  1. For my list of geocache finds, I notice a couple are out of order. When I'm posting multiple finds for the same day, I post the first cache found that day, then second and so on; however, I noticed in a couple of instances the cache order does not reflect the order in which I entered the finds, consequently my finds are out of order in 2 instances. Is there a way to fix this? Among other things it has messed up my finds milestones, making them inaccurate. On a day with 2 finds I deleted the entry that was erroneously showing as the 1st found on that day. Then I re-entered it hoping it would place it as the last entry on that day. No luck. It keeps putting it in the same spot (Space Shuttle was found 1st, Patrick Park 2nd that day). Anyway I can't figure out how to correct the order. I am not sure why this happened to begin with. When entering the Good vs Evil entries which were found on the same day, the finds DID stay/post in the order that I entered them. The entries were all done on my mac.
  2. Thanks to all for info. everyone! I definitely will pull the activation code for each coin as I obtain them. I just wasn't sure how long the code would be valid if I pulled each right after coin arrives, but it sounds like it is a permanent # once obtained and not a temp #. So far what I have done for each coin I have collected is to create a word doc containing the sales photo of coin, bio/coin info, specs, vendor, and price, etc. In essence, create a bio sheet on each coin. I was thinking of obtaining the activation code and then writing the # with tracking# on bottom of each sheet. I have created each bio sheet very quickly right when I place the order. Later I attach the sales receipt when the coin arrives. Already on this site, I have purchased coins and recently found the artists who designed them in this forum, so I put their info about coin etc. on the bio sheet too. Kinda cool to find out who designed the coins. Thanks again; I am better informed now.
  3. Thanks! I took a look and now better understand the icons. About the tracking #, I suppose you mean if I show/let others view unactivated coins without hiding the #, someone can take the tracking # and activate/claim it themselves. I am aware of not showing trackable #s in photos because some people will log it, cheat or whatever they want to call it, logging miles the trackable did not actually travel. I'm careful not to show someone else's trackable in a photo without blurring # first.
  4. Welcome to geocoins and the forums! I can't agree more about Droo's point of creating a spreadsheet of coins and activation codes. I didn't when I started collecting and then a couple of years later I wanted to record that information. Something that would have taken only minutes when I first received the coins, took up top an hour per coin to chase down with some coins 2 years down the track. (Due to vendors no longer existing, or not knowing where a coin had come from in the first place) Now it is a lot easier as Groundspeak list most codes. If you do activate them, do not mark them as Collectable unless you want them to disappear in to someones collection really quickly. What do you mean, do not mark as a collectible comment and disappearing?
  5. Thanks for all the responses, helpful. With my coins, I don't think I'm interested in taking any of them places/events to be "discovered" by other cachers. I may share them for viewing, but I don't think I'm interested in activating them for the discovered entry/icon (of course I may change my mind; we will see). I have some patches & a key chain I've purchased for this purpose. I'm not sure the icons are a big deal to me. Have to look at more profiles to get a better idea of what these icons are about. I would really love to send some out into the wild and follow their adventures, but after reading posts in forum it seems a fair amount disappear for whatever reason. I think I would be terribly disappointed if a coin I really liked turned up missing, especially after a short run. I do think I will at least send out a couple coins, perhaps even a few, I purchase for that purpose. Test the waters. Right now, with the exception of one underwhelming coin, the ones I have obtained I would like to keep and don't want to part with. I know tastes change and so may mine.
  6. I reserved a gold version of this coin a few days ago. I'm just starting to view the discussions here on this forum and came across this post. Very cool coin! I live in Florida and have had experiences with gator hunting; felt this coin would be a neat addition to my collection.
  7. I am new to geocaching. I have seen some really nice geocoins on various sites and decided to dip my foot into geocoin collecting. I have purchased 7 or 8 at this point. I don't want to go hog wild, but collect a few geocoins here and there that interest me or have a special meaning to me. I do have a some questions. While I do believe I will keep these coins in MY collection, you never know what decisions will be made down the road. Should I activate these coins on geocaching.com and list them as a collectible or should I keep them unactivated? It sounds like if I do activate them and later decide pass them on to someone else, they can adopt them from me. Not sure what is the best way to handle this. Which leads me to my 2nd question: The coins I purchased came with slip of paper noting point of origin/vendor, i.e. coinsandpins etc., etc. I guess I go to these sites and put in the tracking # and this generates an activation code # to activate coins on geocaching.com, sooooooo.... if I decide not to activate coins while they sit in my collection, do I just go to the various sites for activation codes and keep this code# on a slip of paper with the coin? How long is this activation code good for?
  8. From what I could tell it was a good price and didn't want to pass it up; usually I would spend more time researching an item. Cost was the biggest factor in not going for the Oregon (at least $125-$150 more, used in excellent condition). I didn't want to spend a lot of money on unit, only to find out I simply don't care for it or find myself reverting back to the iPhone. I looked at the Montana, not ready to dive that deep yet. If it turns out I really like using a gpsr and find I'm using it a lot, I will invest in the best I can get. Generally, I believe you get want you pay for. I did purchase a anti-glare screen protector for the garmin, more for protection/smudge resistant. I have one on my iPhone which helps with the screen viewing issue in daylight, but not much.
  9. What kind of battery life are you typically getting? Alkalins - don't bother you might get 4 to 5 hours. Hybrid NiMH - about 7 to 9 hours Hi capacity NiMh - up to 10 or 11 I currently have eneloop rechargeables, 2000 mAH. Hopefully, can I can get decent time with these.

  11. Thanks. I feel a bit better about my purchase. I know there will be a learning curve. I need to work out a system. I guess if field notes are a pain to enter on the 400, I could make a simply entry on iPhone with each find: enter GC# to bring up cache, enter brief field note w/"found it" (and I mean brief, something that simply jogs memory, 1 -5 words). Later use this saved log/field note list on phone as reference when actually posting finds on the computer. I tend to enter finds within 24hrs. In addition, I take a photo at each cache which in itself jogs the memory. I originally started posting the logs/photos from phone, but found I prefer to do it later on my computer. Also wastes less time in field. Plus can't stand the fact that one can't use keyboard in landscape orientation with the app on iPhone. So I'm thinking, load a PQ to colorado, navigate etc. with colorado, make field note entry on phone. Does this make sense? Not sure what other cachers are doing out there. Beginning to read to discussions/forum when I can.
  12. I just purchased this unit and I'm waiting for it to arrive. I wish I had thought to check out this forum before I made the purchase. I did some research and the information is a bit overwhelming to someone who is not familiar with GPS receivers. One thing is clear, not matter what one uses, there are always pros and cons. Does anyone have experience with the Colorado 400t? What has been your geocaching experience with it? Any firmware issues (when my arrives I will see what version is on it)? I know sometimes updating to certain versions can cause more issues than solve. I was deciding between the Oregon & Colorado. I choose the Colorado over Oregon because of: * Cost - I was able to purchase Colorado in like new condition, no cosmetic issues, includes all manuals/accessories for $162 * Complaints about Oregon's poor display in daylight, I currently use an iPhone 4 which has the same issue. It is hard to see in the daytime, a real problem in bright sunny Florida! I have to try to find shade to check data which can be annoying. I understand the display on Colorado is somewhat better for concerning this issue, hope this is right. * No touchscreen - I love touchscreen technology, but sometimes I wear gloves while caching and must remove them to manipulate the iPhone touchscreen, again a bit annoying. I am new to geocaching and have been using an iPhone 4. It does a pretty good job, but I decided to get a dedicated unit. I will still carry my phone, but felt a dedicated unit would have some advantages. With the iPhone some of the disadvantages are: * Battery life * Accuracy - sometimes it just flakes out which I believe is related to tree cover etc. * Durability - not waterproof and in some terrain I worry about damaging the phone, this is beside the general water/dirt issues. I also kayak and a waterproof unit would be a benefit. * Poor display in in bright sunlight - I live in Florida so I often have to find shade/cover to view the screen I'm just sitting here wondering if I should have done more research, before pulling the trigger. If you have experience with the Colorado 400t, what are your thoughts on it? Advice? Tips? Thanks
