  1. Does anyone know if this phone has an actual GPS chip or just uses cellular calculation? Thanks Thinking about changing cell carriers and looking at the options.
  2. You sure do! And if memory serves me default is "on" Though, certainly with the iPhone it is easy to switch off. I think the problem is people just head off without ever checking the settings on their phones... I know one cacher who uses an iPhone. I have sent that cacher a question about this. I haven't received a reply. Will be interesting to learn if it is part of the initial setup. If not, shame on you GS.
  3. So, if I am reading this correctly, the smartphone apps automatically log any trackable in your inventory as visiting. I assume the user found the cache and didn't log a note nor dnf. In addition, in some apps the log is automatic by default and cannot be defeated. If it can be defeated, it is not down to the trackable level. One would think that GS would have it as part of their license agreement that this type of behavior would not be allowed. Of course, it does depend on the holder actually looking at the TO's wants. Do I have this right?
  4. Had to look this one up. I can't answer your question directly. Have you downloaded the manual? http://www.lidl-service.com/cps/rde/xchg/SID-83255023-A64997C8/lsp/hs.xsl/product.html?id=50589380&title=Outdoor+Handheld+GPS+Unit&count=1 My gpsrs only came with quick start quides. They are not Lidl brand, however.
  5. What about COs that up and die? Will we eventually have to provide a copy of our wills to prove the caches will be dealt with by the heirs? Will cachers older than a certain age not be able to publish caches? I wonder how many serious COs even have geocaching mentioned in their last will and testament. Been something I've been thinking about. I see many posts about giving back. If, over time, the publishing requirements become so onerous, many will not.
  6. I first learned of geocaching because I had KLR650. It was mentioned in a forum I read. Sadly, at the time, it was rather expensive to get into and there weren't many caches around here. We really didn't need another reason to go out riding. Fast forward, we have a motorcycle but it ain't the same as the Killer. I miss the Killer. Anyhow, nowadays we use the cachemobile, a Forester. So, no, we don't currently cache and bike. Just didn't want there to be no replies to your question. Happy Caching!
  7. I'm not interested in challenge caches in general. We will complete a couple this year or next, by normal caching. Whether I try to claim them will just depend if it can be done easily. Actually, just geocaching has a negative impact on the environment, just as every other activity of us bipeds. As an outdoor recreational activity, it has a less negative impact, in my opinion, than many other things one may do.
  8. I don't have much to add to what has already been written. For a while now, we leave and don't take. Usually leave a matchbox vehicle, an led flashlight or 2-3 carabiners. The only item I want to retrieve and keep would be a wood something that is not a TB or attached to a TB. We typically don't find swag that is worth bothering with.
  9. Would the reverse work? I've been wondering about the puppet accounts collecting souvenirs then the account gets locked. Could someone save the souvenir then use this method to post on their profile? Personally, I don't care about the souvenirs.
  10. Since it is only five bucks, I'm just going to let all of them go. Over time, I suspect they will all disappear. I have one in a cache in OR where the cache has gone missing. Another, a cacher kept for a while then took it to HI. I waste more money each day then I have invested in trackables. Thanks to all for letting me see I need to be rational about this. BP
  11. I have read quite a few forum posts on this topic but I haven't found an answer to my specific question. I have a TB that was grabbed by a user from the cache I originally dropped it. Oddly, the user didn't log the cache at all. The user has 13 finds. The user has had the TB for nearly two months. I messaged the user to ask of their intention for the TB. I have not received a reply. I'll wait for maybe four months more. Let's say I decide to release a replacement. Is it good form to grab the original from that user? Or will they just grab it back when the finally get around to dropping it? Or should I just forget about it? I have other questions about TBs but not now. Thanks for any replies, BP
  12. Are you using an SD card? I ask because, for example, I have a file with 945 caches on the SD card. Say it was the last file open when I shut the unit down. Then I hookup to the PC and open the SD card. Then I shut the unit down, prior to disconnecting the cable, the unit goes through the "saving file in GPX format" or something. Well, it is saving the file to the internal drive but only 630 caches show when that file is opened. I have never used the unit without an SD card so I'm not sure what the behavior would be without one. If you opened the file from the internal drive, I assume the unit would overwrite that file with its new copy. Maybe?
  13. I may be wrong but I thought the OP was doing something like myself. My PQs typically don't include multis or unknowns. The other day I thought I might want to have at least one of each in my found list. So instead of changing my PQ or doing a new one, I just found a couple of caches nearby that seemed easy enough and used the single cache - send to gps. That is where I had trouble using FF but IE worked. I might see if Chrome will work for both DeLorme and Garmin. That would be convenient should I desire to do single cache downloads.
  14. Thanks, this is the type of information for which I am searching. As one is navigating does the auto gps show the various caches along your route?
  15. We use an etrex 10 and PN60 to geocache. We use the PN60 for driving directions as well. The maps in the PN60 are out of date, somewhat. Been thinking of getting a driving gps, such as the Garmin Nuvi 50LM to load caches and get the driving directions there then using the handhelds for the off-road stuff. Academy has the 50LM for 90 right now. Lifetime map updates. Sorta seems like a no brainer but I suspect I am missing something. I have never used a driving gps. I understand I can get the caches in the 50 as POIs if nothing else, using GSAK. Am I missing something? Is this a valid idea? Thanks
  16. This can be done with hand tools but much easier with a table saw and router. Rip a piece of wood down to 1" x 1" plus the width of your rip blade kerf and length of your choosing. Rip this piece in half along the widest side. Plow out the center with a dado set or router bit. Leave whichever end you want closed or fill later. Glue up the two halves with the grain matching. Round over the shaft until you are left with a round profile. It can be sanded to look like it was properly turned on a lathe. Or, use this method to make a cache container, except use pins and not glue.
  17. I was going to start a new thread but this one seems appropriate. We don't have many Earthcaches around here in Central Arkansas. We have been near two when hunting traditionals. The first one we didn't attempt because half of the questions appeared to focus on our knowledge and prowess using our gpsr and not geology. The second we spent some time gathering answers until we saw it required a visit to another site and the picture be made there. And yes, it too required using the gpsr to do something I don't know how to do. Anyway, we really didn't have time to go to another site to answer the last question and make a photo. So far, we don't have an Earthcache find. Perhaps one day. My question, why go into the gpsr tech with your questions? Altitudes, waypoint projections, starting and ending coords, average angle of decline and things of that nature. How does requiring such to log a find improve the learning of geology?
  18. I understand modern graphic sub-systems know the current state of the display. Only those pixels that need changing are updated whenever a refresh occurs. Whether it is seconds or fractions thereof. I wonder about this Earl. No mention of geocaching nor the release of a SDK. Regular Android apps would need to be aware of the hardware and communicate with it to work properly. This isn't a phone. Right now its a 3d printed prototype. See what happens.
  19. We, sp and I, haven't read all the posts nor will we. However, this discussion has moved us to make a decision. Every day we go out caching, we are going to award a favorite point for our favorite cache of the day. If that is determined to be so wrong that we are banned for life, well...I'll just join as a new user and sp and I will go on as before.
  20. The responses I am reading are not logical. Unless you, the found it logger, actually found the cache, you didn't find it. Simple. It doesn't matter if you are 10 feet or 10 miles away. The question is ethics. If you feel it is ethical to claim to have done something you didn't actually do, then do it. It don't matter to me...
  21. Gee, SP and I are sorta new at this. I started on my own and she quickly joined. We most always go together. I find it boring now to go alone. I guess we are a team. I log the find, no matter who makes the actual find. She does not have an account so there are not two finds logged. Are we a team? Should I not take credit for her finds? Does it matter to anyone but us? I've felt it didn't matter. Is the issue that more than one "found it" is logged when only "found it" happened? If so, who cares? On the other hand, I have gotten to dislike power trail/series. We don't intend to hunt them. All they do is push out other caches so far down it takes much scrolling to find the others. I wish there was an easy way to ignore series caches...
  22. The 60 is only my 2nd gpsr, so I am not any kind of expert. I trust others with more experience will chime in. My first, which spwilldo uses, was the eTrex 10. I've had the 60 about 1 year. I like it for geocaching, and since it has turn-by-turn, for navigating to caches. The battery life seems just fine, as good as the eTrex, it seems. It appears accurate. I think I need to calibrate it, as the electronic compass doesn't behave as it should but I just haven't gotten around to that. The fact that it uses regular SD cards is a plus, in my opinion. And, as new, it came with maps and software to use on a PC. Though cache register no longer works, it is no big deal to move gpx files to it. I do wish the screen was larger and it can be hard to read in certain light. In my opinion, it can take more button presses to do things than it should but one learns to deal with that. There is a lot one can say about one unit or another but this is all for now. Overall, I am happy with mine and think it is a fine value. bp
  23. Thanks for the replies. Exporting only the fields I need to use as a gpx geocache file would be my preference. Exporting as a gpx waypoint file will work. Having a little trouble with syntax. The options for the e10 are limited. For the field that displays as the note field one can enter criteria. However, if one enters- %container %difficulty %terrain It shows up on the e10 as- microtainer 1ficulty 1.5rain Odd it would strip the first three characters from the field name and append the remainder to the field value. It can be read, for sure, just not ideal. Anyway, I tried gpsBabel and GSAK using a loc file and the results were not satisfactory. Perhaps I will try the GSAK forums if nobody has some help here. Thanks
  24. We mostly use a PN-60 but my navigator uses the e10. Been looking at trying to load more files onto the 10 so we don't have to keep swapping files with a travel laptop. Been messing around with GSAK and reading their forums but haven't found a somewhat simple way to squeeze out extra text we don't need since we have the PN. So, I have found I can create a rather large database and export it as a waypoint file. I can change some of the fields that show up in the waypoint manager in the e10. I am trying to get beyond the limits of the e10's geocache capacity limit, which seems to be around 500 or so. I thought I could do a custom query and only export those fields I choose to make a normal gpx geocache file. I am finding I need to export as a waypoint file. The waypoint may work okay but I am having trouble with the note field displayed on the e10. I can combine fields in the dialog but, for example, the difficulty will show up as 1ficulty. Anyway, I'd rather the file be a geocache file with certain information eliminated as opposed to a waypoint file. Am I making sense? Any help? Thanks.
