  1. I could have up to 4 different kids with me any time I go geocaching so I do this: Thorvingtons-C (me), B(daughter) & J(son) if we 3 go out. I babysit 2 kids so they are honourary Thorvingtons and I'll put Thorvingtons-C, B, J and KN & CN or something to that effect. If it's just me geocaching I"ll just sign Thorvingtons-C. I don't think any one really cares who found it in the "team" or if it was just me but the kids like to see acknowledgement for their part of the search.
  2. Thorvingtons ~ it's a cross between my last name and my soon to be married name. Thorvingtons-C is me. Thorvingtons-B is my daughter. Thorvingtons-J is my son. I have yet to get my fiance hooked.
  3. Fantastic! thanks! Were you bored? or did the Search function start working?
  4. Thanks for the replies on my Q! We have already placed it in a new cache. I did go and edit my retrieval post for the TB and told them I hadn't realized it was for boy scouts. Oh well. Maybe boy scouts in this new town will find it!
  5. I admit I did this once or twice in my first 2 maybe 3 caches. I'm a newbie and it didn't really 'click' in my head until my 11 yr old son said something. Since then I have definately just left it or retrieved it and thought of it as a separate thing from swag. As for trading crap for something good, I think it's important to teach your kids the 'value' of things. J took a multi-use tool thing. He REALLY wanted it. That was fine but he didn't have anything worthwhile to trade so being the wonderful mom I am (hehhehe) I gave him a new roll of trail tape and an electronic timer to trade. The cache barely fit those two things. We were hoping that was an acceptable trade. I must remember to pick up some more 'expensive' swag items just in case we run into that problem again. When J took the multi-use tool thing we had just been to the local buck store and filled up on swag items. We never expected to come across something as cool as the multi-use tool thing! As for TB goals, how do you know that say one is just for Boy Scouts to retrieve and move along? We placed one yesterday only to find out that it was intended to visit with other boy scouts after we got back and logged the find. We had no idea when we found it.
  6. First Cache 12 pages (most are 'insert name here's' FIRST CACHE)
  7. I intend to put out some of my own caches but probably not for awhile. I really want to know the in's and out's of geocaching before I do. (not to mention the legalities of everything). My brain has already scoured my house for cache containers! I also need to read up and see where there are caches already hidden in my area. I haven't quite read them all yet.
  8. I'm a newbie and have logged 5 finds so far. I have found that some things would be very useful to carry with you at all times. What do YOU carry?? I think useful items are: -a hand towel to dry soggy caches -extra ziplock bags -extra pencils -extra batteries -a notebook to help me remember condition of caches and what I traded -a separate container or bag or something for TB's so they don't get lost in the shuffle of stuff -kleenex would have been useful today!! (This probably has been done before but the search feature is down.)
  9. I'm so addicted now that when I'm driving I'm looking all over the place imagining that there COULD be a cache hidden there! I stocked up on SWAG items and spent $30 and had to FORCE myself to stop buying.
  10. Very cool El Diablo! I have been admiring people's avatar's the past 2 days since I joined. Off I go to find my fave!........
  11. I've just started geocaching yesterday but I am HOPING HOPING HOPING to lose some weight!
  12. What's the purpose of a bug hotel? I thought they were MEANT to travel? (newbie here)
  13. Determination streak kicked in...found the one that should have been my first and went out and found another! I tuckered out the 2 year old truckin' through the woods. Very productive morning for me.
  14. I am 34. (newbie) Son is 11. (He seems to enjoy geocaching so far). Daughter is 6. (she needs to acquire some patience and a find before I can tell if she's going to stick with it) and I am hoping to drag along my fiance who is 33 someday.
  15. Addiction is right! And lesson learned regarding batteries.
  16. My 6 yr old daughter got a magazine subscription to a kid's magazine called KNOW. I was reading her first issue about 4 days ago and found an article on geocaching. It lead me to here! Needless to say I am so intrigued by this. I went yesterday to search for 2 caches. The first one I didn't find. I searched for 45 minutes and gave up. I headed to the second one and found it easily. That gave me the thrill of finding one to keep my determination up. I went back again last night with my kids J-11 yrs and B-6 yrs and we still couldn't find the first one. We then dropped off B at home and J and I went to search for a night time one. We got half way through, got the co-ordinates we needed but the GPS died and so did J's flashlight so we had to call it a night. Both J and I are now DETERMINED to find these caches and hopefully many more!! It was a great experience for both us and great exercise. I slept like a baby.
  17. I have 1 dog (shih tzu) named Snickers. She has not yet come geocaching with me as I have only gone once so far!
  18. I have lurked the past 2 days since I found the site; 1 because I couldn't post for 24 hours when I joined and 2 I am absorbing information and learning as much as I can before I take the kids out to try this. (Gotta look KNOWLEDGEABLE to your kids right? LOL) Wish us luck! The "Thorvingtons" D, C, J & B
