Ebay selling drilled Scottish Geocoin
jerryo replied to qichina's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
I'm happy to bid if required. As long as I don't bid against anyone here. I'll release it too, of course Please let me know, someone. Edited to change my mind: it's now up to 8 quid plus postage: someone's being silly. -

The listing's still active at the moment and the first bid's still there. -
Do some of us take Geocaching TOO seriously

I'd love to see the email that prompted this thread -
One thing that REALLY iritates me is...
jerryo replied to Delta68's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
I didn't say it had to be resolved! Just a note saying "I'll look into it at such-and-such a time" would suffice I totally agree. I recently was responsible for the archiving of three caches that the owners had lost interest in and, despite one’s logging into geocaching.com on subsequent occasions, they made no attempt to even disable their caches, even though my logs said the physical cache wasn’t there (it wasn’t even a DNF on my part). It’s lazy not to write a note if you’ve actually bothered to log in. Almost as bad as people not replying to emails. -

This has gone OT and OT was discussed here recently. -
I can't find that on any of my caches.

Sorry? Senior members? Who are they then? Or, possibly more accurately, who do they think they are? Aren't we all "equal" apart from the moderators with their lightning bolts, or is it that don't you want to upset the vocal people in case you get flamed? I can see the logic there, though. Incidentally, does anyone else feel really sorry for nobby.nobbs about this? It's his cache and it's up to him whether he deletes any logs whether they are notes, DNFs Fs, or whatever. It'll blow over soon and maybe the cache page will be amended to accommodate, but here we are again opining and slagging off a cacher for a possible mistake that anyone could have made. How many times have people found a cache with a really carp description, coords out of the solar system or what have you, and the setter won't alter it? I've had a few but I never took it to the forums.

I just Googled "cheeky trails" and got this. Fantastic! Just haul your bike over that stile and ride walk towards the kissing gate over that meadow. Mwahahaha. Ahem.

The emphasis was on empty pavements and busy roads. Some of us live in areas outside London where there are cars doing more than 15MPH and no pedestrians on the paths.

Temporary Disabled caches
jerryo replied to The Lavender Hill Mob's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
And if a note is posted, at least others know what's going on too. Sorted. -
Possibly because cyclists who sometimes ride on footpaths are slow targets and, being engine-less, can actually hear the fervent invective and diatribes against them. Also, when abused by cantankerous pedestrians, they are maybe less likely than their motorised counterparts to dismount and stick one on their fulminating abuser. Just a thought.

I'd put money on it

Temporary Disabled caches
jerryo replied to The Lavender Hill Mob's topic in United Kingdom and Ireland
That's different as you said you archived it rather than temporarily disabling it. I assume you contacted the reviewers to unarchive it later. What were talking about is the temporary disabling of caches, not archiving them and re-animating them later. Anyway, there's nothing heavy handed about giving a few weeks for maintenance and then making enquiries. There are caches that may need disabling for a while longer, but not as many as all that. If there were no rules then there'd be chaos. -
Temporary Disabled caches

Months??? They’re not very good reasons on the whole, which is why the reviewers drop in their reminders. Agreed, if they’re at the top of a mountain (the caches, not the reviewers) then it takes time, but we’re not really talking about that in general. If someone’s got time to hunt, they’ve got time to maintain. It may be worth citing the guidelines: “As the cache owner, you are also responsible for physically checking your cache periodically, and especially when someone reports a problem with the cache (missing, damaged, wet, etc.). You may temporarily disable your cache to let others know not to hunt for it until you have a chance to fix the problem. This feature is to allow you a reasonable time – normally a few weeks – in which to arrange a visit to your cache. In the event that a cache is not being properly maintained, or has been temporarily disabled for an extended period of time, we may archive or transfer the listing. It may be difficult to fulfill your maintenance obligations if you place a cache while traveling on vacation or otherwise outside of your normal caching area. These caches may not be published unless you are able to demonstrate an acceptable maintenance plan. It is not uncommon for caches to go missing, areas to be cleared, trails to be blocked or closed, objects used for multi-cache or puzzles to be moved or removed, etc. Your maintenance plan must allow for a quick response to reported problems.” -

But the reviewers, I’m pleased to say, don’t appear to have the same attitude. If you can’t maintain them, then remove them. And there are denied opportunities for other people to put caches out in the same area while you’re procrastinating. It’s not really a matter of getting stressed about it. It’s about playing the game according to the rules. One of them, as you well know, is that you should be able to offer timely maintenance. But you’re not doing anything anyway. So let someone else have a go. -
I would. Er, how useful is it? What do you use it for? Seriously.
-
You've made your own counter-argument. It's mostly the motorbikes that do it and, while you may see cyclists on your travels, they certainly don't cause the damage that motorbikes do. It's not the same principle at all. Pedal cycles don't have the engine needed to churn up the paths like that. That's like comparing the passage of a deer on a path with a herd of wildebeests. I'd say that all the photos you cite are motorbike-related: no-one on a push bike is going to be able to even move on some of that mud.

But you did get to, er, do a 5/5 cache instead. -
But rather than sticks, poles are highly recommended as a walking aid for any hiker, even the super-fit. I'd recommend the spring-loaded ones though. Have a look here.
