  1. Wow... Ya go away for a couple of years (life gets busy at times) and Geocaching.com has gone all PC. The poor OP mentions the American Legion and becomes a target for "pushing an agenda"? How about all the Rails to Trails caches I've logged? Or how about the first cache I found? Promoting dog ownership... We can't have that, my wife is deathly allergic to them! OooohOooooh... How about the first micro I found at a Purple Heart memorial. That's all militaristic and stuff! Good God (uh oh, hope that didn't offend anyone), if someone wants to do a series on abortion clinics in Houston, let them. I'm pro-life, so what, I don't have to visit them. I'm going to have to stay tuned. If this is truly the way this site has evolved, I guess I'm going to have to reconsider sending my hard earned cash every year.
  2. Some people just don't like people .
  3. I'm sure interested in that...Sounds like fun.
  4. People did, for many years. He would have none of it. What I got from listening to the people who knew him (towards the end of the show) is that he was just a normal guy, it was the movie that made him look crazy. I kinda got the feeling that they were on the edge themselves. Still, an interesting show. Can't wait to get up your way 1stimestar... Maybe when it's a little warmer...
  5. I too saw the show the other night, well the last half anyway. What struck me was his intense hatred of humans and extreme paranoia. A stack of rocks means poachers are out to get him? Wow. I think he went a little over the edge of the humans evil/mother earth good precipice. The worst thing that I saw people do to the bears in the show was fishermen tossing rocks at the bears when they got too close. That nearly sent Treadwell into sobbing hysteria. My unprofessional opinion-"Nutbar". Too bad no one tried to get him help... Hopefully I'll get to watch the whole show next time.

Does this work? Well I'll be darned!
  9. That had to be beyond unnerving. I was going after a FTF in Pt Defiance Park long after the gates had closed and on my way back out I saw a black bear waddle across the road in the dim light of the moon. I was looking over my shoulder nervously until I was back in the truck, and that was just a black bear! I was fishing in Charleston SC and saw an alligator about 30 meters out in the water. I started splashing the rod tip in the water and the gator made a bee-line right for me, fast. I can’t imagine how nervous I’d feel if a grizzly were to make a direct path towards me. According to all the books, the noise of you yelling and the waving your arms is supposed to scare them away. What do you do if the bear hasn’t read the book? Stick an apple in your mouth?

    Cops

Just over 13 years LEO, last five as a Sergeant
  11. My agency could find you. All our cars have computers with mapping software and GPS. We'd just have the closest car punch in your coords and we'd find you just like a cache. Not every agency has their squads so equipped with GPS so you might not get so lucky everywhere. However, even if they didn't have GPS in their squads if you could give your coords any agency would be able to get someone with a GPS to locate you. The coords would be a lot better info than saying you were stranded on trail such and such about 1 to 2 miles from the parking lot at wherever. That would be particularly true if the trail you're on had several side trails or there was a shorter trail and route to get to you. We locate all our crash reports by GPS coords now. No more crash occurring 200 yds south of the intersection of 4th and Main in Podunkville. It's by GPS coords. A lot nicer for plotting crash statistics. Shows exactly where the crash occurred. We were suppose to be up and running by now with even marking tickets and warnings by GPS coords. Been a slight glich in the system but eventually that will happen too. Sweeet!
  12. No, unfortunately when I go to work one of my biggest concerns is if someone is going to try to find a way to decimate our place...and I have to help secure it so that doesn't happen. But I also cannot be or allow our security officers (retired police officers all) to be rude to every truck driver, or visitor that comes to the gate. I probably HAVE dealt with some of the same people that you do. And anyone, not just cops, get hurt assuming people are innocent, yet THAT is the basis of our laws in this country...unless someone has rewritten the consititution and forgotten to let us all know (you know that pesky little thing about being innocent until proven guilty.) But you're right, when someone is rude, you DO have to simply move on, but you don't have to just accept that YOU were in the wrong which was my point in the first place. Phox was NOT in the wrong and has nothing to feel ANY guilt about, THAT is the point that I'm trying to make. Doc Innocent until proven guilty? I think were talking about different things here. "Innocent until proven guilty" has nothing to do with the original post... Did the officer throw the poster in jail for a year without benefit of trial? That's what that "pesky innocent until proven guilty thing" is about. And I didn't say that the officer was right in being rude to phox. The guy sounds like he was either just having a bad shift or is just generally a jerk. Whether phox was in the wrong makes no difference. The officer should have treated phox decently. We seem to agree on the "Golden Rule", which is how I try to treat people I contact. I agree that phox shouldn't feel guilty. He went to the park, apparently not knowing it was closed. He was contacted by the man, found out he shouldn't be there, and left. He even states he can understand why he was contacted. So I'm left with what you're saying being that the cop can't contact you, when you are acting suspiciously, until you've been convicted in a court of law?!? I think I'll go look for a cache, have a nice day...
  13. No, cops die because of guilty criminals in dark parks. Not people that they've already stopped, spoken to and run through their computers. Liberal? I don't think so. But, let me try to be rude to the next cop I see and I wonder what happens? As I said, they don't have that RIGHT and they don't. If they got reported for it, tell me that they wouldn't have a problem with their supervisor, especially if it has been reported before. Doc I believe you're missing the point. When you go to work, is one of your greatest concerns that someone will feloniosly assault you as you go about your job? It's one of ours. You don't deal with the same "people" that we do. Cops do get killed and injured by assuming something is innocent when it isn't. That said, sounds like the guy was at least somewhat rude. Big deal, move on, that's what I have to do...
  14. Me too! Can't believe all the wood shampoos I wasted on cachers before I found out this was real...
  15. Ive been happy with mine for years now. It takes a lickin and keeps on tickin... Plus I haven't seen anything yet to make me want to spend several hundred dollars to upgrade.

    Nw Snakes

Interesting links, I've lived here for close to 40 years and never seen anything this side of the mountains except garter snakes...
  17. Doesn't sound like geocaching to me... A scavenger hunt with clues inside the box?
  18. Would it be a security problem to log those "caches" on Waymarking.com? Might need to get a new category approved..."Weapons caches".
  19. Interesting, when I first arrived on my ship, it was escorting the Ike. The Mighty Mississippi CGN-40. As for my avatar, just found it somewhere...
  20. That's my point, would I be able to just stroll onto the grounds of a BSA camp holding a GPSr in hand, or would I have to be in the organization to be allowed on the property? As I said, it's a cool idea... Just wondering if it would be allowed if non-members of the organization couldn't go there to log it...
