1. quote:Originally posted by mav0ric:Forgive me if this is out of line but I am so very new to GC that I have a question on this old Victoria cache. In the description I read this; "We placed this cache on our vacation up to Victoria B.C. from Portland, Oregon. " Yet when I read the aproval rules it stated that caches placed on vacation were agains the rules. Are there exceptions? If so what are they. I am new and just want to understand the etiquete and abide the spirit of the quest. Please set me straight on this one. Todd "Patience is for those who lack conviction" First of all, welcome to the game Todd. Many successes. Second, this cache was placed back in 2002, when the "vacation" rule did not yet apply. As such, it has been grandfathered, or allowed to remain as is. It is part of Victoria geocaching history, so it was important that it be replaced as soon as possible, to avoid being archived. (We hope that some kind admin can UN-archive it now. That's up to you, White Rabbit!) That task was accomplished this evening. We hope that it can be un-archived, so that many more can enjoy this neat cache. Washington State Geocaching Association How much intelligence does it take to sneak up on a piece of tupperware?
 2. Has anyone ever noticed that Southern British Columbia has more than it's fair share of contoversy? Perhaps it's our climate, or our lifestyle, but we do seem to like to dirty up Hydee's sandbox. To address Hydee's issue, about hearsay verus experience, I can say the following: I have not met Jomarac5, though I quite often find his posts illuminating and thought provoking. He has, on occasion been known to ruffle a few feathers, but this does not take away from his persona in any way, as he is entitled to his opinion. He does keep us on our toes, after all. I have met RobertM, and am impressed with his ability and intelligence. I do not however, believe that any of us could ever convince J5 and RM of the need to have an "Approver" account. They simply can't see that particular point of view. That is not a fault, it is just their point of view. Seneca brings up a very good point. MrGigabyte may, or may not ( I was not present, so I can neither confirm nor deny) have infringed upon some written or unwritten geocaching.com guidelines. I do know that Seneca described that alleged episode best, however, "PUblic Ridicule". That is the toughest thing that anyone in this sport could be forced to bear. I know MrGigabyte. I do not believe that I know Cache-Advance, although he (C-A) has approved caches of mine in the past, and helped when I screwed up even that simple task. I have cached both with MrG, and in friendly competition with him. He is a great guy, and a credit to the sport. If he IS an approver, then why not cut some slack for him, Hydee, Mtn-man, and all the other approvers. They are volunteers, after all. OK J5, I'm wearing my Kevlar Flak Jacket. Fire when ready. 3. I was thrilled when I found this one, as I believe it was my third ever find. As such, I would be happy to replace it for you, and possibly move it so that it will not be plundered again. How much intelligence does it take to sneak up on a piece of tupperware?
 4. We managed to find the only dry period of the entire week to be on the Gulf Islands for a few caches this last Sunday. Victoria has received about 315 mm (about 12 inches) of rain since last Thursday. This included our record one day total Yesterday of 81 mm ( 3.5 inches) For those of you who noted during the VCM how dry our summers are, the grass is green once again. 5. OziExplorer only offers North Up, so in the CacheCruiser running the Laptop, it's North Up. I would change that if I could, however. I don't have any issue with "Track Up", so I use it constantly. I use map mode in the car, and on the first part of the hike. At 200 meters or so, I switch to GoTo, and hope for the best, so that I can most efficiently log a "No Find". As far as Navigation goes, landmark navigation drives me up the wall, as quite a few people use movable landmarks. ("You know, right across from where the Dairy Queen used to be." USED TO BE??? sigh) Ditto to cacherunner's minutes idea. Give me meters, hands, furlongs, nautical miles, bushels, chains, litres or pecks, just please Lord not minutes. First of all, I always wind up behind 'That guy' who drives 22 mph in a 40 zone, and won't let you get by, or if I'm walking, I pass the thing because the direction giver walks at half the speed I do. I also prefer UTM as a coordinate system, as it's based on the metric system, and shows you how many Meters you are from the waypoint. Very cool. I will resort to Lat/Long if I have to, kicking and screaming; at the Spokane Cache Machine, nobody knew what I was talking about...UTM?? 6. Hmmm... don't think so. Lat/Long sure doesn't look like THIS neck of the woods! Possibly La Belle Province? How much intelligence does it take to sneak up on a piece of tupperware?

 9. On a very sad day, three geocachers passed away from natural causes. One cacher was from Ontario, another from Pennsylvania, and the third from Seattle. All three happened to come upon the pearly gates, just as St. Peter and the Head Honcho were doing some re-arranging. St. Peter addressed them about this situation: "Well folks, it seems we only have but three spots open, because of renovations. One is in heaven, one in hell, and the third is in purgatory. Tell me, in 100 words or less, where you should go and why." The cacher from Ontario stepped forward and said, "St. Peter, I was a good cacher. I always replaced the container where I found it, traded fairly, and was only mean in the Forums once. I DID, however, log a find on a cache I thought was missing, but wasn't." St. Peter nodded, and turned to the cacher from pennsylvania. He began, "St. Peter, I am a premium member. I have always been kind to others, replaced containers, mailed logbooks to cache owners in other states and provinces, and stayed out of the Forums altogether." St. Peter nodded, and turned to the Cacher from Seattle. " St. Peter," he began, " I am a Charter Member and a Groundspeak Approver. I have moderated Forums, and I have never placed a lame virtual, or logged a locationless cache. I have 1598 finds, all difficulty 3 3 or higher. I work for the frog." St. Peter looked at the three and said, "From Ontario, you will atone for your geo-sins. Purgatory for you. From Pennsylvania, you will be rewarded for your service and dedication to the sport, for you are off to heaven. From Seattle, I express my deepest sympathies. You are going to see the devil." The Groundspeak Approver from Seattle was astonished. He asked, "But great St. Peter, I have dedicated my earthly LIFE to the SPORT!!" St. Peter replies, "Never fear, Seattleite. You are too wet to burn." How much intelligence does it take to sneak up on a piece of tupperware?
 10. quote:Originally posted by SuperGenius:MBC and CR what's this you might not be able to attend the OCM stuff! That's unacceptable. Pepper http://www.geocachingwa.org Horizontals where it's at! Pepper it just depends on the work situation. December was very favourable for us, January is not so good. ( Income tax season begins here, and I have clients that want it complete by the 5th.) This does not mean I am ruling it out, however. It will take having other people here adjust THEIR schedules. That could be difficult, as most people I work for (clients) are VERY inflexible. I will begin working on them now, so that they are softened up. We will try our best, however. Never give up hope. How much intelligence does it take to sneak up on a piece of tupperware?
 11. quote:Originally posted by Bull Moose:I've kind of gathered what a cache machine is, but help me out with how it works in reality. Does one person find a cache then fifty people come by and sign the log without actually finding it, or are there smaller groups so the cache is actually -found- a couple of times that day... what? Just FMI. http://www.keenpeople.com/stats/

At Spokane, the gang spread out after 7 or 8 caches, and even more so after lunch. We (our carload) were mostly alone for probably 30 or more. You still run into people, though, and can cache as a group if you wish. Either is great fun. I am hoping to attend, but if not, best of luck to all. How much intelligence does it take to sneak up on a piece of tupperware? 14. Oh yes, I forgot. Could someone in the Olympia area check the hotel where we all decide to land, and see if it really has High Speed Internet access? Travelodge had phone lines only, which I don't mind, but the jack in our room was broken too, so we had ZERO access for Guardian, our Compaq laptop. This forced us to converse, mingle, and enjoy immensely our time with other cachers. Ok. Forget what I just said. How much intelligence does it take to sneak up on a piece of tupperware?

We ask, however, that you not upset the locals with these 500,000 to 3,000,00 candlepower Cannons. Oh and Travis: I JUST NOW figured out your signature line. JUST brilliant, buddy! 17. Don't care really! Just hurry up and get here, whatever date it is! CACHE ON!!! FIND THEM ALL! The Cachecruiser: Perhaps a poll should be taken here. Do we: A) Decorate it here in Victoria Make it A Babaloo event, and everybody has a go at it? It will be sporting a 400 watt inverter, as it it did at Spokane, which can power quite a few Xmas lights, et al. About candy, we will again be bringing a few cases of chocolate bars, as we presume that this is now tradition. I will expect input by Dec. 15 on what kinds of bars to smuggle. EGH!, we hope you will be travelling with us again, as well as our Imperious leader, GrandpaRocks. I can't wait. Travis, I vote for this Sunday October 5. Why wait? 18. quote:Originally posted by TotemLake:That is a cool shirt! MBC you crack me up... no wait... that wasn't your fault. Great job finding the truck and a great log worthy of creating a cache to commemorate it. Cheers! TL TL, Have you ever had a stretch of luck that just doesn't quit for a while? I've been having that the last week or so. While I DO admit that the experience of doing KFWB GPS caches DOES help, seriously, what are the chances of finding the vehicle? Not very high, I'm afraid. I will, however, continue to ride this lucky streak that started in Spokane for as long as it lasts! Yes, finding the thing was way cool, but Pepper, George, EGH, Weinerdog, L&R, CachinCin, and the rest, you would have found it too. You're all better than I am at this game. 20. I'm afraid I have a strange question, or more accurately, I'd like to brag about how members of OUR sport do things. While Cacherunner and I were having our bad luck after the Spokane Cache Machine with what we thought was a torn up differential, but was only rear brakes, a good friend of mine had much worse luck. He had left his commercial vehicle parked and locked here in Victoria, only to have a thief steal it late Sunday night, and subsequently place two people permanently out of work. The RCMP simply did not care that these people no longer could feed their children. It was not important enough to them. I felt terrible about this. The it occured to me: We had found every tiny little Bison tube from Spokane to Coeur D'Alene. How tough could an 18 foot long vehicle be? After work today, Team 3 set out to do what the RCMP could not do, as they don't always get their vehicle. I finally got to navigate, as I usually have to drive, so this was a sepcial treat for me. Based upon projected fuel mileage, and miles travelled by the missing vehicle since it was fueled, we narrowed our search grid to about 20 miles on a side, or 400 square miles, and began patrolling back and forth on each one road in a grid pattern, armed with my laptop computer running OZiExplorer, an eTrex Legend, and two BFL's ( Big Furry Lights) After about 3 and a half hours, I spotted the vehicle behind a tall chain link fence, after which we made quick on the spot repairs (tires, and cleaning up broken glass, as well as fueling the vehicle) and proudly drove the vehcile to the local RCMP station to inform them that their help was no longer necessary. I see this as a practical application of the skils that all the people who read these Fora have. Yup. WE FOUND IT! Now the dilemma. I left my signature rubber duck GLUED to the vehicle's dash, then went to the company office, where I asked for their logbook, and signed thus: "MarinerBC was here with TEAM 3 on Oct 1 to help out a friend. The Vehicle-cache was located after a medium sized search. Had great fun with this one, TN, LN, Thanks for the hunt." Now, how do I log it on the site? Tongue planted firmly in cheek, Mariner. 21. I'm starting to wonder if LOGGING all of these is actually tougher than FINDING them. It took two days, with my less than efficient typing skills. Thanks again Travis. You did it again. How much intelligence does it take to sneak up on a piece of tupperware?

 23. So has everyone else recovered yet? I must admit, work was not quite as fun today. I wanted to be out looking for boxes. I would have even settled for a Bison tube. How much intelligence does it take to sneak up on a piece of tupperware?
