  1. If someone wanted to come up with something simple to maintain, I can add it to my website: www.skippyp.com I had already intended to make a landing page for a geocoin I was hoping to create, so this isn't far off.
  2. I second the cache size comment. As well as choosing caches that are 2/2 and lower. The larger cache sizes are often more fun for my kids because there's more than just a log to sign. But the size also Usually makes it easier to spot. Just last night I spent 10minutes confounded at a cache I knew was there. Turned out I had been staring right at it but the CO did a great job with camo tape on a tree with heavy buds and new growth. It just blended right in. and when you're looking for a cache that may only be an inch long (or these ridiculous magnetic nano's the size of a fingertip) that is camo'd, it can be a chalenge. If oyu have a good sized park nearby, there are probably several caches there. And since the spirit of the sport is in the amazong plaes it can take you, spend a day in the park enjoying the outdoors, maybe see some things you didn't notice before, and find a few caches to boost your experience points!
  3. To me the value of seeing a DNF as the CO (which, bte I am not, yet) is to know you've done a good job of hiding it. You want people to find it, but you also don't want it to be so obvious that there's no hunt. If everyone just says found it tftc I would wonder if it was too easy. of course that depends somewhat on the difficulty ratings.
  4. Good topic. Yesterday we were in a hurry for an event and stopped on the way to find a cache right outside the event building. Didn't find it and we were almost late, so we hit it up afterwards and found it. I entered a DNF while waiting in my seat for the event to begin and then changed it to Found after with the whole story in the log. If I had come back another day I wold have entered a second log entry. Today we went for one after several other successes, but there were potty issues, it started raining hard again, the area was a swamp, and between the whining and the low bloodsugar we got close to GZ but not close enough to effect a search. I'm waffling bc we were close enough that if we wanted poopy pants :0 or other problems we could have made the find. So I think I'll not log this one until we actually Look for it. It all seems like splitting hairs, but what matters is good friends, good times, a story to tell, and hopefully a find. I prefer to err on the side of logging DNFs, but this is one example where I'm going to let lack of effort and time win.
  5. "There's a kind of coin you can buy, sometimes called it a "noodle", but it's just an example. It has a basic tracking map, and these are typically released in the hundreds." what's the scoop on these 'noodles'? I'd love to investigate that. I've also considered a series of atma tags in which they are paired such that the finder could kep part and leave the second part in the next cache.... 'cept I don't know what after that!
  6. so far the walking pole from walmart has been my best investment.. good for spiderwebs, random branches and brush, checking ledges I can't reach. Second on my list is flushable saline wipes for face and hands to feel fresh on the drive home. And then tweezers.
  7. Fully recognizing that I'm fairly new to the sport, I'm totally lost on what people think is appropriate for swag. Used bottlecaps? a rock? advertisements? Frankly I'd prefer a TNLN than a penny. So call me a charter member of the SOBS (society of better swag) because if I were to advertise my business I'd at least do it with a bottle opener or pen or some other fun, useful thing. Today alone I CITO'd a 2 year old business magnet calendar, paper straw wrapper, some torn up stick-on letters, and a bent beer bottle cap. I also notice the number of trackables that are going missing. Am I just being a crab? I love seeing the little dinosaurs and other fun things for the kids- though I leave that stuff for the next cacher. Maybe I'm bad at choosing which caches to go after? I have a bunch of fun swag things I was going to start putting out, but if people are going to leave trash in trade, then I'll just be the SOB(s) who TNLN. So all kidding with the name aside, has this always been the way? If not, how can we up the ante on the swagstakes?
  8. boy is the compass on this thing a slug. Half the time is stops moving alltogether even when I'm rotating away from the heading. Any ideas? I've tried multiple profile and dashboard settings. I also find that no matter how I set the backlight timer, it dims after 15seconds. After 2 days of use I'm considering returning it... for $11 more I could have gotten a 62. as it is I have to revert back to my fone to double check the garmin!!!!
  9. From the oregon wiki board I learned that the additional dashboards I was asking about are available in navigation view but not in other views. For whatever that's worth. thanks for the feedback!
  10. sorry to revive an old gthread, but is one of the little dashboards your current lat-long? so you can see your current position relative to the target lat-long in realtime (instead of just navigating by compass)? thanks
  11. oooh, nice... hope it's online since the nearest one would cost me the price diff in gas!! thanks for the heads up
  12. Tired of playing the game with my android fone. Hoping someone out there has too many toys and is willing to offer a sweet deal.
  13. gardets with a digital compass do that. They require you to be moving so they can calculate based on satellites and ur movement. Magnetic compasses don't need that. I have the same problem with my EVO fone I currently use for caching
