  2. Well, considering that the orbits are not geostationary, I imagine that the changes would affect us all. But I do have to say that the article seems to be mostly just the speculation of a German auto club. I didn't see anything close to an official US government source quoted there, so I'm not worrying just yet. High precision GPS has been integrated into too many things to be turned off without any warning. People would @#$% a brick. (BTW, you wouldn't happen to read slashdot, would you? =) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Delete windows to communicate freely with me.
  3. While the article posted to the forum seemed pretty neutral, the (police?) official interviewed in the news story called it a "disruption and public hazard" or something along those lines. Bad press indeed. My desire to throttle the guy nonwithstanding, though, the bomb squad seems to have handled the situation correctly. I just wish he wouldn't single out geocaching - after all, false alarms happen all the time. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Delete windows to communicate freely with me.
  4. While I was watching CNN international late last night they ran a story about the USAF launching a rocket and how it was somehow paying tribute to the victims of 11 september. In passing, however, they mentioned that the payload was a new GPS satellite. They went on to discuss how that would help us win the war on terror/iraq/etc, but by then I wasn't paying attention so much as asking myself whether or not this new bird could be picked up by my etrex. Given my understanding of how the system works, I assume that the orbit (once the elements are constant and well known) will be included in some forthcoming firmware update, but if anyone knows better, could you tell me? It'd be really cool if I could pick it up without changing my software. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Delete windows to communicate freely with me.
  5. Glad you enjoyed Paris! Kinda redefines "grandeur", doesn't it? It did for me, at least...especially the gilt statues above Place de l'Opera. I can't wait to go back there in August (UPS says the tickets will be here tomorrow =) I know you didn't have much time to go geocaching, but of the ones you did visit can you make any reccomendations? Any that shouldn't be missed? Cheers, -Jonathan --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Delete windows to communicate freely with me.

  7. Otterbuff Wrote: I am going to Paris and taking my Legend. However, there does not appear to be any type of base map for Paris. Nope...the basemap only covers the Americas. I'll be studying in France next fall, though, so I got the MapSource Europe CD. So far I've loaded Paris and Toulouse onto my Legend, and the detail is EXQUISITE. I can't wait to locate my host family and mark them as a waypoint --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Delete windows to communicate freely with me.

  9. Hey all...I got my First GPS, an Etrex Legend today. As I was showing it off to my friends at a graduation party, one of them suggested that we move away from direct sunlight which, according to him, can degrade the liquid crystals in the display. I have heard similar things concerning laptop screens, so I imagine that there is some grain of truth to this advice. Nevertheless, I cannot imagine that Garmin wouldn't include some type of shielding in a device that is designed for hiking. Can any of y'all with models of the eTrex line (or any other model, really), comment on this? Basically I figure that a GPS would be more robust than a laptop when it comes to outdoor use. -Jonathan PS: This is my first post here, so...Hi! --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Delete windows to communicate freely with me.
