  1. This is not my cache, but the owner has requested that pics be posted on the logs. These are posted on the cache logs. This owner is very creative, and has many here that are more than amazing. Team Royal with the find: Team Magic, same find: Note: This cache is on a public access, and has not been muggled so far. If you look closely, the Team Shutterbug name of the owner is embedded into the web.
  2. Can we quote this post enough? I truly believe this may be the post of the year on any geocaching website anywhere. I have seen way too many micros taking up space on the map where a really ingenious full size cache could have made more seekers truly glad they took up the sport.
  3. As I stated in another post, a minimum of 10 of my hidden caches are placed in serious bear territory. I never carry, unless the season is open for whatever... But then, rabbit season is open 365 days a year here.
  4. The answer to your problem lies not in programming, but in basic map reading, and the ability to use a compass. As stated above, the hider of the particular cache probably requires the seeker to have such knowledge. Do not forget to include the variable of magnetic variation into your equation if using a compass, or your GPS database. If one is adept at map reading and compass work, any co-ordinate, anywhere, can be reached within 30 feet without the aid of a GPSr. Triangulation is merely a method of putting two lines on a map, and walking to where the two lines meet. edit, on second thought: Topographical maps are helpful.
  5. At a minimum, 10 of my hidden caches are in serious bear country. I have encountered the bruins as close as being in my garden, or sleeping outside the chicken house on a sunny day. Truth be told, black bears are more scared of you than you are of them, and I have watched at least 75 of the south end of black bears fleeing the glimpse of my approach in the bush and on gravel roads. I may sound cavalier about bears, but be assured, I have lived with them and watched them for many years. Be cautious, make any noise you wish, and they will be gone before you arrive. Under no circumstances try to approach a woods cache quietly. Startling a bear is the last thing you may wish you had ever done. JMHO
  6. Search on ebay for "serial to usb adapter" You will come up over 100 listings at any one time, and at least 5 of them will be listed as Garmin. I bought 2 at 99 cents each, plus 5 bucks shipping.
  7. Having been a divemaster for years, I would like to make a suggestion or two here. #1, when testing, ensure that the temperature of the air in the container is warmer than the water in which it will be immersed. The additional contraction inside the container will pull in as it cools and further verify your test. #2, Test in a small container of water so only the lid or access is immersed, and allow the container to be heated and cooled by the varying sun conditions. Many caches fail because of being exposed to rain, and having the heating and cooling of the subsequent sun cause pressure differentials
  8. Monterry has brought up a very valid subject. I am curious whether this is a phenomenon strictly applying to just our area, or whether it is a global problem. Recently, a spree occurred here where not only Monterry's caches, but mine and a few other owner's were hunted, logged, and either not replaced properly, or just tossed. Some of these were very ingenious level 3-4.5 caches which took the owners many hours of work to place, and it is disheartening to have to spend even more hours doing maintenance on all your caches just to re-hide or replace them.
  9. Check Wally World in the winter. In the hockey stick section, I found camo hockey tape, and it works amazingly well on micros. Problem is, I can't find that hockey tape in the summer, and I've run out.
  10. I've lost many pens, sunglasses and gallons of sweat, but the worst was a $200 watch. Teh band was irritating me with all the sweating, so I took it off and put it in my shirt pocket while doing a hiking cache. Got back to the truck, decided to check the time, and it just wasn't there!!! Oh, well, left a note on the cache log, but never heard from anyone.
  11. I used to think that Thanksgiving was the best time, but with global warming, or whatever, it seems that the colours around home (Sundridge) are already done and gone by then.
  12. I own an old Magellan 310gps, and when it quit working, I e-mailed tech support. The tech replied with a fix within two minutes, and I was up and running within an hour. I found support to be amazing. By the way, my dog chewed the unit to shreds a few hours later, and it still works. I just had to silicone the tooth marks to make it waterprood again. I haven't tried the E-trex yet but that may be my next purchase due to pricing. P.S., beefsquad, if you took the 315 out of the closet and "blew it off" then the same fix applies to you as did my 310. go to magellan.com and post support for the fix. It works.
