Garmin Etrex Vista H usb-driver?
GermanSailor replied to mtkoef's topic in GPS technology and devices
Just download and let run the WebUpdater. The USB drivers are included. GermanSailor -
THAT was the first clever answer! GermanSailor

Do it! I don't think it is bad etiquette to actually have a geocache with the land owner's permission. GermanSailor

Sombody wrote "mutha fuka" in a log? Maybe that's not the end of the world. Reminds me a little about those comedy clips. Don't panic! GermanSailor

If you log a NM, the geocache gets the "swiss flag" attribute, showing that it needs maintenance. Many geoachers avoid such geocaches in their PQs, but on the other hand many owners don`t notice the new attribute. The owner can get rid of this NM-attribute by either logging a owner maintenance or manually deselecting it. After all, it`s just an attribute. // Yes, if you found a geocache and figured out that it needs maintenance, you log your found-it log and the NM. Don`t hesitate to log a NM, it's valuable information for the owner. Please no NM-logs because the front pages of the logbook are full.... GermanSailor

logging a find when they couldn't reach the cache
GermanSailor replied to Highland Horde's topic in General geocaching topics
I had guys, logging a cache as found, which they didn't. The thought a photo of the area is suitable as well. Yes you can do this. It's called geotagging or whatsoever. Maybe flickr or panoramio are better websites to post your pictures. Geocaching is about FINDING something. GermanSailor -
Caches requiring photos of the finders...
GermanSailor replied to geo blazer's topic in General geocaching topics
Same here! You can always photoshop a smiley or the Groundspeak frog on your face. But ALRs are not admissible anyways. So, if a picture of you is requiered, post a picture of your GPS, your stamp, or whatever. If the owner deletes the log, inform a reviewer. GermanSailor -
No, it's not to dangerous. I don't have to go there without the proper equipment. If I think it's too dangerous, I don't do it. That's either grown up responsibility or just a darwin award. GermanSailor

You can upload pictures when you log. Later, you will see a link at the bottom of you log:"Upload an Image for This Log". Click this link and upload the pictures. (resize them first to 800x600) GermanSailor

The 60CSx is a very good unit! Maybe you have the "Lock on Road" feature enabled. Go to: Setup - Map - "on the left with the "N"" you find the Lock On Road selection: select: Off Don't forget to calibrate the compass and make sure you enter the coordinates correctly. Some people try to press the dezimal minutes provided by Groundspeak into the seconds setting on the unit. This won't work very well. GermanSailor

Not sure what you mean. Every geocaching account (aka as the person who signed up) has a number: Yours is: 1895372 You can find this by moving the cursor over the name here in the forum. At the bottom of the browser page will be a link which includes the owner id. GermanSailor

What to do with a spiteful geocacher?
GermanSailor replied to mck681s's topic in General geocaching topics
Geocaching is a fun hobby. What you experienced doesn't sound like fun. My advise: Forget about it. It's just not worth the worries. There is so much more to explore. GermanSailor -
I don't know what the material "enamle" is, "enamel" make no sense. So I calculated what a coin should weight if made from: Copper: 30.3 gramms Iron: 26.5 gramms Zinc: 24.1 gramms Based on a volume of 3.4 ccm and density (specific weight of 8,9 / 7,9 / 7,1 gramms per ccm) GermanSailor

Same here. I was hoping they fixed this with the last big maintenance break, but nothing happened. GermanSailor

That's true about the earthcaches and virtuals. However I'm pretty sure there is no grandfather status for the codeword log requirement. Guidelines on this issue: GermanSailor

Yes, you have to sign the logbook. EVERY owner checks this, especially the big and easily legible nano logbooks are checked. I tend not to search nanos. It's always a pain to get the logbook out and back in again. GermanSailor

Not quite. Back to topic. You should be allowed to bring a GPSr (ones without a radio transmitter of course) on the aircraft. I once had to remove the batteries in order to be allowed to take the GPSr in the hand luggage. The girl at security didn't complain about the spare batteries in my bagpack. To put it in a nutshell: Lots of people take their GPS on board. But you don't know how the individual TSA officer acts. Best thing is to put it in the handluggage without the batteries installed. And ask the cabin crew before switching it on. GermanSailor

Requires photo and clue before logging a find

Not on geocaching.com since additional logging requirements are no longer allowed. Link GermanSailor -
Is it possible to start a cache without a GPS?
GermanSailor replied to KarateNeko2's topic in How do I...?
Might be! Still: The question: "Is it possible to start a cache without a GPS?" is a valid one and should be answered seriously. This was done, so it's up to the community now to not let this thread wander away. GermanSailor -
In western Europe people actually learn foreign languages, usually everybody speaks English. You can always ask the owner to provide you with a translation. At least the crucial parts can be translated. I just checked this site: http://www.online-translator.com The results are sometimes horrible, sometimes funny, but usually you get the information you need. GermanSailor

Garmin map pointer pointing in wrong direction?
GermanSailor replied to 3bocas's topic in GPS technology and devices
The point of the needle shows the direction were you goto-waypoint is. You either have the electronic compass calibrated or you are fast enough that the unit can figure out your movement. If you don't have a waypoint entered, you won't see a needle. I once that the problem, that the unit didn't switch from the electronic (magnetic) compass to the other one, even when going much faster than the setup-up speed. I figured this out because the needle was pointing down, but I knew I was drining in the right direction and the distance decreased as well. I had to perform a hard reset and reinstall the same firmware using the webupdater to fix this. I have no idea why it happened. GermanSailor -
1300:1 But I don't think you "earn" the right to call the reviewers attention after a couple of found-it logs. If common sense, a changed situation at the location or better knowledge justifies a NA, than everybody should go for it. The reviewer should contact the owner anyway to figure out what is going on. Is it possible to start a cache without a GPS?
GermanSailor replied to KarateNeko2's topic in How do I...?
I suggest you first learn to operate a GPSr find a couple of geocaches. And after that you start thinking about hiding a geocache. What you could do, is set up a letterbox-hybrid cache. There coordinates have to be used, but the rest is usually done with clues. i.e. you figure out the coors of the starting location with google earth and then take pictures or provide other clues. Still, the way it is commonly done is: Know how to use the GPS first, finding second, hiding later. GermanSailor -
That's exactly what I do as well. The big advantage is, that you can upload the caches with GSAK and all its nice features. (smart names, %hint) GermanSailor

Geocoin drops in member only caches
GermanSailor replied to Fiver1's topic in General geocaching topics
There is no rule about dropping trackables in member only caches. And there is no guarantee that those caches are safer. They are hidden outside as well and can be muggled. I'm pretty sure, Groundspeak will not make a guideline against dropping trackables in member only caches. That would be not very clever considering that they make money of the premium members.
