  1. I like the trip odometer - but HOW do you reset it for a new trip. We went geocaching with it and worked great. But now I want to reset the odometer so next time I go - its fresh from zero. I have cleared the active track and started a new track but the trip odometer still says 15.3406 miles thanks in advance
  2. thanks for the VERY helpful comments. I searched online and looked through the use manual and couldnt find anything on GSAK for this. THANKS!@!!
  3. Do I transfer data from my GPS back to GSAK or do I manually mark inside of GSAK or do I have to download those gpx locations again? How in GSAK do I notate that I have found caches so that when I'm ready to go out again, I don't have those showing up in my list. I know my Explorist500LE will mark them as found once marked in the unit. But how do I get that mark BACK to GSAK? I am a premium member if that helps me out any. BTW if you aren't a premium, I HIGHLY reccommend it - being able to do a pocket query for 500 caches at one time is WAY more helpfull then selecting 20 checkmarks at a time and downloading those individually.
  4. How many of you carry walking sticks? that might be something to consider carrying. The caches Ive been finding lately are not just there - usually there is a bunck of brush etc covering them. I don't want to go blindly sticking my hands in a pile of kindling so to speak.
  5. I have the north american version 500LE NO PROBLEMS The new nave screens are pretty nice. I like that spedometer
  6. so would it be safe to assume since the 500 and 500 le are the same minus power connections shipped with - that one could try this update on a 500le? What do I need to do to back up the base map etc?
  7. If it shows more streams and rivers I don't feel like I wasted 10 bucks then. Is there a way to "?superimpose?" the Direct Route maps with the topo3d maps?
  8. Okay so I paid the 9.99 for the MapSend Topo3d with my 500 LE which finally arrived today THANK YOU - yes Im stoked too. Anyway. I dont really see anything different between this (the topo3D) and the DirectRoute NA 2.00f. I did notice it has topo when in the mountain regions. But I thought for hiking it would show every patch of empty field and greenery etc. I really doesn't show anything but basic maps and the typical waypoints. Am I weird to expect it to have had more details? Cause right now Im honestly feeling like I wasted $9.99
  9. www.buydig.com I just ordered mine from there (Magellan Explorist 500LE). NOT reconditioned. 100% brandnew usa warranty. $175 shipped. Only other thing you will need to get started is an SD card. CHECK THIS OUT: 133x 512 Mb card 133x is one of the fastest sd cards out there - the speed will significantly improve your load speeds. As has been previously stated - you might want to get a li-on rechargable battery. Do a search on these forums for 500LE rechargable battery. There is a Motorolla you can get off ebay.com (got mine for 3.99 plus a few dollars shipping). Word is it lasts 17+ hours versus the 4 from the AAAs search google for "MOTOROLLA SNN5595 B" (changed above to add the "B" to the product #)
  10. Thanks all for the replies - I returned the unit and am looking to purchase another. It worked great indoors aquiring as many as 9 satellites while connected to the adapter. Any suggestions for the best place to buy?
  11. Does the 500LE not come with a usb cable to connect to the pc??? jpred1 did you buy online at academy? I see it for 199
  12. He did say he was in the price range of the explorist 300 - 400. That TOTALLY rules out the Garmin 60 and 76 CX CSX etc. Well unfortunately - I do not believe you will scratch buy on that price range with a compass and barometer and altimeter. It just doesnt happen that cheap. But do you REALLY need all that? Compass - buy a cheap silva. Altimeter - ALL explorist line will tell you current elevation. They just don't all project it in a 3d grid. Barometer - if you really need that - you will have to step up to the 600 line of explorist. I would DEFINATELY reccommend the 400 line because you can add your own SD cards for unlimited expandibility. Not sure of your price range- but check out : ebay, tigergps and offroute. I just picked up a eXplorist 500 for 148.
  13. ITs relatively new. Here's the issue though: I let it charge while I was at work - five hours didnt do the trick the night before - so I figured - 9 or so should do the trick. When I came home I checked it - the unit powered on - battery was NOT fully charged but about 1/2 cm from full. It SHOULD power on and stay on for quite some time - NO DICE. After 3 minutes it kills off. THen I cannot get it to power back on until I charge it again for several hours - then another few minutes of use and goes dead. Note: I have the unit off while charging - and have tried screwing the cable in both directions (wire points up - and - wire points down)
  14. how can I try 3 AAAs? I didnt see any place in the compartment where I could place 3 AAA
  15. I can get my Magellan Explorist 500 to work fine for 10 minutes after charging then it shuts off dead. No power down./ I plug in charger -USB and it says "full charge" then it jumps to "charging" and shows batter half used. Then back to "full charge" then back and forth Any suggestions?
  16. papadean - check out eBay - I just picked up a basically brandnew explorist 500 for $148 including Mapsend and charger
  17. Im a self-proclaimed noob. My very first GPS is on it was as I type. Im trying to follow this post to further understand the etiquette. Could someone please clarify for me the situation? Here's what I have gleemed so far. Someone has a travelbug. I understand that in the sense of its an object with specific destination goals. In this case to visit all the stargate caches. The two things that confuse me. Something about not wanting discovery logs? If you don't have a log of where it was found - how do you know what stargates it has been to? The second Im confused by is why don't you want this person to discover your travel bug? Or was this person just going to keep it and hang it on a wall = thus preventing it from completing its mission? Thanks for your time. ps glad you got your travel bug back.
  18. Add one Magellan Explorist 500 - my very first. Picked it up for $148 with mapping software. *nods to everyone - doctor-doctor doctor-doctor...
  19. I hate that Im bumping this thread but it sounds like this is an advertisement. Your first post here
  20. I hope Im not hijacking this post too severely. But along the lines of the 500 and 500 LE. Do you think its safe to purchase the batteries or unit on ebay. There are some with 100% feedback and offer it as brand new never opened never used. What are your thoughts. if this is too much of a hijack please let me know and I'll create a new thread. But more back to target I saw the batter with charger for 7.99 on ebay
  21. I can't really say much about the topo software. Firmware is a way to update your gps unit with new abilities, bug fixes, add satellites etc. If firmware update is available you should update your unit with it. Especially with the new firmware for the 500. One thing I believe was confirmed by other users to have been added was the ability to mark a cache.POI as found.
  22. Thanks Do you have any knowledge of the geocaching ability of the MAgellan 500? Is there an option to mark once you have found items etc? Because from what I have read the Legend CX will allow you to setup geochache tasks. Letting you select you have found one and then have it automatically point you towards the next on your course. What similar functions does the Magellan 500 have? Thanks again.
  23. I was looking at these two units and Im really not sure how to make a decision. The magellan seems more solid (construction wise) like it would hold up better and I think that is in part to the fact its screen sits in the middle of the unit where as garmin has their screen at the bottom. The squareness of the Garmin also concerns me for holding up versus the magellan being more rounded. I checked both manuals and being new to Geocaching. I can't really tell which would offer more options in terms of geocaching. Garmin's manual certainly makes it look easier with the nice icons where as the magellan manual is horrible and dry almost graphic-less. I will be geocaching mostly with my 5 year old and hopefully my wife will come along often enough to get addicted as well. Could someone please comment on the geocaching abilty of the magellan explorist 500 le versus the garmin Legend CX Thanks.
