A Height Warning for Short Cachers
Sioneva replied to Dianalynnxk's topic in General geocaching topics
I'm about 5'1" myself, so I see where you are coming from, and I've had my height-challenged frustrations, too. But you know... I never would have had the experience of falling off an ammo can I was using as a stepladder, or dragging friends along to use as human ladders, if I were taller... It's just part of the challenge. I can't get it because I'm too short? I'll think a bit and find a way around it... or come back later with height-boosting accessories. No shame in coming back for a cache. Still, if anyone has a Jetsons' style jet-pack, I'll take one of those. -
Ringbone? Sorry but you lost me.... http://geolex.locusprime.net/ Scroll down to the R's..... it's pretty funny. That is pretty funny! I've heard that term several times but shrugged it off as some inside joke. Thanks for sheeding the light on it for me! Bad idea to read that at work! I had the damnedest time trying not to laugh out loud.

*grin* I don't think it's you, or that you can do anything to change it... except wait. I think you have to be a member for about a month before it will let you have any friends. It's a very mean system.

I carry a note pad and jot down something about each cache, no matter how mundane. Also, I'm not in a rush to get them all logged. I found 50 caches in one day a few months ago and it took me a long week to get them all logged. *grin* That's exactly what I do... I have my - well, I'm on my second 'little black book' of caches, I've already filled one memobook. Whenever I find a cache, I write down /something/ memorable. Especially if I know I'll find a lot of caches that day. My first paragraph in a log is always a cut-n-paste about who I was with or what I was planning on doing that day, and I write a second one detailing that specific cache experience. If I'm finding a lot by the same cacher though, I skip the first paragraph after the first time. No sense boring anyone to death!

Isn't the point of the crosses to put something up so that people will stop and read? Seems like that's what putting a geocache there will accomplish as well... as long as the crosses aren't being physically disturbed or altered, I can't see a problem.

This just reinforces my conclusion that this particular person posts either to: A. display a really stupid, ugly avatar B. tick people off C. Both A and B I'm sure the reviewers appreciated the gratitious, out of nowhere slam. And I'm sure you find my post hilarious, or whatever.

Females - Solo Caching, how to stay safe
Sioneva replied to leftover's topic in General geocaching topics
You'll enjoy the book. Not grim as the title suggests, but uplifting and even "empowering." I guess what motivated me to read it was that I noticed my personal space in public shrinking. I realized that glasses, baldness and a gray beard had changed the threat assessment that others assigned to me. Takes a little adjustment. If I live to be old and frail my threat status will sink still lower. Best to develop good habits of situational awareness now. <snip> I know I said I was done with this thread, but... I read an excerpt from the book today on Amazon, and it intrigued me enough that I spent an hour after work standing in the aisle at a bookstore, skimming some sections, reading intently through others. Aside from a liberal, anti-gun viewpoint, the author has some solid, telling points on how to recognize danger, and why your instincts might be screaming a warning. It certainly has given me a lot of food for thought - thank you for recommending it! Unfortunately, it doesn't go into depth on what to do once you have recognized a threat, but I guess that's where common sense should kick in! I don't say it'll be enough to make my change my solo-caching excursions, but I think I'll be better at judging social interaction in terms of good/bad. There's only been once in the last year or so that really lit off my 'get out of here NOW' instincts, and that was in an aisle at a Dollar Store, oddly enough, no anywhere out remote and isolated. Thanks again. -
Not all caches can hold a bug but if it actually visited the cache it should get credit for being there. Sometimes people plan to place the bug in a location the helps meet the bug's goal. If they happen to go caching along the way I would certainly hope they would log the bug. You may prefer to move a bug one cache, but I don't think I'd label other folk's methods as seems like cheating. Both the owner (me) and the mover (my friend) would have preferred to have the coin logged in and out of a physical cache, but they were kind of scarce in the section of Russia she was in. I'm not complaining. And I don't regard it as cheating - why shouldn't it get credit for the miles it traveled, if there was a legitimate cache there, virtual or not? But that's a topic for another forum. And another thread.

Thanks for the reply. And sorry about the duplicate posting. I wasn't sure which forum, and I asked that the other thread be closed... guess not yet.

A friend of mine recently took two coins of mine over to Russia and logged them in and out of a virtual cache there. The additional 4000+ miles were added to the total when I hit 'recalculate', and it looked really good. One coin had about 13,000 miles total - really sweet! She then remembered that she had taken then to a virtual in Chicago before going to Russia, and added a backdated entry for each coin - ever since then, the mileage of the trip to Russia isn't showing up, no matter how many times I hit recalculate. It shows the mileage to Chicago, but no mileage figures for Russia. Is there something I need to tweak to fix this? Thanks!

Please close this thread then, and I'll repost in the other forum. Thanks.

Okay, now I know Team Cotati is just trying to push people's buttons and tick them off. So I'm done with this thread. I've got a solo trip to plan. -

Yes, it'd become so much saner of a world if women everywhere cowered and hid indoors all the time. But then we wouldn't be able to amuse Team Cotati. What do we do? Someone tell me what to do! -
THE FUNNIEST LOGS, YOU CANT MAKE UP
Sioneva replied to genegene's topic in General geocaching topics
WHAT HAPPENED TO TED?!? I read the story, hubby gets it next, but it stopped with him getting ready to return to the cave. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?!? Would you look for a cache in here? A new sucker is born every minute. Don't believe anything you read on the internet. The real story was written by Thomas Lera in 1987. It was called, "THE TERROR IN HUPMAN’S CAVE." It was definately a great read though. <snip> Didn't really care if it was real or not, I just wanted the rest of the story! -

My head's actually not that pretty... but I don't think I'll worry about it anyway. -

Having a 'guard' dog along, even a slow one is hardly being alone. Nice to see that you have realized the deficiencies of an aging guard dog and now have a plan to buddy with other cachers for your solo caching adventures. A really great plan. I cache a lot solo. I also cache a lot with others, and not because I feel the need to have some big strong male protect me. Sheesh. In fact, this weekend, I'm taking off on a solo 12 county caching spree through a lot of northern Nebraska. Not my first. Won't be my last. -
Go to the waypoint and using the joystick highlight the treasure chest icon, click on it and you will see an display of assorted other icons. One of them is Cache Found. Use your joystick to select that one and you're done. That's the only way I know how to do it with the Legend. That was it! Thanks, everyone... I'll be quiet now. I was going crazy!
-
Well, I know I saw it on there... so can we pretend I have a more advanced model, and list the steps how to get to that screen? I'll have no hair left at this point. Thanks!
-
It's a blue Garmin Etrex Legend, and I saw the option on there... I just can't find it again.
-
I cycled through every page I could find, but no luck still.
-
I was just given a brand new ETrex Legend, and while playing with it, I stumbled over an option to make a cache as 'found'... but I was never able to find the option again! How do I do this? And does it do anything special other than change the icon? Can I filter on the GPS to not see them? Thanks!
