  1. Thanks Thrak. I was sure that there was something listed. I appreciate your help.
  2. Yes I understand what you are saying and there is an email to send to Garmin regarding rebates, but I thought someone gave a site to check your rebate online. Anyway, no big deal, just wondered since I saw the thread on that and went back looking for it but cannot find it. Thanks
  3. Does anyone remember what was said regarding knowing if your Garmin rebate was approved and a notice given by them? I remember something a couple of weeks ago of someone mentioning about some site to goto and find out if your rebate application was approved or not. I think it was in connection with something else perhaps even another topic, but quite often a thread will get mixed up a bit with people just like me who kinda randomly ask a dumb question. So I'm making a new topic of it to find out. Hope anyone knows what I'm talkin' about.
  4. The only software you really need for day to day routing is CN8. Unless you want Topo software or you are into caching, then you might want something to use for downloading caches to your GPS otherwise you would be good to go. That's all I use. I'm not huge into caching so I usually just manually input the local cache's since that is part of the fun of caching.................besides actually finding the cache. Since you mention that you have a motorcycle, you might check out the Garmin bicycle adaptor or even better look at RAM mounts. I actually use both kinds and have good luck with both. Though I ride a bicycle for touring as well as my car, I have both in Garmin mounts. I also converted my old Magellan mount from RAM to the Garmin 60C.. series and that should get you started. If REI do not carry the RAM mounts, check out http://www.ram-mount.com. Actually I've had good success with ordering from http://www.gpscity.com if you can't get them from REI.
  5. Compare Map60Cx to Venture Cx? No comparison. Get the 60Cx with the Sirf3 chip. I used a Legend C (Venture Cx) in Mexico doing some cache's and it continually lost signal, both in the bus and in or near buildings. I took it instead of my Map60CS and figured that both have the same problem holding a satellite in tree cover or any cover. I just bought the Map60Cx without the electronic compass and like it much better. With $50 rebate right now, the price becomes much more affordable. The 60Cx is definitely a step up from the Venture. Both use the same mapping program and do autorouting similarly. The screen on the 60Cx is much bigger than the Venture/Legend series. If you are autorouting in the car or bike, this is a huge difference for visibility. Do this. Using Garmins own measurements, draw on a piece of paper the size of the screen measurements that they give and compare them. Big difference in favour of the Map60Cx. Also, I get signal stength even in my basement for a short time and this far exceeds the expectations of the smaller units. The smaller units are nice since they fit the hand better and into a bag or case better but the step up to the Map60Cx is far and away the best choice. The antenna hasn't been upgraded in the Legend/Venture series but the colour screen is definitely bonus, but still, spend a few bucks more and get the 60Cx and you won't regret it.
  6. Mine is the same as the cable for my Canon and my Sony digital camera's. Quite common. As stated above, take your GPSr with you and try a cable with it. Make sure it has the metal outer covering where it fits your GPS. I've got others from my Sansa MP3 players as well so it is very common.
  7. Ok: Installed the 1 Gb card and installed most of Canada plus the North Eastern US plus Forida on the card. Actually only took up 409 mb. It is up and running OK. The 512 mb card shows nothing when I put in into my card reader. I think that it is defective or something. It shows nothing at all and when placed into my 60Cx just shows a blank screen with the word "reading" in a square. I am using the Adapter with it and into an Optex 5 in 1 USB reader and the card is not reading so it must be defective. Thanks for your help. I decided to download directly to my GPS and it took an hour total for the maps to download. I was not sure about downloading to my USB reader with the card installed since I felt that it would be looking for my GPS ID number as usual. Is it easy to download directly to the card? Thanks for your help Munin.
  8. OK now, I have the 1 Gb card installed and the basemap is showing. This card definitely says on the card that it is Micro SD and the 512 mb card packaging says that it is MicroSD, but the card itself says it is a 512 mb TransFlash Card not MicroSD. When I compare the part number on the face of the 512 mb card, the code is SDQCJP-512 mb but the card package says it is SDSDQ-512-A10M. Both cards have exactly the same packaging saying microSD/TransFlash compatible, but the adaptor on the 512 says TransFlash Adapter whereas the 1 Gb one says microSD/Transflash Adapter. The code on the 1 Gb is SDSDQ-1024-A10M so you would think that both units are the same until you actually look at the code on the card itself. Both cards appear to be exact matches other than the code and the fact that the 512 mb card does not seem to associate with the 60Cx basemap. Anyone else have this problem?
  9. OK, I've got a question for those of you that have already new Transflash cards. I purchased both a SanDisk Transflash 512mb plus now I received the 1 Gb TransFlash Card or Micro SD. My question is : Is the basemap on the installed 64mb card. When I install the new Micro SD card, I get a blank screen with the word Drawing in a square box. I have waited a considerable time to see if anything happens and nothing does. I assumed that the basemap was on the internal memory and then when you install the card, then any new mapping gets installed there. So my question then is "Do I have to install my Navigator 8 onto the card first which will then get me my routing software" or how if possible do you use the unit just to see my location in North America while using my new 512mb or 1 Gb SanDisk Micro SD card? It seems to me that the unit is card dependent and that the basemap is on the installed 64mb card that comes from the factory.
  10. I ran a comparison test in June, for about 3 weeks using a Magellan 500 vs my Garmin GPSMap60CS. Quite frankly, I do not think that you can compare these units against one another. If you compare the Legend Cx to the Magellan 500, I think you have a fair comparison since both units are similar size, weight and functions. The reason there is $200 difference when comparing the 60Cx or 60CSx is that the Garmin has more to it, but don't take anything away from the Magellan because if you rate the Magellan 500 to the Legend Cx then I might give the nod to Magellan and this might be a very fair comparison. The tiny buttons are my biggest complaint. Rechargeable batteries on the Magellan are a non factor since it seems everyone is getting around 15 hours to a charge. If camping then you would need an extra battery pack or the new battery clip for NIMH batteries for the Magellan. The Magellan's antennae is quite good for reception and would compare favourably to the Garmin 60Cx series for holding satellites, but the screen is really much smaller and the tiny buttons are my complaint. Point in favour is that the backlight is always on in dim view which means that you can walk into a dark place and without fumbling around you can still view your map, so considering that there is always a backlight on, you do get very decent battery life. Another point. The Garmin 60 series have lighted buttons for night use and that is really bonus, even when using the unit in the cradle for navigating etc, you can find the proper button immediately. So if you then compare the Legend Cx to the Magellan 500 then price for price and feature for feature the comparison will be close with my nod going to the Magellan. Just a personal view and I have tried to be unbiased as much as possible since I have owned both Magellan and Garmin and had fun with both. I might add though that the new 60Cx series will blow away the old C or CS for locking onto satellites and holding them, especially when you use the most recent updates.
  11. What was the price? I was looking to get it there if I still go with the 60Cx and sometime they have rebates and was wondering if I should check every week to see if they offer a rebate for it. It was $449 CAD. Delivered the next day by 5 o'clock from Montreal.
  12. Just bought my 60Cx last week from Costco.ca and had 2.9 and 2.6 respectively. Updated right away to 3.0 and 2.7 . I was surprised that the unit was up to date.
  13. Don't listen to all the nonsense. Get the "x" series. I have a 60CS and it looses signal under the slightest canopy. Since I was using it with the compass turned off and not using the altimeter, last week I decided to get the Cx, and I am more than pleased with it. Reception even in my basement although quite limited, it works almost anywhere in the house and car unlike it's predecessor.
  14. I am not going to pick sides Garmin vs Magellan. I have a Garmin GPSMap 60CS and I also have a Magellan Explorist 500 that I am trying out. I personally prefer colour but I also have compared the two units and here are my findings. Garmin gets a lock much faster than the Magellan. I put them both on and drive more than 1 km before the Magellan finally gets a lock. Having said that, if I take both units inside of my house, just inside the front door, the Garmin loses satellites within 2 minutes, while the Magellan stays on. That is where the new xSeries of Garmins especially the Map60Cx or CSx would be preferred. There just are not enough screens on the Magellan. It seems too easy that you only have 4 screens to scroll through and you can't do much more. The Garmin on the other hand, has sometimes too deep a menu system for newbies, and not so frequent users, that it can take a while to do something, but Garmins win this one with much more to look at. I don't like the rechargeable battery, but having said that , I have gotten 14 to 16 hours of life from the Magellan 500. I understand that replacement batteries are available, but I have not found one where I live, so I would be looking at ordering from Magellan other than a new device out that uses 3 AAA batteries in place of the rechargeables. Again, I have not found it in Canada but the US and other posts indicate huge shipping - duty fees. I find the Garmin screen much brighter than the Magellan plus being about 1/2 inch longer, but having said that I finally do like the fact that the Magellan always has a low light on, so that when I go out at night or in dim light, I do not have to turn on the light, but when I do, it is really bright. I personally like Garmin's software over Magellan's. I did own a Magellan Meridian Gold previously, and was not particularly impressed, but did use DirectRoute V1 on it when it became available. I also find the little buttons on the Magellan somewhat annoying, but still useable. I could probably go on, but reading other posts containing problems with charging and the like, I have made up my mind that the Magellan is going back. I did not open the new Direct Route software and I did give the unit a try because of the pricing. I can still keep it and get $50 bucks back from Magellan to make my cost $269 Can which is cheap for a colour unit. The best part of the Magellan for me is the fact that I can lock onto my satellites longer than the older Garmin C or CS models, but I am buying a new GPSMAP60Cx model in fact I just ordered it today because I found that using the units in the daylight the Garmin is brighter and I like the way the screen changes colour at sunset. I also found that I do not like the electronic compass in the Garmins but do prefer the one in the Magellan and the Garmin GPSMAP60Cx better. It is a case of living with what you buy, and if you have a pricepoint, then you live with it and dream about the unit you could not afford. What's a few bucks to make sure that you get what makes you happy. I do think that you only get what you pay for, and so you have to decide for yourself if this is what you are happy with, never mind the arguments of Garmin vs Magellan.
  15. Try this. It is in Alberta, Canada. http://www.gpscity.ca/item-magellan-usa-di...msdirectusa.htm Sorry for my last post. Gotta figure out how to reply here.
  16. Have owned a Magellan Meridian Gold for about 4 years. Also own a Garmin GPSMAP60cs for a year now. Want a GPSMap60Cx...........don't use the altimeter but want more mapping room.
  17. I think that the whole conversation re: your question has gotten out of hand. I own a GPSMAP 60CS and have also been using a Legend C for a month and find very little diffence in them. I have City Select V6 installed on the 60CS so I can navigate on my "bicycle" around southern Ontario with very little problem, but I just spent time geocaching in Mexico using a Legend C with no problem and no software other than the basemap. The legend is smaller and the bicycle clamp is cheap and the unit will not bounce around as much on your bike as the 60CS does. Both units are good and it is what you can afford. In Toronto go to "Europe Bound" or http://www.europebound.com and check them out and find their locations. You can buy either model at a competitive price as GPSCity or GPSCentral or Radioworld. One question that was not asked or inferred by you was whether you wanted to install street software, and then you can have it all with geocaching and autorouting. Oh yes, they have the new models the Legend Cx and the GPSMAP 60Cx or 60CSx also.
  18. I have been using the original Mapsend DirectRoute on my Magellan Meridian Gold for a couple of years now. My product code is #980654-01. I see from other posts that a version 3 or product code 980654-03 is available. Does anyone know if this will work on the Meridian series as well as the new Explorist series? Thanks
  19. Just followed the advice of ScottandGinny and here's what mine says except mine was shown as Mapsend Configuration settings since I used "tiles" to view it (shows a page with a gear in it) under the "view" menu of "My computer" at the Mapsend folder. Mine does not have an .ini file, but is shown as a configuration file. [DEVICE_DEFAULTS] Com_Port=1 Baud_rate=4800 Memory_Size=62000 Conv_Maximum_Number_of_Regions=9 Maximum_Number_of_Regions=9 Conv_Memory_Size=16384 Write_Export_Log=0 Write_GPS_Log=0 Write_upload_Log=0 UploadDevice=6 MMC_NAME=detail00.img Since I have a 128 mb SD card, a 256mb SD card, and a 64mb card filled here is my thought. As I understand it, the regions are in 62mb blocks, and I have the whole of Canada in a series of 62mb blocks on my 256mb card, so that I can go anywhere in Canada and bring up a map of the area and just use one SD card to go anywhere. Hope this helps.
  20. You don't need to buy from Magellan. Any name brand secure digital card will work. I use mostly Sandisk cards. A 256 card will give lots and lots of coverage in 64 mb blocks. If you can buy a 512 mb card cheaper, then do it. None of this means a thing unless you use mapping software. If not, then the 16 mb card that came with the unit will store your waypoints etc.
  21. Thank you Sputnik 57. Just a simple answer was what I wanted. Thanks Neo Geo for the input as well. I have a 60Cs and was wondering about getting the 60Csx, and nobody here seems to know anything about the new x series. Thanks to all for bearing with me.
  22. I don't want to belabour the point, but what is a "micro SD card". I have SD cards in my Palm Pilot and in my Magellan Gold Meridian and in my MP3 player. Will these work? If not, then I have never seen a "micro SD card anywhere" and don't know what it is, and I was out looking today and there are SD cards in 128, 256, 512, 1 gig and I hear 2 gi but nobody knows what "micro SD cards" are.
  23. It is a "Micro SD" card. It is not a proprietary card. AFAIK the biggest available are 512 mb, but 1 and 2 gig cards are supposed to be forthcoming.
  24. Browsing the literature on the new x series of Garmin units talks about the new memory card. I just want to know if it is a "Garmin" card or a Secure Digital Card. In other words, can you use any SD card in the unit or does it have to be a "priority" Garmin Card which appear to be sold in 128 mb and I think it was 256 mb.
