  1. eTrex Legend $199 CDN ($149 USD)at Gpscentral.ca. This unit has 8mb internal memory for MapSource Street maps, and all sorts of cool features. That's high praise coming from a Magellan Monk like me.
  2. It does indeed show up well while on the road. The MeriPlat screen has great visibility, and DirectRoute works just great here in the Great White North. I have seen a Color screen be somewhat hard to read on the dash of a friend's car. As far as the MeriPlat's compass, thermometer, barometer go, do I need them, no. I have an altimeter and I always carry at least one compass. Do I want them? You bet, they are just great to have.
  3. You mean we have a COUNTRY NOW?? So when did THAT happen??? I just thought we declared a different jurisdiction, then switched to metric signs, so we could go 100 mph instead of just 60. Boogity Boogity boys, Now that's racin'!
  4. So the race is on: the Great White North versus the Beautiful Green South
  5. I don't get very many first finds, so I worked hard for this one. I suppose Cacherunner's surprise is somewhat moot now, though Thanks CapitalPete, some very neat stuff. I also hope you get the rights to some Groundspeak T-Shirts and clothing items. That would be very cool.
  6. Cool, I'll grab it in Portland then, if no one else does. As far as accomodation goes, it looks like the Best Western in Olympia for us, unless most of the gang is elsewhere?
  7. DirectRoute got a proper workout tonight here in Victoria, and it performed brilliantly. I never would have known that the route it chose was that close to the cache, and a place to park. This gives me much more confidence in MapSend's Canadian maps. I will now trust it much more than I did when I first got it a couple of weeks ago.
  8. My Magellan Meridian Platinum is the cat's a**, and the backup eTrex Legend is a great handheld in the bush.
  9. Au contraire! We will be coming from north of the border, but can blast down to Salem to get the bug if GrandpaRocks doesn't grab it. It's only another 100 miles, right? Nice way to spend a New Year's Day, doing reststop caches along the way. If no takers by 27th or so, we will do that for you.
  10. I wonder if loading the firmware a second time might work? My Plat is running 5.17, and it had a few hiccups after the upgrade, mostly the barometer.
  11. My Primary is a Meridian Platinum, but the backup Garmin Legend is much smaller and fits well in the hand, or in a pocket. They are also VERY reasonably priced, and 8MB of maps can be uploaded to them. I like having mapping capability even in a small unit.
  12. I found the same thing, namely only being able to create and load one region. I'm using 2 SD cards, one 128 MB, the other a 256, and the single region is limited to 64 MB. Now that is downright ornery. Is there a way to load multiple regions? I guess this means that I'm buying a card writer/reader.
  13. And yet another reason to play at Capital Iron! Very cool! Finally an Island outlet for Groundspeak. It's about time, and better late then never.
  14. The LEFT coast..I LOVE that! Well said, Halden. Greetings to the centre of the Universe from a galaxy far, far away.

    Bc Ferries

I find it quite curious that they have had since October to find a settlement, yet the union walked away from the table each time. Yes, it's time for a cooling off period. Yes, the Government has the right to legislate anybody back to work, and Yes, you have the right to vote for somebody else. I have the right to use a highway/ferry system that I helped pay for. And remember this ? Comrade Glen and his $455 million Fast Cats. Or has everyone conveniently forgotten how bad our LAST Government was? And has anybody figured out what the union even WANTS??? They sure aren't telling.
  16. Since this will be very nearly a New Year's event, perhaps there might be some reolutions, to go a long with a New Year's Cache machine. I will go first. 1) I have decided to no longer make decisions. 2) I will no longer care about the apathy problem around here. 3) I will no longer procrastinate....after tomorrow.
  17. I think I will go for the Palm Zire 21 for the outdoors, running cachemate, and a T3 sometime in the future, just because.
  18. So how about this? A smaller, less expensive unit ( Palm Zire?) that I wouldn't be too afraid to lose in the bush, and a much better one to use in the car ( Sony Clie or Tungsten T3) and for applications other than caching? Then the laptop could stay home.
  19. Oh, I've been very good indeed, just ask me. I think Palm Claus should be as generous as Garmin Claus and Magellan Claus have been in the past couple of Xmases. I still think that the expandability of the Tungsten is pretty good. The same technology (SD cards) is built into our Magellan Meridian Platinum, so we're familar with it. The learning curve is not quite so steep.
  20. That is EXACTLY what I'm thinking; it's obsolete when I get it, so why make it even more obsolete? The Tungsten E seems to meet the criteria so far.
  21. Hey George, long time no cache, buddy! So what do you think of my Palm Tungsten E leanings? What PPC model do you think I should go for?
  22. The idea at present is to use Cachemate, and then worry about other non-caching activities after that. I have noted in the past that I never really know exactly what I want to do when I first get a device, then it just sort of evolves. Caching is #1 on the list so far though.
  23. I am now lookiing at the Sony Clie , and the Palm Tungsten E. There seems to be lots of aftermarket cases out there for both.
  24. Is it possible that the SD card itself is defective? My 256 MB Sandisk card worked fine in my Platinum right out of the packaging, but I formatted it anyway, to test the function.
  25. Palm 130's seem to be reasonably priced and popular on eBay. They are pretty expensive in the regular stores, though.
