  1. I find it amazing that the TPTB are so ignorant for the thousands of GPS users with handheld GPSrs. Handhelds were available long before the auto GPS units came on the market. What is the WSGA position on this? Did they do any input before this law was brought in? Up in BC, the same type of law has been dictated (as BC government is operating like an oligarchy.) The wording of the law is just as vague and contradictory. Help! Clear responsible laws are one thing, confusing, contradictory laws is another!
  2. A local WalMart has the 60CX as a Rollback at $228 (with USB cable) I have been using a eTrex Legend for 3 years, so I jumped at the chance and now I'm very happy!
  3. I have a travel bug in my inventory that was released into play back in 2007. Within a couple weeks, the bug went missing. There has not been any activity on this bug for 3 years. I have marked the bug as a MIA. I would like to use the tag number on a different travel bug, but I would like to start it at 0 miles just like a new bug. How do I do it? Do I have to delete the couple logs on the bug, then change the bug page, and send the new bug into the wild?
  4. "Household Items That Make Good Containers" Reading thru the posts made me consider the containers I have used over the years: - Wide-mouth Camping Thermos. You know, the 1/2 or 1 gallon size. Once you seal the holes in the lid (I use silicon sealant) these things are tough and seal well. - Small plastic-lined thermos. The kind built for kid's lunchbox with the plastic insides. Camo well and they last for years. - Waterproof match containers. I bought them at W*M at less than a buck apiece. Glued a strong hard drive magnet to it and a bit of camo paint. - Lock&Locks (or generic equivalent.) Sometimes you can find these for a buck or two. I have one out over 3 years and still doing well. - Nalgene bottles. The mouth can be a little small, but they are tough and camo well. Easy to find in thrift stores since the BPA scare. - Blood Glucose Test Strip canisters. As your diabetic friends - they probably have a box full. Tough plastic and well-sealing top. Some brands even have moisture crystals in the top lid. - Spice Bottles with wide-mouth lids. Not the most waterproof, but seem to stand up OK. Just need to replace every year or so. - Noxzema / Zinc Oxide salve containers. Need to be cleaned extra well to remove any remnant. Not the most waterproof, but you can glue a magnet inside and hide under something. - Prescription salve containers. I wish I could find more of these! Tough plastic with an excellent screw-top wide-mouth lid. - Peanut Butter container with plastic lid. My area is almost a desert, so moisture is not a problem. But the heat of summer is! Seems to do OK around here, but can become brittle. Just need to replace every now and then. - Hide-A-Key containers. Yeah! Yeah! I know, lame container. But hey, they fit in the strangest places! - OK, now for a strange one! Pepperchini / Black Olive food-service size plastic container! Found my first one behind a Greek restaurant. About 20 liters (5 gallons) with a screw-top lid! Outstanding size for a "Large" (Just have to figure where I'm going to hide this beast!) Now for containers that DO NOT work well: - Prescription pill bottles. Hey, they're not waterproof! Most have the child-resistant lid that does not seal. Why do cachers keep using them? Ugh, stop it! - PVC pipe. I saw with a note that I have one cache for several years made out of this. Yes, the lid sticks if someone overtightens it. Yes, they seem to attract moisture (but strangely, not mine. It's hidden inside something to shelter it from weather.) - Why do people like the Altoids tin? Every one I have found is rusty. Only the plastic bag around the log saves it from being sopping wet! - Metal cookie tins. Why? They rust easy and are not close to being waterproof! Just because the lid snaps on does not mean it will keep any moisture out! - I could list more that are used frequently but are uninspiring or just lazy. Thanks everyone for the great ideas! (Wow swizzle! Love the inner tube / film canister build!)
  5. Just got a few days off, so I am trying to attend. Anyone know of a good affordable campground nearby? (I could camp in my minivan, so a tent spot works for me.) I've been looking at motels but I'm not thrilled by what I has researched. Heck, I would even consider someone's driveway as long as the neighborhood is good. Where is the start/meeting spot on the 20th? (I would assume GCQAANH Whitman Webcam) As always, I'll looking for a ride as a navigator or ???\ (Need a good spot to park my van for the day) Fuzzywhip
  6. Just got back home last night. Great event! Thanks to everyone who attended and made the CCCM a great success! (Oh, and I attempted the Agates Earthcache on Sunday. Yes, the water was too high to get to the GZ. Tried a bit of digging about 250 feet away but didn't find anything. Will have to return in late summer when the water is low to try again)
  7. I stayed at the Motel 6 on Belmont St. $35.99 + tax for three nights. Clean room with double queen beds. Bathroom was reasonable (clean but needed a bit of repair.) Good water pressure and heat. For the price, a good basic place to stay.
  8. Greetings! Still looking for a navigator (and possible one other seat) for the CCCM Fuzzywhip
  9. I posted earlier this year about the solution to the blue lines / shutdown problem with the blue eTrex Legend... But lately, I've been having a different type of problem: I'm out caching somewhere and suddenly the GPSr is showing I'm over 1/2 mile away, when the unit was displaying correctly that I was only 100 feet away. If I watch the unit, the amount of distance can bounce all over the place (all wrong of course). I do not think it is a multipathing problem as this can happen even when I'm out in the open. What usually solves the problem is to shutdown and do a cold restart. Then the GPSr is display correctly again. (Quite embarrasing when I'm caching with my aunt with her eXplorist 100. I have to stop to restart my GPSr and she is laughing at me with her old unit)
  10. Stupid question but... at 7:15AM in the dark, are we all meeting at the first cache location (looks like a big parking lot next to the musuem), or at the event location across the street?
  11. Yowza! Doing Tri Cities solo was interesting, and I was able to find 69 on the day. With a navigator would have greatly helped. I'm looking forward to CCCM and I'm planning my holidays around it. (Actually, all the holiday trips revolve around caching, with everything else is an extra )
  12. Made a mistake - Date should be Oct30/09
  13. Centralia/Chehalis, January 2, 2010 Yes, I know it is a little early to start thinking about this one, but I am looking at all the arrangements needed for me to attend (my work schedule is really tight.) After attending Tri Cities II (really enjoyed it), I found navigating the hardest part. I would like to find a ride for this CCCM, as I do not know the area.
  14. In the Northwest, we have "Cache Machine" events http://www.geocaching.com/bookmarks/view.a...74-95ce3fe8d492 jholly's description fits it nicely http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php...t&p=4042229 The most recent was the Tri Cities Cache Machine II in Tri Cities, WA. It was the first one I had attended, and it was a blast. The weather was great, and lots of cachers participated.
  15. I have built a mount to hold my Legend, but I am worried about it overheating, as the sun shines straight down on the top of the mount. I am curious to see how the new law affects CB radio and ham radio, as they are not explicitely mentioned in any media coverage.
  16. Just found my 1000th cache Oct30/08. Also my first cache found at night. (Photo taken at night at GC20D2D. Would explain why my eyes are almost closed from the camera flash) I have been cache for almost 4 years. Took me 3 years to get to 500 (as the cache density around my hometown is not very high). In the last 10 months, I have doubled the number of finds, thanks to Tri Cities Cache Machine II, and my trips to Seattle and Las Vegas. I travel to Seattle on geovacation a couple times a year. These trips are my opportunity to really add to my find count. Love the Puget Sound!
  17. Looks like cache GC20000 is in the process of getting approved! I wonder where it will be? (hope! hope! hope! northwest)
  18. Not quite my experience (I'm single), but similar. When my aunt moved to the same town I live in, I would take her and her sister (my mother) caching with me. I was the one in control of the GPSr and did most of the finding. My aunt has become more obsessed about caching over time. Now she has her own GPSr (my old eXplorist 100) and goes out caching on her own. Everytime we go caching together, she is the one with the printouts and looking to see where the next cache is. She is the one pushing for "just one more" at the end of the day. However, to even things up, her geosensing skills are not yet well formed, so I am able to hunt for caches and usually find them first. Then I back away and let her find the cache. That way we are both finders of the same cache. Works for me.
  19. Several signs located near one of my caches "Fuzzy presents The Drowning Machine" (GC1E5XN)
  20. Ok, a couple more... This is an actual motel in Fife, WA
  21. I'm am thankful of this loophole in GC.com, as long as people do not abuse it. Without insulting regular members, I chose to set a couple of my caches as member-only because of the amount of effort I put into building the caches. After several weeks after publishing, I removed the member-only restriction on my two MO caches, as the location and terrain seems to filter out cachers with poor discipline. Recently, my aunt has become addicted to geocaching. She is a regular member, but goes with me on day trips (she doesn't drive). As I am a premium member, I usually use my account to find the caches we are going to hunt for on a trip. I a recent trip, we found a cache that I didn't realise was a MO cache. With this loophole, my aunt was able to log the find (as she did find the cache). Thanks again for this hidden ability built into GC.com
  22. And not far from the first sign, saw this veterinarian's sign Other side!
  23. I would love to see a linked page on the website that would show stats. I'm thinking of things like "Total number of caches in [country name]? Total number of users in [country name]? Total number of caches in [state]? Oldest cache? Most recent GC number issued and to what cache? The amount of questions that could be answered from this page could be fabulous! A query section so you could use pull-down menus or radio buttons (like on the PQ page) to search for particular information.
