  1. Hey yes, I have no personal qualms with anyone I'd just like to say. From a handful of posts ago, "If using a perfectly good hole is against the rules then I await the say so from a reviewer and will be more than happy to move the cache. No problem, no questions asked." If it is wrong to use a hole in this method I'll even appeal to have it specified in the rules. I will contact the publisher and post here when I get a reply either way edit just to add that I will put all perspectives in the email, not just mine. I think this is actually kind of important, no? I'll post my email to the publisher here as well. In the morning that is... I have homework to do now
  2. edit: nevermind, I'm letting it go. I thought what started it was something like "convenient for you to find a rectangle hole" and I said "thanks" ah, the memories Edited to add: I think what wandat was meaning was that the perpective seems a little off. In editing the photo you placed the can behind the hole but as it is effectively moved further away without making it appear smaller, which makes it seem large enough to almost fill the hole rather than leave the gap that it really does. I have no idea how far away i was standing so I couldn't tell you how much to resize the can part. I'm just extrapolating what I thought his post meant, I've never measured caches using computer imaging software . I have no idea what calibur it is, I went to the military store and asked for "a big one" and found the size in inches from a google result for a previous post. I've only every seen 2 or 3 sizes I think, they come in more?
  3. Huh? No look, the can sits in the hole with a little more than an inch of overhanging grass, the hole has a little more than an inch of overhanging grass. When the can is in the hole the grass overlaps just enough to not see space between the grasses. It is more than enough of a gap for stuff to blow into it, get under the can as it is found and raise the top of the cache above the level of the ground so I have to go and maintain it every couple of days. See how there is more grass on the handled end of the can? It's because it doesn't sit level in the hole either. Quick edit to add: Ok sorry, change that "purpose of" to "in order to"
  4. I'm sorry, I must have missed "for the purpose of..." in the rules. So if I go out and dig a hole for the purpose of digging a hole, then come back tomorrow and put a cache in it - well, as far as the land managers (and Ground Speak) are concerned - that's quite all right, correct? After all, I dug it for the purpose of digging it. I decided later to put a cache in it. I appreciate the clarification of the intent of the posted rules! Thanks! Hey N/P. I guess if you like digging (yourself into) holes....
  5. impressive, does it take into consideration all the grass that is hanging off of the sides of the hole? Make sure you see how much is hanging off the side of the can which just barely overlaps that grass around the hole, it is actually a couple inches difference on all sides. Since you like it techinical... ammo can is roughly 12 x 6 = 72 square inches We'll say 2 inches to be conservative in space around the can in the hole which means adding 4 inches to each dimension 16x10=160 square inches. So really you say its close in size, I say the hole is more than twice the size of the can.
  6. Bold was added by me. No pointy thing was used in order to hide the cache. A pointy thing (if you call a flat shovel pointy) was used to dig a hole that had absolutely nothing to do with geocaching in the least bit. I made use of a pre-existing man-dug hole. I'm not trying to cover anything up that is wrong. If using a perfectly good hole is against the rules then I await the say so from a reviewer and will be more than happy to move the cache. No problem, no questions asked. I agree with your post Adrenalynn, end of dicussion (if it were up to me anyway ). So a shovel was not used in order to make the hole? Or are you saying the cache could have been hidden under the dirt independant of the hole being made? Prehaps by some magic-matter-displacement technology? Surely I can plant a few pounds of explosives in order to place a cache. Explosives aren't terribly pointy, generally... Man talk about being blunt, you missed the point entirely. (i made a funny) YES, A SHOVEL DUG THE HOLE, THE HOLE (DUG BY A SHOVEL) WAS NOT DUG (YES, DUG BY A SHOVEL) FOR THE PURPOSE OF HIDING THE CACHE (WHICH IS IN A HOLE, DUG BY A SHOVEL FOR A SEPARATE PURPOSE). And maybe you didn't even see the picture? There is no dirt on top of it at all, just some dead grass. Is camo not allowed now???

  8. Bold added by me- to add "any other controversial, outside the box, different, LNT, or otherwise" topic. Best to post little, read often-or avoid all together. You can get advice and info by networking with knowledgable cachers. Identify them and approach them in PM, or profile. This forum is not usually the place. Whoever that was that tried the "I have more posts than you". . . . .well that was classic..... Yea I made that post at school then raced home cuz I knew it wasn't right. I should have said: I've learned my lesson, apparently controvercial = wrong, and we all know not to post anything that we know is wrong. ooo 41 posts now! EDIT: changed phrasing and added smilie so we all know i'm just kidding
  9. wowo this got out of hand Atleast it gets my #posts up so that i can appear to be an experienced geocacher Maybe it would appease the people if I moved it 4 feet south and 10 feet west into a hole that is perfectly natural, about 6 feet deep and covered in thorny weeds? I've learned my lesson, don't share cool hides in the forums. There will be no more argumentive posts from me. If you don't like it don't hunt it, if you like it it will be there. Happy caching!
  10. Amen, I've got a 5 star i'm finishing up. Can't wait to post it. There is a prize for FTF so I will have to wait until its found to put its pic up
  11. The history/mystery of the hole. Actually right now it is disabled because my class is going out to take samples just like the prevous classes did. If you would like I would be happy to post a copy of my lab report on population dynamics of bacteria and fungal spores comparing the dry dirt to wet dirt as an ecosystem for micro organisms. We're students in a bio class, not soil sampling pros, sorry that our holes aren't perfect little cylindars. The shovels the class has are flat fronted ones, apparently they are safer in college students' hands . Hence the un-round hole. Every class goes out, looks around for those fungus circles (which can be deceptivley huge) and takes a couple cubic feet of dirt from dry dirt and wet dirt (near the creek) so that everyone in the class gets a couple cups to sift through. Then do the same in areas that have a higher chance of containing bacteria, like on a shore of a body of water that does not flow. That is where my hole came from, probably from atleast a year ago when my prof last taught this class.
  12. How bout beating him on a 5 star FTF then meeting him to collect the prize (GCVFBZ) ?
  13. I've done a bit of 'geo-mail'. I had come to find a cache that had been muggle destroyed, I took the remains with me (log book and swag). Emailed the owner and put the stuff in a baggy with a note to take it to such n such so the guy could have his stuff back and placed it in a nearby cache. Kind of like a TB without the tracking I guess.
  14. There are a couple of OYR caches in north denver and I had to do them at midnight to avoid all the muggles. anyone else ever have trouble deciding what date to put in the log on a midnight cache? I think the huge amount of muggles kind of adds to the fun. Like finding your way to the cache w/o a map, just the gps pointer (that way, this far) .
  15. Not necessarilly. Judging by the comments I'd say a pointy-object was used to collect soil samples. Then a clever cacher took advantage of an existing hole. It's all a matter of semantics. Very kewl camo! Ok, let's take that to another level. If I brought out our new cute little Bobcat and excavated your front yard about 24" deep, then dumped it in my back yard, it'd be ok, right? It's just semantics, after all. I wasn't really tearing up your yard - I was cleverly re-landscaping mine. Maybe i'm not the only one who can't connect the two? I did just use a hole that was left there, in fact there are many of the holes around there, I have to disable the cache occasionally because the school goes out to make collections and don't always 'replace their divots'. Sheesh, I was looking for a place to hide the ammo can, saw a hole that it would actually fit in, just set the thing in it and put some dead grass on top. I told the reviewer what it was and it was okay'd. Simply put I didn't use a pointy object to dig a hole for the purpose of hiding the cache and the cache is not buried. It hid well so I thought I'd share it. There is nothing wrong with it, if you don't like it thats fine, we're all entitled to our opinion. But don't go and say it should be archived, isn't allowed, breaks the rules, yada yada; because it simply isn't true.
  16. IMHO, you all seem a bit touchy for not finding the cache . A hint like "You don't need a hint" I think is a pretty good hint, it means "stop looking for a 5 star and pick up that fake rock you are standing on" without totally giving it away.
  17. Here's another answer for that problem. I did something similar for a recent cache. Spray painted with a stencil and filled in with a Sharpie Marker. JohnTee I agree, very impressive!
  18. Well I've now seen some great ways to accidentally break caches (http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=130217) so how about we share some bad cache ideas? I'm not talking about just plain crappy caches, but ones that you put some effort into creating that just didn't turn out well in the field. I'm trying to learn from others' mistakes here
  19. Ha fun stories! I'll have to keep them in mind
  20. Again, What's the dif between this and a fake drain cap for a below-suface-but-not-buried cache? Those are all over the place around here.
  21. Congrats on finding a nice rectangular hole already in the land that you could use! Thank you! It was kindly donated by the nearby school taking dirt samples. It is not a snug fit mind you. What's the dif between this and a fake drain cap for a below-suface-but-not-buried cache?
  22. Yea thats the thing. I thought I'd done it right and only saw that I had broken it when I checked the logs later and saw it was disabled. I emailed him of course apologizing and offering my help but I think he was mad I didn't let him know I broke it. I didn't know!
  23. I felt real bad but the camo was one of those super tough to spot ones and without giving it away... one of the dowles holding the camo together was aparently bolted down so you had to unscrew it to open it. You can't see the bolt or anything so I thought it was just a dowel and pulled it apart. No cracking wood or physical effort in doing it and it went back together just fine but apparently I broke the dowel connected to the bolt or something. How badly is my geo-reputation bruised by this? I've never broken one before!!
  24. Large Ammo Can, where is it? Hiding Spot Photo. Spoiler: You can actually see it when you look at it, here it is uncovered. Edited for URL typo.
  25. Ha ha ha. Sorry, I just had to laugh out loud on that one.
