  1. Well you all have certainly given me something to ponder. Pondering is over and I have sent away for that suit of full body armor complete with double layered leather gloves from Harbor freight that I have had my eye on for some time. Also noticed that Brookstone is offering a non-rattling rattlesnake detector complete with plastic coated sidewinder grabbing black widow/scorpion smashing butane flame throwing anti-nasty device - with leather thong for the wrist (three foot extension optional). All has been ordered and Brown says it is on route and will be delivered soon. I can hardly wait to show the Mrs. my new toys. She wasn’t real excited with the GPS but she did get over it. I guess that if I can’t get all this on the plane I’ll just get her to stick her hand in there. Thanks Again Wanderr We're all here because we're not all there
  2. I think that the onus of responsibility lies with the cache owner. Think before you hide a cache in an urban setting. Surely a clear plastic container is better than an old army box if you are hiding a cache in a busy setting. Maybe the downtown park isn’t the place for a regular cache. Stickers and/or writing (clear and legible ) may help to alleviate suspicion . Well concealed would prevent the casual pedestrian from ever finding a cache. Most that I have found are away from urban developed areas and more out in the woods. We look for good views and a quiet walk away from it all. Who would try to blow up a bush in the woods? We can never stop someone from being stupid but we can protect each other by considering all aspects of our own actions. Ask yourself, “Would I freak out if I found this here and didn’t know what it was?”
  3. Thanks on both counts. Guess I'll just have to stock up on Butane quote:Originally posted by DustyJacket:I favor an old Southern tradition called the "Scorched Earth Policy" when it comes to bugs and nasties........ (I'll not post the same answer to your duplicate thread in the General forum.) DustyJacket Not all those that wander are lost. But in my case...
  4. They're much easier to get along with than the tourists. quote:Originally posted by cachew nut:I would think a disgruntled bear would be kind of nasty.
  5. Hey all you southern cachers I'm curious. Up here in New Hampshire all we have to worry about is black flies, tourists, and an occasional disgruntled bear. We can go poking into anything and everything without fear of finding a nasty. I lived in Maryland for many years and remember running across all kinds of wild nastys (mostly the small type)in all sorts of great hiding places. Good idea to walk loudly and carry a big stick for poking or will full length leather gloves and a can of RAID work just as well. I’m headed south for some R&R & caching and wanted to be safe.
  6. OK. Why can't messages posted in this forum be deleted. As you can see I lost my head and posted this query to the wrong forum. Hey all you southern cachers I'm curious. 7. I'm a short timer having found 20+ with only a few that we decided were plundered but I am beginning to get a feel for what I am looking for. In most cases there is something that you are looking at that isn't quite right. Most caches have been buried/covered with what ever is handy. Leaves, sticks, rocks. If you find sticks piled together under a rock or tree, rocks sitting on top of leaves/sticks ect ie. something that won't happen naturally you have probably found the site. The virtue of Patience is essential when caching Don't forget to stop and enjoy where you are.
  8. TALK IT UP!! In just a short time I have been able to help plant the bug in three friends who now spend their weekends with family and friends getting out and seeing sights that they might never have known about. "and why the sea is boiling hot, and whether pigs have wings"
  9. It never hurts to check that the datum is set to WGS 84 in the GPS. I had been using the topo maps with the GPS and had changed the datum to NAD 27 - same as the topo maps I have. Forgot to reset GPS to WGS 84. I met the first cacher to find my stache. He was off by several hundred yards for quite sometime until he went back to the spoiler. We're all here because we're not all there.
