.

  9. I have ski poles from snow shoeing that I use from time to time. I only take one and it comes in handy when crossing streams, going up or downhill. Where I am the terrain isn't that bad. I like it more for digging for the cache but you do need to be careful. It would be nice if it would colapse but that's ok if it doesn't. The last few times I haven't taken any poles so for me to spend the money for treking poles doesn't seem worth it when I have ski poles.

    Photo?

I was there but don't ask me what I was reading... There was something that mentioned different formats, which now I can't find to even describe to you. I will upload the photo and hope all is well.

    Photo?

How do I place a photo to appear under my name in the left column? I did a quick scan and didn't see anything.
  12. I have done some searches and the biggest thing I learned was that the software isn't the most accurate. I am wondering which software is better for me before I buy one and wish I bought the other. I don't use the GPS so much for the roads since I print Mapquest before I head out for a cache. What I am looking for is something that will show streams, rivers, lakes, etc. I will be buying a small boat and would like to have items like that in there. Today I did a cache in the city and came across a river I didn't know I had to cross. The topo seems to offer the same as the roads and rec. but???? Here in WI I'm not so concerned about the elevation since it isn't like I am in the mountains. I have read complaints that the R&R is outdated. Any help would be appreciated. I have a Map76s if that matters and for now I don't want to buy both of them.
  13. Doesn't it matter how far you are hiking to the cache? Some days I take a backpack but found it bulky when going through the growth and trees. Not to mention heavy on hot days. Now I take a fanny type pack with a bottle of Gatorade, deep woods off, cache goodies, digital camera and flashlight. There have been times during the day I use the flashlight to look into trees etc for the cache. I'm still finding this bulky so now the Gatorade sits in the truck with the pack and I take the camera, goodies and my gps unit. Now I mention distance since out of my 49 find most are within a 1/4 mile walking distance one way. I can't see carrying everything some of you take on that. Now if I was hiking the backwoods then yes I would carry those items.
  14. I haven't sent out any bugs yet but will have my 8 tags in the next few days. Here is what I plan on sending so far... 1) Darth Vader figure 2) R2D2 figure 3) Buzz Lightyear - goal Milwaukee to Alaska 4) John Deere diecast tractor. The remaining 4 tags I will hold onto to see how these go. I have a feeling they will disappear but want to still try. If I don't I won't know.

  16. Look at the fun you had and the great story you can tell!

  18. Wow if you need a poster to keep track of the bugs you have had out of the 1900 I give you credit! So far I have ohhhhhh 5! What if you print the pages from the gallery? I don't know how many pages you would end up with but as new bugs are added you just print the page. Keep the pages in a nice 3 ring binder and you are set. Just a thought.
  19. What I look for is a few things. My limit is about 60 miles (via GPS) which means it actually could be 75 or so miles with driving. What I look for each day is travel bugs and new cache to be a first find. If there are none I continue to work in a pattern of within the 60 miles. If there is a cool travel bug I would travel further or if the cache is in a neat place or clever idea I would do the same and find it. Hope this helps.
  20. If you look at the bug and think you will have problems leave it at home. Someone won't question a figure travel bug but if the travel bug is attached to a knife you have a different story...
  21. I'm in the same boat with getting ready to launch some. From what I see the cool ones are the ones that disappear the most. I have a feeling though that for the most part the lifespan is short and you need to be aware of that or don't send them out...

  23. Then would the map76 have been enough with just the 8 meg of memory if I can only do the one or a portion at a time. I thought that it would combine them and be more detailed. Could I download 4 meg of one and 4 meg of another if I just do the area around me?
  24. When I purchased my Map76s one of the reasons was for more memory. The person I delt with didn't know the answer to the question. I am told that with 8 meg that I can download only one set of maps like topo for example. With the Map76s having 24 meg does that mean that I could download topo and roads/recreation for example? The second question is how cluttered does the screen start to get with downloading these items. Thanks for the feedback....
  25. I thought it would be interesting to see where you are finding your cache and if it is anything unusual. Some of them I found were real clever and it may give others ideas. The two examples that jump out at me is one where the cache was a 3" painted PVC inserted into the ground so only about 3" was sticking out. The owner then hollowed out a stump from a tree and placed that over the cache. Being in a woods setting is seemed so natural. The other example is a multi micro cache where the cordinates for the next leg were on a pice of metal about a 1/2" wide by 4 inches long. The owner had a brown foam muffin and the metal was slid into the bottom. The muffin was then placed in a hole in a tree so it was hard to see. This leg has stumped many people who give up and e-mail for help. The clue by the way reads "no cookies but how about a muffin" or something like that. I can't wait to hear others.
