  1. It was my husband who actually worked on it...I think there is a button at the bottom right of the screen and you push that while hitting the power button? Sorry not much help on that. I did hear back from Garmin & they are going to exchange my unit for a new one. The only cost to me is shipping my unit to them since it is under warranty (thank goodness!). They didn't give any indication as to what happened, but that it had to be sent to them. Thanks again!
  2. Thank you for the link! I will definitely keep that handy. I must have been a little flustered when typing the post as it is actually my car model that is doing this. It is a Garmin Nuvi 255W. Do you have a link for that one? TIA!
  3. Hi everyone! I can sure use your help if you know anything about the Garmin 400t. I used my GPS yesterday to get me to an Easter Egg Hunt. Last night, I updated my caches in the Garmin using GSAK and the POI loader. Today, I went to go caching and now my Garmin won't load up If you turn it on, it acts like it is going to load the maps (says "loading maps"), then it double beeps, gives a blank screen, then starts the process again. We've tried to do a hard reset, but that didn't help either. When we hook it up to the computer, it won't act normal either. Anyone ever heard of this or know what I need to do to get it fixed? TIA!! **Edited to Add** I was confused between my handheld and car model. This is actually my Garmin Nuvi 255W.
  4. I am under the impression that a hider is supposed to take the coords at the place of the cache, meaning that you stand as close to the cache as possible & take a coordinate reading. I've heard some other cachers say that as long as they take the coords within 30 ft or less of the cache, then that is acceptable. Just curious as to the thoughts of others on this. Thanks!
  5. My 5 yr old likes to cache with me. She's not too fond of the park & grabs though. She likes the ones with real "treasure" at the end. She likes to discover lots of things along the way which makes it even more fun for me.
  6. I ran across a coin that I had to log on a different site. I think it was a Texas geocaching coin. I had to go to their site to log it.
  7. I usually cache alone too. If I know that I will be going on a hike or in remote places, then I will bring my dog. I don't know if she would actually "save" me, but at least she's a bit of a deterrent.
  8. Richard Gere, but Harrison Ford would be great too
  9. When I started caching in January, the ONLY cache in my town was a lamp post micro. I remember how thrilled I was to find it. It was the start to my geocaching obsession! I agree with others & say if you don't like them, don't look for them! There is a nifty "ignore listing" option that will let you take them off your list.
  10. My membership just automatically drafts out of my paypal acct. Once it is done, I get an email saying that I paid $3.
  11. I don't think it will stop me, but I will be more efficient too. Like a previous poster mentioned, it'll still be cheaper than some other activities that you might spend an afternoon doing.
  12. I had the same problem in Eastern NC using a Magellan 210.
  13. That is a fantastic story! TFS! My grandmother, who will be 80 in May, loves to cache with me. She's fairly healthy but can't do any far hiking. The ones that aren't a far walk or pretty urban are perfect for her. I took her out a week or so ago & she had a blast. She is tickled just to get out of the house & see things that she hasn't seen before & go places she's never been.
  14. I get a pocket query sent to me each week with unfound caches. I just name it the same file name as the geocaching file in my GPS & upload the new file to it. The only things on my GPS are unfound caches & my own POI.
  15. I found a nice selection at Walmart & a few at Target. They were with the other food storage (rubbermaid, sterlite, etc).
  16. Hi Katrina, I have a 4 yr old that like to go "treasure hunting" with me. It's great for getting out & having some fun & enjoying the outdoors. I've been caching since January & love it. To have 88 caches within 10 miles of your house - wow! you're lucky!! Most of the caches I have to drive at least 45 minutes to get to. Have fun!!
  17. Congrats!! Welcome to the addiction!
  18. I've been caching since January. I bought the Magellan 210 on some recommendation from this board & from the research I did online. I have been really happy with it & the more I use it, the better I get. It was about $160 (in that ball park). It has the basic maps on it but you can buy the more detailed maps. I haven't done that yet. I've never used a higher end GPS so I'm not sure what I'm missing but I do get along pretty good with what I've got. Good luck!
