  1. quote:Originally posted by brdad:pipedreamer, while I don't necessarily agree with your opinion here, if what you say is true, what you are doing for your grandkids is truly honorable. Thanks, but it's not really. I have them after school since their parents work till 6. I'd rather they get outdoors in the fresh air rather than play videogames all afternoon. But thank you for saying that anyway.
  2. quote:Originally posted by Ramness570:Pipedreamer, are you even a cacher? Your profile shows you registered in May 2002 and you have 0 finds and 0 hides… Do you not post finds? Do you have another Username in which you use to log hides/finds? Or are you just a spectator whining from the peanut gallery? I have never physically found a cache and probably never will. However I do go with my grandsons on caches and wait in the van and talk to them by 2-way radio. I still enjoy the sport that way it's fun to hear their excited chatter over the radio, then their happiness at finding it. They describe the contents to me over the radio. I also post my grandson's finds for them since they dont have internet acess at home.
  3. quote:Originally posted by Rubbertoe:just ignore posts that you (pipedreamer) aren't interested in. Here's the deal: During those lucky few times I get to spend a few minutes on the forums, I notice maybe a half-dozen topics that I have been following or are interested in reading. But in order to see what's new, I have to OPEN each one and wait for it all to load. Then I find that instead of geocaching-related posts, there are 30 or 40 stupid, off-topic one-liners from the likes of umc. "Nothing there of interest, move along", you say. But meanwhile I've spent 20 minutes reading through it all. Huge waste of time and now my time online is used up. umc is obviously starved for attention, he's been here 12 days and churned out over 350 posts in that time. That's over 30 posts PER DAY and I've seen very few that are even remotely on-topic. Pathetic. And I stick to my opinion that is is also abuse of the geocaching forums.
  4. quote:Originally posted by Mopar:I would much rather have a killfile option. If I choose not to read posts like http://opentopic.Groundspeak.com/0/OpenTopic?a=tpc&s=1750973553&f=3000917383&m=4510923435 one or http://opentopic.Groundspeak.com/0/OpenTopic?a=tpc&s=1750973553&f=3000917383&m=8200934435& one, then thats my own choice. I just wish I could automate that choice with a killfile, rather then have to manually weed out 300 posts Right. But we don't have a killfile on these boards. Meaning that we all have to wade through 300 mainly off-topic posts from some immature kid with nothing better to do that "sit at his cumputer all day annoying people".
  5. Like many users, I have a very limited amount of time to use the geocaching forums due to work demands. In my case, my connection is also slow and medical problems make browsing time-consuming. I am annoyed that a forum user "umc" is currently trying to post as many posts as possible here, just for the sake of posting. He has stated that he enjoys "spending all day on the computer annoying people" and that he wants to “go for” a goal of putting 300 posts on here in one day. Nothing about the quality of said posts, he is just after sheer volume for some stupid reason. As far as I’m concerned, this is a blatant abuse of the geocaching forums. I would like to request that umc be prohibited from spamming the boards any further and that his posting privileges be revoked until he can learn to treat the forums and his fellow geocachers with more consideration.
  6. quote:Originally posted by umc: "until he grows up"???????????? Who is the one name calling here? Maybe you should think twice about your rude comments. That's right, until you grow up. To quote you: "I sit in front of a computer all day long I like annoying people if I can." Only an arrogant, immature person would send THREE HUNDRED useless posts to a public forum just so he could say he posted three hundred posts in one night. What on earth makes you think the rest of us want to read your drivel? I repeat my request for the moderators to revoke umc's posting privileges until he learns not to abuse the forums.

  9. Why the hell should I have to wade through three hundred useless posts just because YOU want to abuse the forum? Jeremy, I'd like to request that umc's posting priveleges be yanked until he grows up and learns a little condsideration for his fellow geocachers. I've dropped the forums from my daily bookmarks. I'll check back in a week or so, maybe he'll be gone by then.

  12. quote:Originally posted by MrGigabyte:I was aware of these photos. However, the talents of a creator of these images are considerably beyond the skills that I possess. He is a graphic artist who has growing interest in caching. He is also, a graphic artist with my firm. So you're blaming it all on someone else then. Nothing like a little personal responsibility. Sad too that this person you claim has a growing interest in geocaching is learning about it from a cheater. quote:While I am aware of these images, and take full responsibility, I was not really all that concerned at the time. Not "really all that concerned" that you were responsible for deliberately posting fraudulent finds on caches you did not visit? In other words, cheating is just a-ok with you then? quote:The logs were made with my knowledge, but felt no harm would be done. Nope, except to your reputation. My feeling is that all of this cheater's logs should be removed from the site, then his membership privileges on geocaching.com should be revoked. That will send a clear message to the geocaching community that honesty, integrity and good sportsmanship are as important in our sport as any other. Just my opinion.
  13. quote:Originally posted by Criminal:_________________________________________ The one here matches this photo, except that the images are reversed. I found that phot with about 5-10 minutes of searching. _________________________________________ That’s incredible, no respect for the cacher but his computer skills are impressive. I can’t figure out how he got the tree branches to be in front of him. Actually his skills are poor, the shadows give him away. In the photo, the shadow of the cacher's hand on his pants falls almost directly behind the hand, meaning the sun was almost directly behind the photographer. Whereas the sun is way off to the side of the observatory, as proven by the fact that an entire side of the building is in shade.
  14. quote:Originally posted by georgeandmary: That's not caused by the tire, it's cause by water erosion. LOL, that reminds me of the time Ronald Reagan claimed that air pollution isn't caused by car and industrial emissions at all, it's those nasty trees that are doing it.
  15. My firewall, ZoneAlarm Pro, just alerted me that it sucessfully blocked an attempted communication between my hard drive and Groundspeak.com. One outgoing packet had a destination of karma.Groundspeak.com and 2 packets tried to access ads.Groundspeak.com The firewall blocked all three attempts. Does anyone know what type of communication this was and why it was attempted?
  16. quote:Sadly, you would likely bet wrong. The gay sex in the parks thing is so big, it has a website so people visiting a new city will know where to go.Can you point a link to this website? I would like to know where NOT to place a cache.
  17. quote:Originally posted by mtncycler: Yes a hole 3-4ft deep. This is so other animals do not come into contact with human waste. First, NO. Ferchrissake, do NOT dig a hole four FEET deep! Do you realize how much soil and habitat you will have to disturb to dig a huge hole like that? Not to mention that with rocks and roots blocking your progress, you'd probably have to try multiple locations before finding a spot that would even let you dig down that far. The area would look like a bombed-out warzone by the time you were finished. Second, animals come into contact with other species' poop all the time. You don't see bear burying their poop so deer don't "come in contact " with it do you? Where do people get this crazy idea that poop from wildlife is "pure" but that human poop is toxic? We're all animals, all poop is essentially the same. quote:Peeing at the base of a tree then kicking moss onto it also stops bacterial contamination. No, no NO! First, by "kicking moss onto it" you are killing the moss and destroying habitat, not to mention uglifying the area. Second, where is your scientific proof for this idea that moss "stops bacterial contamination"?

All the principles are clearly stated here: http://www.lnt.org/ The main topics here are discussions of some of the sillier statements make by those who either believe outdoor myths, don't understand LNT or take it to an politically-correct extreme. To sum it up: It's okay to pee in the woods, and no, deer don't "dig up" the woods trying lick the salt from people's urine. Do your business well off the trail, never on it. "Pack in it, pack it out" should always be practiced when it comes to trash and food scraps. But telling others to ziplock poop (whether dog or human) and carry it out in their packs is patently ridiculous.

  23. quote:Just like I wouldn't consider leaving a dump in your living room or any other area you might walk (though, as you point out, it IS perfectly natural), I would hope you wouldn't leave your's where I might walk. Okay well here's a head's up for ya then: On our last backcountry trip, my dog pooped somewhere in the Tongass National Forest. Near a big tree. The park is only 16.8 million acres in size, so watch your step.
