  1. facebook is public or can be private, it all depends on how you set up your account with the privacy settings. To answer the former question, why do you come on here? When you can just email other Geocachers with your points and views!! It doesn't quite work does it? Ahaaah, now I get yer and completely understand. Thanks HH.
  2. The thing I dont get though (because I have no knowledge and dont understand it), is why not just email friends and family? Why is Facebook better than email? Is Facebook public or have I got that wrong?
  3. This is very cheeky but I'm just throwing this back out for the last time . There has been a great response (as events go these days) for this and there has been some updates on the page which may or may not provoke some more 'Will Attend's'. Thanks for looking .
  4. We weren’t involved then but joined in the fun 3 years later. When we first started, it was all consuming and we spent every bit of spare time caching or in preparation for a trip. Back then, we were in competition with another cacher – now, we couldn’t be less interested in making it a personal challenge/chore and the numbers game has well and truly dropped off our radar. We would much rather complete 1 well thought out multi than 10 film pots at the bases of posts. We do still occasionally complete a series but this is always now picked for location rather than the size of the haul.
  5. I've got an extensive list of souvenirs, here's a snapshot.... Nettle rash Bee stings Concussion Scratches Cuts Bruises Wasp Stings Mosquito Bites Injuries to pride Heat stroke (that's an old one)
  6. Nothing on GC as far as I can see. Intriguing though, surely this is advertising a commercial venture ? Could be why they haven't been published, IF they've been submitted for review... They must have borrowed their researcher from the Cra* hoppers debacle methinks.

  8. Thanks J and thanks for the link. It did start out as a CITO but the Council required lots of form filling, risk assessments and even the involvement of the Fire and Rescue Services , so we thought better of it. As it says on the cache page though, we will be clearing rubbish as we go, so it’s a bit of a closet CITO too. Shame you can’t make it but I'm sure your Earth Cache will get a few extra logs on the day. We’ve had a really good response so far, I'm dead chuffed
  9. I’m not sure we have established that its not theft but if it is, I’m vastly content to (occasionally) be labelled a pilferer in this instance. There are many things in Geoworld that are considered good practice but unfortunately, far fewer practitioners of the ethos. Personally, as I have said, I would only ever do it if I thought the (re)placement worthy of my efforts. On the up-side, if it makes you happy to restore/replace boxes, I’m reasonably confident you will never be banged up or chastised for doing so .
  10. I’ve just come across this cache bash - GC4A44E what a brilliant idea. I happen to know the organisers and they are wonderful people, I do hope they get a good turn out. We are definitely going to attend because amongst trads, a multi and an Earth Cache, there is also a Wherigo and we haven’t completed one yet. Just imagine, 5 different cache types at one location......Manna from heaven.
  11. PRISONER NUMBER 573200 – HOLLOWAY CRIMINAL CHARGE – CROSS-ROADER KEISTER-CACHER PUNISHMENT - DOIN’ 6 MONTHS BIRD FOR CACHE BEEF Gotta be quick here, the snouts are snoopin outside and it’s Yard Out in a mo. I got a few good scores from the caches I retrieved after archival. I use the micro lid I retrieved as a cap on my Dice Shaker. The other haul was just a wet logbook but I tear strips off that to use as karzee roll when the Hacks don’t give me any. Hopin’ to get jam roll any day now. Gotta go, Yard Out time.
  12. So, would any of you surrender your allegiance to rival factions and return to the Dark Side if GS relaxed the moderating? May be if some Facebook-esque attributes were added too? Would this ever happen and if so, would it be in GS's interests to have you all back or doesn't it matter? I'm just curious you see. My concern is, we may lose this facility if we don't use it. Inevitable?
  13. I had overlooked that possibility, may be due to the fact I have never even looked at Twitter never mind have an account. Please accept my apologies. No need to apologise, I understand how it may have been misconstrued . On facebook I could have clicked 'like' for this post and you would have known I liked what you said without having to do another message. But I wanted to! Thanks for the illustration though. I’ve seen people write, 'Like' and often pondered its origins.

  15. Its a Facebook/Twitter combo and is not meant to be derisory. I could not (or have not) said I don't like FB. It would be inaccurate for me to do so, as I have no knowledge of it. This is the reason for the Thread. As for me being antiquated and not moving with the times, you are absolutely right but strangely, I'm cock-a-hoop with that It's good to hear all the different viewpoints on it all though, that's what I was after. Thanks.
  16. Ok MrsB, thanks for that. Can you tell me though (because its all a bit, 'smoke and mirrors' to me) what makes these other sites more appealing? I just think its a shame that there seems to be so much Tumbleweed on here now. Can GC do anything to make this site more appealing or has it had its day?
  17. During a conversation with a well known and respected cacher the other day, we agreed that this forum seems to be declining quite markedly in participation. He suggested that many had deflected to Facetwit or similar. Whilst I don't know for certain that this be the case, I suspect he may be right. Both he and I do not go on these other communication sites and I am reasonably confident we never will. I was just wondering do most of you dip in and out of the various forums or do you only post on/view this site?
  18. Which is exactly why the idea of volunteers 'helping out reviewers' would never fly. From a legal POV the cache remains the property and responsibility of the CO - even after it has been abandoned and left to rot. If another cacher even with the very best of intentions goes and removes the rubbish they do so without any endorsement or support from GS or its agents. I'm not a lawyer but I always thought that there is a legal concept of property being considered to be abandoned and therefore in a state where removing it and disposing of it would not be unlawful. I'm just not sure what criteria would need to be met for property to be considered abandoned as opposed to left behind for later retrieval. Presumably litter blowing in the street is considered abandoned property and fair game to be removed and destroyed. What legal definition differentiates between something like a sandwich box under a fallen tree and something like an empty beer bottle under a fallen tree could be interesting. When I hide a cache in the woods, it was placed for this hobby and will be removed when it no longer serves it's purpose. If a non-cacher finds it and removes it, it'll tick me off a bit, but they aren't playing the game. Doesn't really matter if they know of it. If a cacher, knowing of the game and recognizing the container as a cache in play removes it, they would be intentionally depriving me of my property. - I would consider that theft. You wouldn't consider it as theft if you had left the game months ago and moved onto another hobby. You wouldn't know or care that someone had removed your container. What we are talking about here is caches which have fallen into disrepair or are missing altogether and the CO hasn't logged on, hasn't posted any updates or notes, has moved on to scuba diving, is too ill or has other commitments to look after the caches they placed. The other (and not totally exhaustive) reason.....'Geo what'? 'Oh yeah, I remember that, I found a plastic box once and then went and threw one out myself. Dunno what ever happened to it, don't care really, I'm too busy counting slugs now'.
  19. I would only ever remove a cache if I was confident that I could commit to a repair which would retain as many of the original components as possible and also restore the cache to the site within a few hours. This scenario has only ever materialised once in 7 years. The cache in question was 11 years old, in a great location and was one of our first finds so we felt it was important to preserve and protect it. After a few NM's were posted, we were fearful that sooner or later, someone would post a NA and with no owner intervention probable, that would’ve been the end of the cache. It was/is rarely visited so we felt safe to remove the cache for a few hours. Prior to (and during) the NM’s being posted on the cache, we had been trying to adopt it from the owner and eventually we were successful; the cache is now in our care. I have posted several NA’s on caches but now always visit the location shortly after archival, to attempt to retrieve the litter. I may not have endorsement or support from GS or its agents but I do have the support from my concience and gratitude of nature. I'll take the risk. Personally, unless the cache is historically important or unique in some other way (providing geo-litter is removed), I would allow the unloved be lain to rest in order for new life to thrive.
  20. It was slow last night too. we gave up trying to log some of our long awaited and grossly embarrassing back-catalogue of logs . On the up-side, we turned to the bottle instead.....Hic. Did I mention that this was ongoing?
  21. Not sure. I got passed a rare one at a cache bash a few years ago and everyone was 'OOOOOHING' & 'AHHHHING' but I didnt have a scooby what all the fuss was about becuse we dont do bugs or coins. The others at the bash were flabberghasted because I wasnt!!!
  22. Ive just had a look, the Devils Dyke series has been very well favourited. It looks like you have just highlighted the destination for our camping trip at the end of May. Thanks very much Mellers, it looks great .
  23. Do you mean to say it's not part of your caching kit??? Tsh Tsh. But for info it's DYB (Do Your Best) Happy caching everyone, but in groups of 9 or less please or should that be 8 or less? Oh NO - forced into making assumptions again! Oh flip, I wish I'd Ging Gang Goolied it now.
  24. Personally, some of our caches are found so infrequently these days, Id be happy to see logs from any group/s of people. After all, isn't that the whole point of setting them? Also, providing they weren't abusive, it wouldn't upset me in the slightest if children wrote a few daft things on the page As I understand it, part of being a Scout/Brownie/Guide is to participate in outdoor activities. In the old'n days, this may have involved collecting different types of leaves, counting slugs or identifying insects. Things have moved on a tad now though I'm afraid. Short of getting in touch with The Boy Scouts Association to voice your concerns, the only way of preventing the 'damage' would be to not entice these people to the area with cache/s in the first place. I'm sorry you have become 'rattled' about this but cant help feeling you are rattling unnecessarily. Unless the Scouts are pouring in by the bucket-load on a weekly basis and if the foliage/nature has been compromised, it will recover in no time. Edited to add... DIB, DIB, DIB - where's me woggle?
  25. Agreed. Years ago, we went to a bash and there was a large new series launched for the event. Approximately 25 people (including us) set out at the same time to complete the series. Some walked quicker than others and by the time we got to each cache, the whole group had been signed into the logbook by the FTF with a Team Name. There was no need for us to sign the cache or even look for it. Essentially, we ended up just being on a 'walk' and by the 3rd cache we had turned our GPS off. I suppose it did have the effect of minimising the damage to the area but to us, it also minimised the fun - Never again.
