  1. During Katrina, my family was given MRE's. When power came back on, there were extras. I do not want to sell them because that would be wrong for me to make a profit from them but they are getting closer to their "best use" date so I do not want them to go to waste. Anyone have any ideas of what I can do with these? I am in Charlotte, NC.
  2. I am really getting interested in the encrypted puzzles. How did they tripple encrypt this description? I promise I will not go solve it and run out and post a find :-)

  4. Nah, it's perfectly nice and on-topic too. 01010111 01101111 01110101 01101100 01100100 00100000 01111001 01101111 01110101 00100000 01101010 01110101 01110011 01110100 00100000 01101001 01101110 01110011 01110100 01100001 01101100 01101100 00100000 01101100 01100101 01100101 01110100 01101011 01100101 01111001 00101100 00100000 01110000 01100101 01101111 01110000 01101100 01100101 00111111 00100000 00100000 01001001 01110100 00100111 01110011 00100000 01110011 01101111 00100000 01101101 01110101 01100011 01101000 00100000 01101101 01101111 01110010 01100101 00100000 01100110 01110101 01101110 00101110 Oh, this looks fun... what is so "perfectly nice" about it? I am stumped.
  5. I am looking for the "grandfathers" of geocaches that are still active in some states. In NC, we have Octopus' Garden and folks just seem to KNOW that it is the oldest. Anyone know where I can find a list? Dumbunusedid a..k.a. Terri Thomas
  6. This is a new cache my BF and I placed and it is a difficult multistage. No one has found it yet but we have had a few DNF's and some folks asking for more clues. (One person sent an email saying they wanted more clues before they went out looking for it even the first time - because others have had trouble). It would be "interesting" to see who in the area is watching but definitely it is not a concern. just curious :-)
  7. As cache owner, I can see that a certain number of cachers are watching my cache. Can I tell who they are? (cache id's, not personal information).
  8. I am using Magellan's Geocache Manager software that came with the Explorist on CD. I have only had the 400 for about a month. My fella traded me my 4 month old Explorist 100 for this brand new 400 for my birthday - neat trade! I have not tried using any other software.
  9. I create a pocket query on geocaching.com. I then copy the *.gpx file to my gps. I select GoTo and it gives me an option of selecting "points of interest" or "geocache locations". I have not loaded the *.gpx file as my default. I navigate the directories and select my gpx file and then all of the geocaches are listed. I select the cache of choice. Usually when I go to the compass at this point, it would show the cross hairs around the perimeter of the compass indicating the direction. When I load the location from this *.gpx file, it does not give the cross hairs. If I go back to the gpx file and mark the cache found, there is then an icon on the compass.... I figure there is some default icon in the gpx file that is not recognized by the Explorist 400 but I do not know how to edit these entries...besides marking them all as found and there are other problems there.
  10. Normally, when tracking a destination using my "Go To" option, there is a small box with cross hairs that indicates the direction of the location. There is a sun or moon icon depending on the day and the cross hairs box. I then created a pocket query and loaded it into my Magellan Explorist 400. There is no box with cross hairs. If I mark the cache as found and then create a GoTo, it does have an icon. Anyone else experience this? Any quickie solutions/work-arounds?
  11. Granted I am a N00bie - just got my receiver at Christmas - but my fella and I both enjoy caching. At first, he was apprehensive. His ex was not a big outdoors kinda gal so they did not do much hiking and the sort. I am fortunate in that he likes to go with me but does not mind if I go by myself (if he is not available). We are dating long distance so that comes up a lot. At first I thought it would be nice if he was just willing to go with me and not be bored. We are now shopping for his own receiver. As a note, my younger sister came along with me a few times and she just got herself her own gps and they just ordered our Dad one because he is interested in hunting. I think that you have to set aside the "I know where I am going" comments, let everyone have a turn with the receiver (it is different to be looking at the screen and tracking versus walking behind someone who is following changing readings) and let everyone have a chance to find one. As a note, I am reading about the caching men and their wives, let's hear from the gals out there!
